Hunters Presence

During my time as a pirate, I only ever had two targets escape from me using stabs... out of around twenty, that isn't bad. So that's about 10% of ratters and miners in the low security region where I worked.
Whereas during my time with the ISS, I've had around ten pirates attack us where I deduced if they had stabs or not and there's only one of those that didn't use stabs. That's 90%.
Now, I wholeheartedly agree with using stabs as a pirate, I used to when my Prophecy was still 'precious', I'm not suggesting it's wrong. I just feel these findings are quite contrary to public belief.
Has anyone else noticed this, or do you find the opposite?
This is a not a debate on the pros/cons of stabs, just an interesting aside about their statistical usage. For all the comments about stabs being for newbs, it appears to me to be the t2 death dealing 0.0 l33t HAC squads that fit stabs. -----

i think that really its about 50 50. just like people who dishonor duels.
people just like to throw labels on people and say they are horrible people or carebears
what people don't understand is that there is no black and white, there are honorable pirates, and then there are dishonorable pirates.
there are some people that use all their lowslots for WCS, and there are some that don't use any.

Evolution.
If you conform to a standard of warfare, you are potentially vulnerable to others that disregard your standard.

You can't generalize any group in any game or in society itself for that matter.

Of course you can.
That is a mere matter of statistics.
And since OP asked for observations - that is precisely what he is trying to accomplish.

87% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Edited by: magnet0 on 08/06/2006 08:43:13 Never thought about that really but now you mention it, it actually does make sense. When I mine in 0.0 with my main char I almost never have stabs since I need slots for expanders and what have you, and when I pirate with this char I always have a couple on unless I'm out with my mates. But I think it's mostly a matter of learning the lesson... the unstabbed miners you've killed so far might not have experienced a belt ganking before. |

Totally agree. Stabs help pirates alot.
Two scramblers - you can hold most victims.
Two stabs - you can usually get away.
It sounds like a contradiction but most of your targets as a pirate (miners, ratters, haulers) dont have or cant afford to give up 4 slots to WCS.

I personally relate this philosophy to stabs:
'If you can't beat them, use them'

I don't use stabs in combat, I use them only for travel (as they were originally supposed to be used). I don't fly ships I can't afford to lose, and even though it means I don't have the uber-leet HAC or the uber-leet omgwtflavorofthemonth ship, it keeps my credit balance in healthy standings.
*shrug* 1 stab on a ship I can deal with, the only thing that annoys me to no end are 2 month old characters flying battleships and 7 stabs.

I don't use and / or like stabs. They take away precious low slots I rather use to tank.
Question to the pirates here:
Would 80% resists and two large reppers (tech 2) on a Megathron be enough to get a fair 1 vs. 1 with, say, tiller or Verone? I can run them indefinitely.

Edited by: Lojik on 08/06/2006 11:10:08 Personally i never fly anything i cannot afford to loose so i very rarely use stabs and if i do its for mining or traveling through space where i have no instas and even then i usually dont use them.

Stabs are only useful if the enemy is already close and has a lock on you. In belts warping out quickly works better and when the gates are camped they can't save you from being wtfpwnz0r3d by teh ebil pies.
I don't consider them a worthy anti - piracy - protection, they are more a pvp - mod for people who are not sure if they can win.

Anyone that had the guts to plunge into the monster stab thread in this forum secion will have read many posts explaining why it is beneficial for most pirates to stab up (especially when flying very expensive ships).
It's simply a matter of risk vs reward, stabs enable you to escape encounters you are losing and warp in and out in skirmishes or fleet engagements. Even if you have to acrifice some damage or tank, the tactical advantage that stabbing up gives is big enough that ftting at least two makes perfect sense for most pirates. -----

Low slots are better used for other things. Cap power relays, armour tanks, etc, etc.
I don't even use stabs for travel. I use nano's and MWDs.
Oh, and the Snigg stabbed Domi, prolly a travel fit. But then, mine is not to reason why the bosses do things the way they do. --

I was solo hunting with -2 on my ship. And had 10 people in a row run off scrambled.
