When ratting I sometimes see loot containers from people who are no longer in the system.
Is it acceptable to get what is in them or not?
I ask because I found a belt with about 10 jetcans right now but the system is empty for about 30 or 40 minutes now. Quite some stuff in there.
So, would you think bad of me if I go and take what others left lying around?

If the owner of the can belongs to a player corp, ANYBODY in his player corp can attack you w/o concord intervening for 15 minutes after you loot it. If he or she is in a NPC (starter) corp, only THEY can attack you for 15 mins.
It's a risk, and if it's an empty system, a small risk.. but it exists. /shrug
Plus, if they left them there... they probably don't want it. heh

Thanks.
I'll take the stuff and send a mail to the two pilots (same corp both) explaining why I took it and offering compensation.

Really, if they left it there, they don't want it... :) Especially if the system's been empty for 30-40 mins. That'd be an interesting mail to get though, somebody explaining why they looted my cans I left 3 hours ago... ;)

If they had other corp members in the system I may come back in a few minutes to see if they started collecting them back.
If you notice some of them timing out and dissapearing, I would takethose suckers for sure.
In fact I found 4 or 5 next to a gate, and I was on my alt - I could have been vaporized in a heartbeat. So I took them! Felt good. Sneaky :)
I'd give them maybe five to ten minutes to warp back out to collect, but nothing takes more than 10 minutes to grab an empty ship and head back out - if he wanted them back he'd have taken them.

Edited by: Yarek Balear on 08/06/2006 13:24:32 Different people will have different opinions. If you're in 0.0 they can pop you anyway, so create a safe spot - take the good stuff from the cans, jump to safe, wait for 15 minutes and then go about your merry business.
Edit: If you're in empire, don't bother - they may be sitting cloaked and waiting for you to aggress.

I once blew someone to hell for looting my cans: i was NPCing in 0.1 in my ferox (including scrambler for more interesting PvE), and a thorax warped in 5k from me, flashing red.
He ended up in a pod before he knew what was happening. Turns out he was flashing red due to looting cans in the belts behind me before finally catching up.

Make a safespot. Take the loot, if the timer is not up and pilots jump into system, o to safespot.
Basic rule of things is: if one left the can there and even moved out of the area, than that pilot does not need it, resultin in a free loot.

I generally rename a can or two to "Be Right Back".
Though some people can be just rude ...
Running a Blockade Mission, I once had someone wander up close in a Thorax - looked to be an old enough pilot for a Tech 2 PVP Thorax to me. So I tell him to back off. He then asks if I want the loot, and I say yes. He still hasn't backed off. Tells me he "only needs a couple of medium hybrid turrets". I lock and orbit him at optimal whilst he saunters closer to my cans.
At this point I'm wondering if it were an eBayed pilot or similar, and thought his cruiser could wtfbbq my Frigate, but after getting up close and personal he realises it's an Assault Ship.
I don't know the numbers, but I reckon the Thorax should've been more than a fair match against my assault ship, unless he really didn't have guns (doh)
After swallowing his pride, he went on his way quietly.
Back on topic, since can flagging was implemented, it's always a risky business as you leave yourself open to attack. Fortunately, most people don't run with PVP setups when hunting belt rats.

Or you can be like me and have Pirate Jawa Syndrome - if it's left there, take it. If it's someone else's, oh well, they weren't watching it, it's mine now. Live off what you can get.
Unless of course you're looking to be safe from people avenging the loss of their Microwave S crystals. Byt judging from the "is it acceptable" I assume you're looking more after your rep than your pod.

Hmmm...wouldn't expect such a carebear gesture from the Queen of Hades.
But this does bring up an important point about space litter. I've seen roid fields with 3X more cans than asteroids! It's getting ridiculous! I am sure some of these cans belong to players who are not even playing EVE anymore. There should be a time limit on cargo cans left in space as far as ownership.

I'm not as all the other Amarr.
My Amarr parents abandoned me for being a pre - marital child but I was found by a loving Minmatar couple who adopted me and gave me all the love a couple of parents can give.

Doing blockade missions near big traffic routes are annoying. A while back I had someone in a Condor pre-align to a station, loot one can, and bugger out. He was gloating on local about it, too. 'lololol :)))))))))))'.
And further back when I was taking on two Gurista battleships in my Scorpion, I had some moronic newbie in a Merlin who opened fire on me, believing it to be an easy kill since there were two Guristas and one of me. He promptly got Concordokken'd.
But back to the subject of cans, whenever I don't want anyone taking me loot, I re-name my cans 'Do not touch'. That way if they do become flagged, I can crush newbie thieves without worrying about being called a high sec pirate or greifer. After all, they were giving a fair warning. If they're not re-named as such, and no one is about, it's fair game. ___________________________________

Why in the -world- can there not be a cleanup of secure cans that have nothing in them or haven't been modified in, say, the last 6 months?
If I individually dropped all of those cans I'd be keelhauled (and that sucks in space) for violating the TOS - wouldn't this help speed up some of the most bogged down systems (Jita, Sob, Ourrs)?
argh!

Ironfleet Towing And Salvage routinely vacuums cans that have been abandoned (our policy: it's abandoned if the owner isn't visible on the local grid). We even run salvage ops (using hauler and swarm of young broke corp members in fast condors) at stargates where the mission runners have left hundreds and hundreds of cans.
Every now and then we run afoul of of an ex-owner of a can, but it's astonishingly rare. Most folks who don't loot their cans leave and they don't come back. It takes astonishingly bad luck to meet them again, but it does happen.
You would not believe the loot people leave behind sometimes.
In the history of the corp, I think we've only met one ex-owner who left loot because his hold was full and came back during the salvage op genuinely aggrieved that we were picking up his cans. His battleship locked one of our frigates from 80km out, our man left quickly before missiles arrived and apologized via Evemail for the misunderstanding.

Just take it. Its only a 15 min aggro timer and if you see a member of their corp warp into local, just safespot till the timer runs out.
They'll never know.
Besides, leaving stuff lying about if they want it is just silly. If you dont take it someone else will.

Lol....I'd consider a pilot waiting for aggro in empire as a bonus. If he shoots, I can shot back and CONCORD wont lift a finger.

If I'm in a low sec system and I find them, I take care of them with kinetic missiles. Can't have idiots with old cans graphically lagging my fights.
But high sec...well that's just plain irritating. An expiration timer of a couple weeks would be a great addition to the game. ___________________________________________

I alway wondered how you know if someone picked up my can allowing me to kill them. Where does it tell you this.
Also to the op what i would do is, if you want to steal the cans make a Safe spot take them and go to the safe spot or go if anyone from that corps entered local

If the corp is no longer in the system then they are trully abandoned, take them. Should they return, safespot.
You can always ask in local if you may have them, works for me. Just keep an eye out for a trap.
