I'm rather curious.. did the old mega-alliances that controlled five to seven regions have serfs? Or is this something new that Band of Brothers has brought to the game in responce to the modern game mechanics? Looking at the map, it doesn't seem like any other alliance has the sort of buffer serfdoms that Band of Brothers has.

"Serfs" are not free to leave their farms. They are almost slaves (or are slaves depending on how you define it).
Eve has no serfs. It does, however, have renters.

Have you looked at the north? The whole area is one giant petting zoo for D2. LV has plenty of pets incluing Ghost and KOS.

On a related note.....
In addition to renters, Eve also has Feudalism. The relation ship between some corps could better compared to the relation between a King and Baron, than between a landlord and a renter. Both types of relationships exist in Eve (among other types)

"Get back to you turnips, peasant!"

You could have a point.. perhaps sharecroppers would be a more accurate term.
And in response to another poster, the key difference is that Knights of the Southern Cross, Ghosts of whatever, and the various northern entities other than D2, are sovereign. They live in areas which they claim to own. While some might be termed client-states given their relationship to nearby powerhouse Alliances, other alliances do not hold claim to the territory they inhabit. Never mind that to my knowledge, D2 is on poor terms with TCF, ERA, and VOID, and the mass of south-eastern alliances are aligned primarily in opposition to Red Alliance.

There are the powerhouses, like, say, BoB, D2, the LV -V- chimp, ASCN. Those alliances have territories they can defend on their own, and that they conquered on their own.
Then you have lesser alliances put in charge of regions by those larger alliances, those alliances can deal with small pirate infestation and deal with limited gank squad by themselves, but did not conquer their space, nor would they be able to survive very long left to themselves, but they are indeed sovereign in their space. Those would be KOS /Ghost / GUARD.
Finaly you have the mining slaves, those "sponsored by" corporations, often they rent the right to use a "secured" 0.0 space, most of them are completely unable to put any kind of resistance even against small gank squads. Great way to learn about 0.0 for unexperienced players, but don't waste too much of your time in this position.

The reason is that you donpt hear their names tossed around the forums. Look up how many alliances there are. Now look how many actually hold space or stations. Do you follow me? The VAST majority arent empire dwelling alliances. They are alliances that live in land controlled by others.
Do a little research next time. Not too mention VOID/ERA dont even live up north now...

you mean that PA/NBSI didnt use F-E as a buffer zone? D2 arent using MM and guard in the exact same position? XF used to have certain corps in certain areas, and considered their northernly regions buffer zones to their northernly neighbours.. it's generally good planning..

That's exactly what I'm asking.
Though at least in my opinion, alliances that have other sovereign alliances as allies is not anywhere near the same as alliances holding territory and having other alliances defend it for them without any claim or rights to it.
Sovereign alliances are capable of treating with each other as equals, even when one is obviously more powerful militarily. When one alliances is living in another's territory, there's no question of who is the master.

I'm not sure what point your trying to make, every treaty made is agreed by both parties involved or they dont work.. while it's not uncommon to shout alot on the forums "OMG YOUR XYZ's slaves!!" mostly the relationships are good for both parties in some way, or they wouldnt exist, would they..
Claims and rights have little to do with any of this though..

I don't know about serfs but you do have vassal states, for example the alliances Xelas and FIX are vassal states of BoB. This isn't a flame, look at the definition above.

how do you have "renters" in Eve?
To people literally pay an alliance / corp ISK to live in their space?
Do they get any benefits from this rent, such as reduced station fees, protection etc?
Only ever lived in Empire, or as part of HF - so not experienced this. --

Nope no serfs.
There are wannabe Alliances/Corps that think they have what it takes to maintain a foot hold in 0.0 The key is not who you + standing too its who is at the end of the gun that is still around next month.
PVP really. |

They pay the fees to refine (tax's in Conq. Stations)...and some alliance "serfs" or pets.... do pay a tax....or pass fee....

Another example of this is when goonfleet was first getting started and they would pay BOS to live in syndicate and help them get started out there, as you can see that turned out to be a great move by them. Also anyone remember the days of "Sponsored by ATUK"?
So yes renting has been going on for awhile by most major alliances and to different levels. At one extreme was the FA hunting pass and on the other was the the Deklien residents/ATUK sponsored groups --------------- RIP - Smoske, My Friend

Look at it this way. Access to 0.0 space can earn a dedicated small-med sized corp many billions a month.
If the alliance has relatively empty, non critical space, renting it out for less than the corps projected earnings will make the alliance money just by owning the space. -

Yay for applying wholly incorrect socio-economic analogies to a video game.
Or worse, perhaps you're right, and what people really want with their leisure time is to be enslaved and allowed to mine digital minerals all day long.
What a horrible thought.

If I wanted to mine 0.0 this is what I'd do all the way. Pay a fee or tax and get to mine all day long without the normal alliance drama of being guilted for not firing a gun.
