In multiplayer video games, many players cheer/bemoan the fact that developers often "nerf" certain things.
Then the true neckbeards move in, display their pedantic plumage, and spend 8 pages talking about what it means to actually "nerf" a thing.
So, can anyone agree on what the definition of a "nerf" is? Does it only apply to specific modules, or can it apply to whole ships or whole playstyles? Do stats or skills need to change, or does that not matter? Do any changes need to affect the specific thing that is being nerfed, or is elevating a competing thing a nerf to another?
The concrete example that got so many bacon-stripped drawers in a twist was the Gecko drone, which was given to players in an overly buffed state with the expectation that its stats would come back down to earth within a month, and whether or not the loss of Gecko DPS in a month is a nerf. . . . but any other example works too.
What is a nerf?

The argument that started this has nothing to do with being dissatisfied, but rather is a product of hard heads and semantics. I like the gecko. Doesn't change the fact that it is getting weaker in under a month. |

Anything that does not benefit me is a nerf.
Anything that benefits a playstyle I don't entertain is a nerf.
Anything that benefits me is a stealth nerf because it's not boosting me enough.
Special for eve: Anything that may hypothetically benefit a goon or was in some way connected or even proposed is a nerf in general and a nerf to high-sec specifically.

It's VERY derogatory, considering those sadsacks are the dregs of nerd culture and the reason why women tend to stay far, far away from video games.
There's a few games I'd like to get my girlfriend into, but I don't because I know she'd be subjected to some of the worst harassment the internet has to offer, just because she's a female.

NERF makes toys, like a water pistol, that are toy versions of real life things that could be dangerous. I'd rather get hit with a NERF bat than a real bat, for example (not sure why I picked that example). So nerfing something just means taking something that does something substantial and turning it into an inconsequential thing. I don't know if that's what you were asking..

I sometimes think the EVE community is filled with some of the most entitled brats in existence. I've stopped being surprised each time someone dares making demands or goes on about how they have a bunch of rights because they pay for a subscription. It's sickening to be honest.

"NERF"... it's where "you" (generic, 3rd party), the player, suddenly discover that any number of game mechanics changes, minor or not, incite you to rage on the forums that CCP is screwing "your" game, preventing you from earning your Null Sec slumlord rental fees, buying a PLEX, or something else that's "NOT FAIR" (TM).
Failure to pay attention to Dev Blogs, finish the tutorials, ADAPT to change in any meaningful way... well, SUX to be "you".
