Personally, I think if you're using the NPC rats to kill somebody (voluntary or involuntary) then you don't really deserve the kill mail. You didn't do it yourself, AND if you were with corp mates... whoever laid the final blow would get the kill mail anyways... not you. Nobody complains about that though because their name goes on a kill board anyways. I say quit whining. Go on with your day.

i actually got popped once and the rats got the killmail.
The pirate who got me was being a douche though, so in tried and true pirate tradition i attempted to ransom my killmail to him

Signed, it's so annoying. And every time it's happened to me i've convo'd the guy and asked very politely if i could get a copy of the killmail and he/she's just hurled a load abuse at me... Some people

Seriously, what else would a person be doing in a belt other than NPCing? Mining? That's not exactly a fair fight either, atleast the NPC'ers can put up more of a fight. Hell, they may even win.
...And besides, why would a pirate want a fair fight anyway? The idea is to kill your target, whatever means possible.
Next time your hunting in a belt, and find someone npcing, do the honourable thing and let them finish there fight. I'm sure they'll hang around to get killed by the pirate that's just been watching them for five minutes.
