Get one problem sorted and you start with another, so todays problem for all you cunning minds out there is;
Random restarts.
You are running normaly no funny noises no smoke nothing out of the ordinary, whem all of a sudden.... wham, black screen and the damn machine has reset itself no warning whatsoever. This isnt an EvE related problem it resets when i play EvE, it even resets when i play solitare FFS, it resets when i am not there with no progs running. I have run the virus checker, the spyware searcher, I even defraged both drives. and no change, once a day usually (today twice within 30mins). I have checked that it isnt over temperature, it doesnt seem to be, it did overtemp once and these restarts aren't the same. After overtemp it wont startup straight away till it cools down, these resets startup straight off. It has been doing this for about a month now, i have only changed one piece of hardware recently, the power supply, ah-ha you say, but no. It is a bigger more powerful unit than what i took out (unless too big is bad as well?) I have to admit it is a bit of an old beast now, and a mutant at that, it is a home build that has been upgraded in patches over,... umm.. 5 years
If knowing hardware will help, it is; 1.4Ghz Athlon Thunderbird 768Mb RAM (512 + 256) Radeon 256Mb 9600MX Power supply is a Hiper R480 anything else im sure i can find it out
Can anyone suggest anything else for me to check? I am out of ideas... help
p.s All i need is for it to survive the next month for my exam revision as it contains everything,

I suggest you go to My Computer/Properties and find the section with the three buttons (one is Virtual Memory). One of the buttons gives you crash options--TURN OFF AUTORESTART!
Windows XP, by default, will automatically reboot when it encounters a problem instead of giving you a blue screen telling you what is wrong. This is incredibly annoying.

Annoying is right, whats more annoying is this is Microsoft's answer to the blue screen, lets just not show it, ******* ----

That auto restart is rather annoying, But to be honest.. if there was such a nasty error in the first place.. unticking that box wont resolve it, Zaphroid, if your not particularly good with troubleshooting pcs etc.. i suggest you call your manufacturer if its under warrenty.. and have it repaired.. if its outside warrenty.. pay a PC shop to repair it.
Otherwise, take the entire thing apart, and bit by bit put it back together, while testing for each piece of equipment you put back into the machine.
I built my own pc there little over 2 years ago.. had some nightmare with the same thing.. pc just randomly rebooting.. turned out to be a damaged soundcard..
A format and fresh reinstall of windows might also be required.

99% of the time it will... at least it'll tell you what is wrong!
For example, an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL error is caused by buggy nVidia drivers and too many components on the same IRQ as the graphics card.
An nvid.disp infinite loop is also nvidia drivers, combined with an older graphics card.
Some of them make it clear that the memory is bad, for example.

The fear of that happening, is often why i just spend the extra few quid to pick up the hardware in a local shop.. All depends on how fast you want the hardware i guess.. But so far ive been very lucky with buying new items.. havnt had any dead equipment yet.

Ahhh, Maxtors. The biggest problem we have with failing PCs (usually Dells) with our residential clients are their HDDs. Dell use Maxtor.
I've been using Western Digital for the last few years (probably sold/installed at least a few dozen) and I had one give me a SMART alert the other day - the first time I've ever seen a problem with a WD disk. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

Yeah, the maxtor was cheap, and i thought as just additional storage (my OS runs off a seagate) it would work fine.
Guess i was wrong Learn from hippo's example: spend ú10 more on your drive, get a better make

Definately - especially when you're doing what I do with HDDs - the one that just failed was part of a very intensively used 250Gb mirror that's been on almost solidly for the last year and a half.
Back OT: Once the OP's posted the bluescreen message I can always run up TechNet - fantastic for this kind of thing. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

I suggest you make a CD with Memtest86 on it (google it, download it, burn it) and run it on bootup. This will test your memory.

Edited by: Zaphroid Eulthran on 01/06/2006 20:36:28 ok, i ran the memtest, it found nothing
and then within minutes of finishing the test I got a;
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
windows sayz
Error caused by unknown device driver
is this a different prob or are they linked/the same thing?
EDIT: I put it into the site provided by DS and unless im mistaken it is suggesting a comple format followed by debuild rebuild.... WHAT? is it that serious

No, thats insane.
I got IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL only a few weeks ago and I didn't have to "rebuild."
1. Go to your device manager. 2. View Resources by type. 3. Post here all items that are on the same IRQ. For example, say: "IRQ 16: Radeon x800 and USB hub."

IRQ 5, ADMtek AN983 based ethernet adapter and RADEON 9600 series
IRQ 11, SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller (this is in twice on same IRQ) and SiS 7012 Audio Driver

Open your computer, pull out your ethernet card (as I assume thats a PCI ethernet card), and put it in another slot. Problem should be solved.

Make a new thread instead of bumping old ones to be honest.
Don't people read the dates on these things! I was getting my hopes up that Hippoking had been unbanned for Christmas there and all

Sorry, but if you want people to don't bing up old posts, shouldn't you just lock them? Also, I think that you don't need to create new posts regard the same thing just because the other ones are 'out of date'. If you discuss the same thing in a single post, it will be easier to find the information that you need, so you don't need to 'mine' it. At last, if you don't know the answer for the question, just give the place for someone who knows instead of write about something that is not in the scope of the post. This will make the forum lots better to be read.
Thank you.

Just change the IRQ of the Network card, it should be on IRQ 7.
You Do This At Your Own Risk. --------------------------------------
1)Right Click My Computer, Select Manage. 2)Opens Management Console. 3)Select Device Manager. 4)Click on the + next to Computer (Top Icon under computer name) 5)Reveals "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC" 6)Right click that, select properties. 7)Go into "Driver" tab 8)Click "Update Driver" 9)NEXT 10)Display a list of known drivers for the device 11)NEXT 12)Click "Show all hardware of this device class" 13)Under (Standard Computers), select "Standard PC" 14)NEXT, NEXT, etc...
15)Reboot and pray.
Hopefully all will be well when you reboot. A number of things will be different. One will be that some advanced power management things DO NOT WORK. Particularly, its likely that if you select "shutdown" from the start menu, it will just shut the OS down, and you will be left with the old message "its now safe to turn your computer off" instead of the actual power going off, i.e. you will loose the ability to power down using software and will have to press the power off button on your case. You may also get IRQ conflicts because you will have lost advanced IRQ management and will instead have to rely on the BIOS trying to do the best it can to make everything work. Try to set "Plug and Play OS installed" to NO in your BIOS if you have such a setting. You might also want to run a "Reset ESCD Data" as well first time round.
Good luck. You might need it.
