I finally got around to watching this and I have a few questions/thoughts.
First: the animation was great, not as good as Spirits Within, but that was an artistic choice, I believe, as super-realistic wouldn't have worked so well with the feel of the game. The fights were a lot of fun, and the music kicked ass. I'll probably buy the soundtrack if I can find it.
Second: The story? Was there one? It seemed to jump around a lot and assume that you knew what was going on. Basically, it was like a lot of games: give some minimal background to set up a bunch of fights. But there wasn't really much after a few minutes into it. There's some disease, and it's possibly bad. After that, who knows? Was it cured? what will the long-term results/effects be of the big fight?
It felt a lot like Akira, the first time I watched it, but with Akira they were condensing a few dozen comics into a two hour movie. It was a lot like making a movie of the Bible. It's so well known that you can cut a lot of stuff out and people will still be able to keep up. But with FF, they seemed to cut things out like it was based on something else, except this was an original continuation of the game, so we can't read the original to fill in the gaps.
Any body else feel this way? Or have any insights they can add to help me understand it better. I've got the rental till Monday, so I may rewatch it.

Play Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation or PC. Then all will make sense.
These games are quite old but ebay them and you should find a few about. I recently got a copy and finding it amazing. Just like what a million other people who play it have said.
I joined BoB and all I got was this crappy sign 族

On the DVD version, you can watch all of the important storyline dialogue from ff7 the game. It helps to refresh your memory.
The story is hard to follow, i actually had to watch the movie several times to understand it... and odd enough i can't remember most of what i understood then. "Hope is the denial of reality. |

Scrool waaaay down to 'plot analysis' under in-depth FAQs (its in alphabetical order). Read that and then watch the movie. The plot in the movie is still pretty thin, but I caught alot more little things after I read the whole plot from the game :) Its been so long since I played it.

AC, as you know, takes place like a decade after FF7, and the disease Geostigma (which is something like the DNA imprint of Jenova in the world's lifestream, like a corruption in the natural flow) and it seems kinda like a type of leprosy. what seemed to be the 'cure' was the DNA imprint of Aeris, which was one of the ancients (can't remember the term) of the planet. most of the fighting is with the three platinum-haired fellows (which are bretheren of the great Sephiroth), who are trying to retrieve a vital remnant of their 'mother', Jenova. violence ensues, along with the summoning of the master of dragons: Bahamut. explaining much more would give away too much of the plot, so i'll stop there.
oh, and this 'synopsis' is only from the japanese version. i never saw it dubbed en ingles. Designer Baby. Use in sentence "You have a very nice designer baby sir, but mine is immune to cancer." |

Advent Children was basically nothing more than a FF fanboy's wet dream. That being said...it was an FF fanboy's wet dream! - - -

Yeah, I watched the storyline part since I never got to play the original - if anyone knows how to get it to work on XP I'll love you long time . It helped, but there was still a lot of jumping around that confused me. I'll try watching it again to see if it clears things up and moves more smoothly between scenes.

you need to watch it at least like 6 to 7 times more. and play the game. i'm sure what you're running, you could sustain a psone emu and get the FF7 rom. Designer Baby. Use in sentence "You have a very nice designer baby sir, but mine is immune to cancer." |

Advent Children was specifically written for people who had played FF7, due to the short length and the content they needed to put in, aiming it for the average person who never played the game simply wasnt feasible. It was never intended to be a blockbuster (the only theatre it was shown was in japan for a few days).
But yeah, play the game through and you'll understand wtf is going on in the film :) ----- Lighten up a little bit. It's only the end of the world. |

There was a PC version of FF7, but was so horribly bug ridden that it's not worth the effort. Just buy a PSX for $40 and find a used copy or something. ----- Lighten up a little bit. It's only the end of the world. |

I dont care what you all say i am a big F.F. fan and F.F.7 was by far the best F.F. game. The graphics, story, and lenght oh not to mention the emotion behind it. I have a copy of the Japan version and when i watched it i fell in love all over agian. I dusted off my ps2 and startted playing again from the begining. Aries I LOVE YOU .
But yes you have to play the game to understand it. But to me it is a block buster Japan version and american version.
I wish they would come out with F.F.7 Again for PS3 or Make another F.F. with those chars cause i loved them all it was really different from all the rest of the F.F. Series.

C-net or download.com has a file that enables it to work with xp.. Search for filename "ffviixp.zip" (or just google it). That should get you to a file (about 9mb i think) that just replaces the one installed. Should all be plain sailing from there.

Tried and succeeded very well IMO. Although it was rather short, the moment that Seph looks up at cloud after the transformation with those "I'm evil f'ing incarnate" eyes of his was just great.
Sephiroth was the only villian in a game I dreaded fighting, because he actually kept me on edge, which is quite an accomplishment for a video game character. ----- Lighten up a little bit. It's only the end of the world. |

I like aries too but Aeris is an annoying little trollope If I was Tifa I would have clocked her long before Sephiroth did.
Personally I didn't like the voice of Sephiroth much on the english dub...subtitles ftw...Also surely 'dilly dally shilly shally ' did my head in, but otherwise it's all good.

The whole split-second transformation right when cloud was about to split Kadaj in half was pretty cool as well.
The finisher they had him use was pretty lame though. I've heard people say it's omnislash, but it's not. As far as video game movies go, it was very good, but sadly that doesn't say much in the overall picture.

First off play FF7,secondly its plot line is basically cleaning up the mess Sephiroth left from 2 years earlier which tbh is pretty understandable if you have played the game, that kinda wanton destruction as seen in FF7 and AC is going to have some kind of fall out. So the plot line is not BAD perse it was just under emphasised in the most groteque fashion cinematically I have ever seen even the American Godzilla movie had a more defined plot line.
Does this make it a bad movie? No,the cinematography was the best I had seen for a CGI movie,PIXAR and ILM would have never taken on such a production ((thankfully, knowing Lucas he would have found a way to make Cloud even more EMO)). Its just a movie that needs to accompany the game otherwise ur left feeling lost.

It would make no sense for Cloud to 'rejoin' Aeris. Aeris' boyfriend is Zack, not Cloud

facts Tifa > Arith, fact Arith is the most useless char in the game.
