CCP, there are off buttons for ship explosions, missile effects, turret effects, etc. "Immersion" does not seem to be harmed by those. So, please give us a persisting-áoff button for the jump gate and autoscan visuals. |

If it hasn't already been said then "yes upgrade to 8.1" but do make sure you have done a disk check first.
Now if you are still using XP and saying "it works fine" you have a nightmare waiting to happen.

Anyway:
Using windows 8.1 here. Occasional graphics problems (driver halts), but I'm pretty sure that's down to the overclocked (from factory) graphics card, not liking Firefox.
There's supposed to be an update coming out some time in the near future which returns the start menu (with a few live tile spaces on it. actually looks neat) which should take care of most people's problems with 8. From a behind the scenes perspective, it's the better and more secure OS.
(remember to update to 8.1 update 1. As if you don't, you won't get any more updates)

On the most part, Windows 8.1 runs well. I do believe in giving the consumer options and feel MS should have made Metro UI optional, especially for those of us who do not have or use a touch screen. Like most, I was extremely skeptical about Win8; but the skepticism waned and I don't have any desire going back to any previous version of Windows. Although, if MS does what I've heard they might do (sub-based OS), I'll drop all support for MS and build a Linux box or Hackintosh.
Since coming back to EvE, I have had one issue which requires a complete reboot to fix. I highly doubt this has anything to do with Eve, but if I try to listen to Pandora and play Eve at the same time, I'll lose sound in Eve. Afterwards, I cannot get any of the open windows to respond and the mouse cursor does nothing but take focus away from the desktop. I assume it is stuck in Eve even though I can see it on the desktop. Like I said, this is more than likely an issue of Windows default sound driver I am having to use because ASUS won't provide one for my GENE III MOBO. |

Yeay, I voted for you.
I don't mind windows 8, I'd already done the 8.1 update which adds a lot more ease of use to the os if you are used to earlier versions of Windows.
Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |

I have windows 7 x64 which is running EvE quite happily.
As for windows 8 I don't like it at all to complex to find things.
I use windows 8 at work but not on my home PC.
If or when Windows 9 comes out and it has the same interface as windows 7 then I will upgrade it to Windows 9.
As we all know Microsoft comes out with one good operating system and one bad operating system.
I remembered when it was Dos, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 for workgroups, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millenium,Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 8.2 soon to be released, Windows 9 whenever that is going to be released.
There you all go a little history on the Windows operating Systems over the years.

Windows 8 has a lot of changes under the hood that makes it faster and more stable (one reason why this was done was to provide a version of Windows that would be as responsive as a tablet OS). Win 7 is great and all, but Win 8 x64 can do everything the previous operating system can.. all of the legacy support is built in.
What Windows 8 also did in the industry is drive computer OEMs to provide better trackpads and (usable) touchscreens on laptops. The trackpad on my Thinkpad can do multi-finger gestures like my MacBook (it's almost as decent). It actually makes me not miss my MacBook at all..
I also like the new Start screen. It's like the old Start Menu, but everything is much bigger.. and like in Mac OS you can just start typing a couple of letters and it will find the program you need. You can also try Windows Key + X to bring up a helpful menu of things that were previously on the right-hand side of the Start Menu.

Regardless, the OS is a marketing disaster for MS and whilst you can actually force it to work as a windowing OS rather than a tablet one if you try hard enough you simply should not have to.
Win8 as " the OS that best provides computer nerds with a chance to show off by sneering at people that do not like it" is not a particularly viable marketing model :D
That said ... it actually runs EVE fine most of the time. |
