I don't know why but when I think of a spaceship in my head it's not all sleek and sexy like some nubian from Starwars, it's big and blocky, old and rusty, A REAL ship not these namby-pamby new things that get flown. Surely there are others out there who adore the style of an old ship? I'd rather go into combat in a Hoarder then a thorax. So come on, name (and shame) yourselves here, throw off your shiny chrome wing-flange tips or whatever those boy-racer types zoom around in and say you love the rust too ^^

I cant fly it, but i do like the look of the phoon, guess I am one of the few. A few of the minmatar ships do look ok, rifter and such, but yup some of them do just look like a pile of junk. _______

I have always thought of future human ships as being similar in design to the Terran ships from Babylon 5 (or for that matter any similar show or game). Big, Bulky, with rotating sections for gravity. It just seems to fit.

I must have a very different taste... I think they look awesome. Gallente ships all look like electric shavers, yet everybody seems to like how they look. Its a strange world. For me.

I like the phoon very much because of its rugged long lasting raw power output look. Many of the older Minmatar ships have a slightly worn look - until you move them out of Minmatar space into those systems with much better illumination. I like the way the Thrasher and Cyclone are built, but I don't really like their 'fresh from the assembly line' look. They really need a little worn look: some broken solar panels, micrometeor dents in the hull, discolored armor plates, scorched combat scars, stuff like that.
Another ship that I really like is the Arbitrator. It has that 70ies retro feeling. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

The Typhoon looks quite nice. Rifter looks awesome. Cyclone's cool. Dunno. It seems that in general Gallente is the most pleasing overall (i.e. not many horrible-looking ships), but individually others have some nicer ships. And Minmatar Rust > Amarr Yellow (who the hell flies yellow spaceships anyway?) & Caldari Ugliness any day

Everyone picks on Gallente. I've heard someone say Gallente ships all look like shoes except for the Tristan.
But I agree with the OP, ships should be bulky and not aerodynamic.

I prefer the look of the sabre over the look of the thrasher, although the sabre looks even more high-tech (which also makes sense). I like the blue light/color on some of the minni tech2 ships, but don't want to see it on every ship. Btw. Has the jaguar been changed in the last months ? Last time I looked at it it seemed different. Maybe it was just the light in the station...

rusty?
battered, abraded, scorched, pitted, torn, but NEVER rusty!
rust is what? its an oxidized compound of the metal surface, and what is there a distinct lack of in space?
but ships dont have to be bulky - speaking as a physicist, they should all be symmetrical along the direction of thrust so as to make maneuvering easy, but its a space game in which we regularly go 2000+ times faster than light. give it a bi of leeway =)

personally I LIKE the sleek "finished" look more than a possibly more pseudo-realistic blocky appearance.
I would much rather fight in something like the Andromeda than a blocky grey square block of metal.

Of course, there is a very plentiful supply of oxygen within the ship itself (at least if you want your crew to stand any chance of completing their tour of duty). Mind you, that does mean the ship would be rusting from the inside out, so if your camera drone can see it, it's probably time to invest in some structural repairs!
Of course, the other words you use all bring in the prospect of impacts on your ships hull of various random space debris. This debris may well include oxidising agents which will sit on your hull (when was the last time you saw a ship-wash?) and gently rust it away. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

if we ever become space faring IRL(and i think we will), i think that ships will look different depending on owner. some rich guy might have a shiny and clean ship, while a massive "space truck" would be like real semis and dirty and showing of its travels over great distance.

fernite carbide A revolutionary ceramic carbide compound, much favored by the Matari both for its earthy quality and its extremely wide range of technological uses.

It all depends imho. Minmatar's oddball designs mostly need to look rusty or dirty (I don't think the matarians really care), while the proud Amarr designs need to be shiny (it's kinda status-symbol for the empire). Caldari should be clean, but not shiny (military background) and Gallente can be both (most people would pollish their Enyos, but I can also imagine rusty ones).

Minmatar ships are definitely the most realistic looking of them all. They're how our first deep space ships will look, i.e. lots of scaffolding-looking parts connecting inhabitable areas and equipment, plus solar panels for energy. Some of them aren't very realistically designed, since we'll use symmetric ships since they're easier to fly, or at least ones with a central center of gravity, but otherwise they're pretty good.

Yeah I love the stiletto/saber look. Looks very high tech like it's gonna kick your ass with ewar.
Jaguar looks awesome with it's camo, it's really hard to see it in some systems though.
I love the way matari ships look, a few do look like crap though... burst, belicose, scythe, hoarder...

Some Minmatar ships (Cyclone, Typhoon maybe?) might look somewhat feasible considering realistic implementation, but many would simply be too damn fragile. A ship needs to be rather solid of construction in space, obviously. A Rifter for example, while it looks cool, seems like it could snap apart from certain parts.

Definently. I would prefer amarr though, since a borg cube with lasers is cooler than one with railguns or missiles.
