Ok, so I have my first serious kill mission. I just got a Comorant Destroyer fitting with 125mm x6 railguns and a rocket launcher. The mission says I'm supposed to kill some pirates and blow up their outpost, and it pays 125K ISK if done swiftly. But someone warned me that I might want to bring help. Do I just go there and see if I can handle it or not or is there a way I can estimate the force I need to bring to this fight?

Well it depends on the mission. Level 1 agents have missions that are made for beginning frigates and destroyers. You can also use destroyers for level 2 missions but you have to be selective. Try it alone and see how you fare. Just insure your ship so you can have it rebuilt quickly.
That's my opinion and i'm stickin' to it |

The best gauge for how "hard" a mission is (assuming you look up the correct damage types) is the LP's. While not the best guide, its the only one I found to be semi-accurate.
L1: All can be done with a Frigage but DD makes them Easier L2: All can be done with a Frigate but a CA is better. L3: Battlecruisers or better suggested (Including AF/HAC) L4: Battleship, preferable with support.
Note the above assumes you know how to fly your ship. :)

I know I'm confused about the DD and CA, but I'm guessing Destroyer and Cruiser?

I don't believe that. Silence the Informant or Human Cattle will blow away any normal T1 frigate pretty quickly. You might be able to do it with more than 10m of fittings and high skills, but if you have 10m just buy a cruiser and normal T1 or cheap named fittings and if you have high skills you can do it in a T2 frigate easily.

Even lvl1 Worlds collide can get you dead in a frig very quick if you don't move it pretty fast at the first acceleration gate and move fast when you get to the top.
I did that in a destroyer after finding out the hard way that a frig wouldn't cut it.

I did every level 1 and level 2 mission that was offered to me in my Punisher. In fact, for many of the L2's it worked much better then my DD. I havent used my DD in a long time.
Yes, for some missions you may have to warp in and out a lot and you will have to change your configs at times for close in or distances fights. But in the end they can all be done, although some of the harder ones did take me 3 hours. ;)
FYI Yes, my skills are all designed around flying Frigates/Int/AF's. :)

Ok, I guess i'm not sure what people are having probs with "worlds collide" mission. I lost a frig. the firdt time i jumped in to the second area, but that was just my stupidity for playing that mission at 2am...tired PC+ alot of aggro = pod ride. Configed second ship + sleep= alot of dead rats and mission complete. It CAN be done in a T1 frig and i only had about 300k total SP at that time. Just engage brain before going in guns blazing.....a little tactics goes a long way.

Worlds Collide (Level 1) isn't that bad if you book it for the gate in the second pocket and you're flying a fairly fast or well tanked ship. First time I went in there they knocked me to structure before I caught the message and warped out. Second time I took the hint about the gates not being locked and just bolted for the gate ;).
I did manage some level 2 missions in a destroyer, but I found my cruiser to be a bit more reliable with my low SP.

Be aware that many noobs are using way bigger ships than needed to reduce risk and increase speed in mission-running. This is probably not as fun as having real risk of ship loss, but it does help with advancing.
If you elevevate those ^^^^^ plateaus by about one, you'll be on even ground with the PL'ing noobs.
1. Destroyers 2. Cruisers with small weapons to obliterate many frigs 3. Battleship at first, BC when ready 4. Battleship with support, solo when ready
I'm not advocating that people actually do this, I'm saying that a lot of new players are using the 'brute force' method to run missions and you may be at a disadvantage by challenging yourself to use the 'proper' ships.
