Dunno if it's been asked before, as I didn't start playing EVE until about a month ago, but I was looking at what skills have a primary of memory as my character's highest attribute is memory. I assumed Mechanic would have memory as a primary, but was surprised to see intelligence there.
This leaves memory's primaries as the following; (Correct me if I'm wrong on either of these lists ;P)
Industry Learning Drones
while Intelligence gets;
Science Electronics Engineering Navigation Mechanic
Seems a bit unbalanced, even moreso when you consider that learning's one of the smallest skill groups in a sense; Once you've got advanced attributes at 4 and learning at 4, there's little points to ever invest in learning skills again.
The most confusing part for me, however, is that Mechanic doesn't even seem like something that would require a lot of intelligence to do well. Seems like outfitting some armor on the ship or maintaining the structure would require you to memorize blueprint plans, not to have logic and problem solving skills. Could someone enlighten me as to why Mechanic has Intelligence as a primary as opposed to Memory?

Edited by: Minarthas on 31/05/2006 09:34:50 Ah, correct myself before someone else gets to. Corporation management also has memory as a primary. However, that skill's only useful if you intend to become a CEO of a corporation. That severely limits its usefulness for most players, as opposed to skills like Mechanic, Engineering, or Electronics, most of which EVERY player will need to train at some time.

Edited by: Mike Yagon on 31/05/2006 14:26:21 Check out the amount of skills that use charisma as primary.
Anyway, as for a RP reasoning behind it, a mechanic has to solve complex mechanical problems, sure you need to remember some stuff, but you have to apply creative thinking to solve complex problems.

I seem to recall that when the game first launched, there were more skill groups that called for Memory as primary and Intelligence as secondary. Might have been Science and/or Mechanic skills. They were reversed to Int as primary and Mem as secondary several months into the game. I actually made my Memory a couple of points higher than my Intelligence based upon how the various skill groups were structured at launch. Fortunately for my career interests, I have both attributes high
I also recall that the same thing happened with Willpower and Perception...I think it was Spaceship Command skills (or was it Gunnery skills?) that were originally Willpower primary and Perception secondary and got reversed. Alot of fighter characters that were born at launch went real heavy on Willpower because of the original skill configurations. Alot of guys felt very "nerfed" (among other feelings ) when the reversals occurred.

mechanics is a field of engineering, in a future space faring society it would be even more complex engineering, requiring intimate knowledge of a ship or components function, use and maintenance, that entais alot of thinking in solving what is wrong. critical thinking and problem solving are the most important skills a person in a technical field can have.
on top of that not only is mechanic used for equipment fitting it is also required for the contruction/research/manufacture of starhips in the game, i would think that would require an itelligent mind, not just some guy swining a wrench

Doesn't matter to me one bit. My intelligence and memory are the same. ---
