So why, exactly, can I hear my missiles hitting a target?
I'd propose removing all "sounds" from the game that aren't realistic. Thus, the only thing I should hear is the horrible sounds of my ship being plastered by missiles/lasers/guns/etc.
Immersion anyone?

Hit Escape... Open Options Menu, Select Audio, Disable Audio... Problem Solved. Your in a Pod of noise canceling goo... you don't need any ingame sounds :P

It won't happen for the same reason all movies didn't do it after 2001 A Space Odessy. True reality usually isn't entertaining.

Well, in the fiction they explain that the sounds arn't real. They're actually simulated by the pod's interface with the pilot (that'd be you) because the human brain has trouble with the extended silence of space. It's the same reason camera drones are used rather than some sort of direct interface with the ship's sensors, the human brain not really being able to process the data without risking insanity.
Or at least that's the official reason. It's totally optional anyways. I turned the sound off because it gets tedious hearing the constant missile impacts while tanking Guristas. ______________________________________________

Meh.
Would be nice to have an option to turn off sound components off rather than having to do all or nothing.

the majority of pvpers turn it off to increase proformance, and so they can hear people on teamspeak/vent with ease.
i turn it off so i can hear quiet people, and so my pc doesn't reboot randomly while playing. -----------------
Where'd me pod go? |

That's my beef with teamspeak. I NEED to have some background sound, and some hand-picked music, to keep myself entertained.
While hearing who stole whose CLOUDSONG might be entertaining sometimes, I suppose my hang-up is going to be an impediment to future fleet operations.

The in-game tutorial describes it as simulated sound.
