... seriously, what's the fuss about? You can't wander too deep in any other MMO's forum, especially those vanilla fantasy games, without hearing "I'm leaving when OMG VANGUARD comes out."
I have been trying to gather what the big deal is with this game, collecting tidbits from the fanatics. Here's what I found so far.
-It is called Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. (they love to use the full title) -It has... NEW GRAPHICS OMG -There is a... CRAFTING SYSTEM OMG -There are... ELVES OMG (like we need more)
Someone help me out here. What is the deal with this superhyped hysteria machine?

It's Brad McQuaid's, is why.
All that hype has been turned on its head though, when it was recently announced that SOE will have its grubby mitts all over it. That pretty much blindsided everyone.
Burn, Brad... burn. _______

I clicked on this expecting it to be all uberhyping fanboyism, and was about to post pretty much exactly what you put in the OP.

Edited by: Kurren on 06/06/2006 20:46:42 I was actually really excited about this game for the longest time. So excited that I actually flew out to San Diego for a FanGuard. I forum *****d and chit chatted, made friends and such. Everybody was so excited that the people who made the original EverQuest would be coming out with another MMO. HOLY ****!! Brad is making a new MMO?! This is gonna be good!
/excited on
Then... they decided to team up with the uncle that molested them when they were younger. That would be SOE. So... I've long since forgotten about that game. I do keep in contact with the folks I met in San Diego though. Coll bunch of people. The Devs though... dumb as shattered bricks for teaming up with SOE... again.
/excited off
edit - oh, and for the most part, the game was "vanilla." It looked good. It had a few cool looking armor graphics, but for the most part, the look was drab and "plain ol'." The difference between this game and every other game was that Brad McQuaid(sp?) was in charge of it. That's what made people so excited about it. His "vision" or some non-sense. This was going to be the game that EverQuest should've turned into. It had hardcore gamer's inner child going "WEEEEE!!!" The children that remembered to good ol' days before Sony had their way with Varant. But... back to square one, I suppose. --- --- --- ---

Just to indulge an old girl that was playing BBS MUDS all the way into the Everquest days, could someone explain to me what the "grand original vision" of Everquest was?
From what I could tell, its selling point was that it was a medieval fantasy RPG (yes, there was a time when those were rare!), that it was in 3D, and that it was... massively multiplayer!
Apart from that, I am unaware of the grand vision the Vanguard zealots were pining for.

Since I don't seem to be getting much out about what's good about Vanguard, to the beta testers and those in the know, what sucks about it?

im REALLY sick of all this MMO craze now, theyre all the frigging same, EVE is the only one that currently warrants playing because its different, and it does it extremely well.
in my own opinion, if you want a good MMO, develop it for the Nintendo Wii, get that movement-sensitive controller that, at E3, demonstrated players being able to play tennis swinging the controller about like the raquet, and let people use it to swing swords about at each other.
THAT would be an MMO worth playing. plus it would make all the fat mmo nuts get some excercise. and id like to see people macro in that game. everybody wins.

If you've ever tried to figure out a quest before any hints or spoilers were given then that was pretty much where the "magic" was. I'm not trying to defend any game, but EverQuest was a drug to a lot of us who are now playing Eve. Lots of us were just excited to see that McQuaid was getting back into it and wanted to support the guy. My position was I needed a good game to play when I needed a couple days break from Eve. I enjoyed EverQuest when Brad has his hands in the cookie jar, so I figured I might enjoy VanGuard. The problems with the game, as I found out just talking to the Devs in San Diego... is that they're trying to take WoW's customers away. What that usually means is you need a game that's easy, fast paced, and has more character slots for re-rolling. Character creation was nice, but it was simply EQ2's enhanced. Like I said though, lots of us just wanted to support McQuaid... until he went right back to SOE. Anything with that stupid blue square on the box does not get played by me. It's lucky if I don't just drop it on the floor and actually put it back on the shelf.
The "grand vision" though, was just something Bradley boy start yapping about when Microsoft started pushing for a release. He wanted more time, but Microsoft (who helps CCP out, keep that in mind) wanted to make sure things went successfully. CCP and Sigil could've been working "together," but McQuaid apparently didn't want to be rushed and didn't want to change things Gates thought should be changed. So, he whined about his "vision" and went back to SOE. --- --- --- ---

one of the reasons i wanted to play a space game instead of almost everything else is the simple fact
i did not want to be a Elf walking around with a big stick |

I had an eye on this game until I saw SOE was going to handle the servers and the billing. SoE will never get anymore of my money.

My view on it is that one thing Everquest had that is now lacking in modern MMOs (Not MMORPG.. there is no RP is any of these games) was a sence of larger than life.
I recall playing Everquest during that breif period I got into it before Luclin came out.. steping outside your front door was a big thing! You took a significant risk just leaving the aura of the torchlight near the guards, not just in getting killed but in getting lost as your sence of direction was a dubious, at best, Sence Heading skill. The only flaw was that you could just run in one direction till you hit a zone wall and follow that till you can upon a trail. (Of course, not all zone lines had trails up to them or led anywhere safe). Also, barring the help of a high level druid or wizard, getting from one end of the world to another was not an easy task... nor one that could be done in short order. You had to be careful of who liked you and who didn't for if you attracted the wrong attention you'd be back where you started and a whole lot nakeder. You had to live with the fact that there were some places you simply could not go no matter how much you wanted to... the only way to get there was to work hard to become powerful enough to be worthy of the place. Granted this led to much frustration and limited interest for the instant-gratification crowd, but it was imersive, it was hard, and it was fun.
Nothing against EvE, but without player pirates there is none of the immersiveness that original EvE had, and even then it's a completely different sort of danger.
None of the current MMOs, including present-day Everquest, make the world seem 'big' or 'dangerous'.. that, many beleive, is what makes Brad so great is that he made Everquest what it was, so perhaps Vangard will have that spirit of 'Gosh, I actually accomplished something by going past that rock today!'
Personally, I feel Vangard is waaaaay overhyped and will fall in line with the rest of the EQ-esque MMOs out there with it's standard set of gameplay and small set of unique characteristics (I can chop down a tree and make a chair with it! Woo hoo!).

You want the real scoop? I've been in since beta 2, ie December 05.
The server never saw more than a 100 people on it despite 1000s of invitations.
The graphics engine was so nuts. If youre not running 2-4gb of RAM and at least 512 of video its gonna suck.
40-50 exp is so insane, literally taking weeks to gain 1 level.
Last but not least, SOE now owns rights to the game. So intrinsically it will suck now.
It just wasn't fun. Warhammer Online better not suck, or someone is getting kicked in the junk.
