I expect this has come up before maybe a thousand times in here or so  But here is my suggestion:
It would be handy to have a few audio options and klaxxon sound options that compliment the Overview Tag System for alerting a player to the appearance of hostiles of various natures based on your standing/corp standing towards them and also an option for an Audio Alert when a spawning of npc rats appear.
Other Sci Fi Space Environment Games have it and I'm surprised it has not been capitalised by the game developers for eve (it's something every starship captain after all wants to hear when they are in or about to be in battle  ) just like in the movies he he) as it will make a very handy, user embraced feature.
I guess it is not hard to think of the range of rl situations when playing eve that this simple, (one would think to encode and set-up in a patch; however maybe somewhere thay have tried and it's beyond them software wise after the 3years this has been running) user friendly, atmosphere enhancing feature would add to your gameplay experience.
For long term play it will dramatically reduce the levels of eye strain and subsequent repercussions from that, and assist with multitasking ingame which particularly, if your a CEO or Alliance Exec etc would make your life alot less hectic when your out and about in space (will even tempt you to leave stn  ).
It doesn't take a genius to realise how better the gameplay experience would be with installing such a simple and useful feature to the game and I hope it's something worth considering. It would especially assist new players in getting used to the dangers and thrills of the game environment AND enhance the beauty of this superb game sound wise.

as long as this was only on the overview (not on local) and the effect could be turned off (like overview settings)
this could be quite cool :)
but im sure it would get annoying...especially in fleet battles.
HO.HO.HO.HO.HOS.HO.H.H.HO......<pc dies> (you get the picture :P)

I remember one of teh "tips" on CCP's tip sheet was to set the auto-scanner to alert you when threats entered the system. I've never found anyone who knows what that is referring to, but I'd be all about something that does just that.
That and the ability to see the standings you've set on local, maybe even a corp logo there. As it stands, I've had to take everyone out of my addressbook except potential threats so I can spot them in local.
