I'm going to be getting more memory soon and I have a question.
I currently have a 256 mb memory stick in my computer. Sucks I know. I'm going to buy a 512 mb memory stick asap. Can I combine the two so I have 768 mb? Or is that not good to do?
Thanks for your help. :) Minnie FTW!!!1 |

Usually, yes.
If your PC was bought (rather than self-built) it's worth giving Crucial a look as they will tell you what memory your motherboard supports and what multiples of which sticks can be added.
(Crucial UK)
Their prices are also pretty decent as well. Enjoy! ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

Sorry to hijack the thread but I also got a question about memory:
I recently bought 4*1Go of Corsair XMS DDR PC3200 and tried to install it. My comp seems to not be able to deal with it and I got total freeze each 20-30mins with any game (ie: eve, AAO, random single player game), when it's idleing, it can run for some hours.
I've checked each ram mod separately, not a single error (10h straight of MemTest for each ram module). I'm at this time only using 2Go.
I got an MSI K8N Neo2 mother board with last bios (with a 64 +3500 plugged on it), which, according to MSI, can handle 4Go of ram (PC3200 and up).
Os version: XP pro SP2.
Another mate, with a different hardware but same OS version, have the same issue: comp can't handle 4Go.
So, is it XP which can't manage 4Go or anybody got another lead?

XP32 cant handle more than 3GB ram properly. Not to mention that 4 stick only run @ 2T command rate which decreases your memory bandwidth by about 20%.
Either use 2x1 or install XP64, pretty much. ----------------

There's a really interesting thing about the memory support on that motherboard on the MSI site. Usually, fully loading a desktop motherboard with RAM causes problems. Are you using double sided RAM? ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

keepiru: thanks mate Well, is there any way to grab/buy/test a legal copy of XP 64? I failed to see it in any computer store I've been (in France)?
Raven Aure: thanks for the link, they put exactly the same tables in the MB "help book" . I think they're double sided (if it means I got chips on both sides of the ram mod) and they dont manage ECC. I followed the prereqs when installing them; they're exactly the same.
With 4Go it was the 3rd combination in the first table, and the last in the 2nd one. (Noticed the change in mem freq on start up in the bios info).
To both of you: thx for the help and the quick answer mates.

The net would be your best bet mate, XP64 isnt really widely sold in shops. Any major e-retailer should stock it.
As for myself, its too hard to OC 4GB to the point where you get more bandwidht @ 2T then you did @ 1T, so im sticking to 2x1. ----------------

didn't read all the posts but go to egghead.com, bought 2GB DDR RAM for about $110.

They have to have matching numbers
IE::
Both sticks need to be DDR 400... or DDR 333... or DDR ***. And, they also much have matching latencies. Basically, if you don't know what to look for for that... just plug them both in. If the computer runs... then Grats!... if not... then just take out the 256 stick. --- --- --- ---

Originally by: MSI ò This mainboard DO NOT support the memory module installed with more than 18 pieces of IC (integrated circuit).
I wonder if that's the problem? ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron
