Please explain to me the following observation I made:
There are some systems on the map (Egghelende... just to name one) which is REALLY red when you activate the "pod kills in the last hour" or "pod kills in the last 24 hour". This is constant for many weeks (at least) now.
Don't people use the map? Don't they listen to what other peoples say?
Those systems are low sec and not THAT close to the places where noobs start.

Could there be other reasons than just piracy for the red? Some type of warzone perhaps?

At least for Egghelende I'm sure it's pure piracy.

Jump in and have a look
Some systems (egghelende, rancer) get heavily camped. They are almost all busy low sec routes.
As for "Don't people use the map? Don't they listen to what other peoples say?", the truth is no. Then they are surprised when they get ganked. It happens.

The reasons so many pilots get podded in systems like Egg and Amamake is because they are low sec through points to reach other areas of EVE. Now you'd think...YOU'D THINK that for example the Minmitar Empire would say "Hey...maybe we should set up an alternate high sec route." or "Hey...maybe we should send in the Navy and secure that system since it's an often used trade route and so many of our pilots are getting killed there."
But noooooo...

I just wonder because Egghelende and Ammamake are easily avoidable by using a different route through high sec (there is one, but it's quite long).
Maybe it's even good that some pies have a playground there so at least they leave the friendly people in 0.0 alone.

I don't know if it is still there, but there has been a bug with the map browser not updating. I have had ships destroyed in systems that my browser says there are no kills and when I check with a corp mate, I find out that it is a hot spot and there have been many kills.
I don't know how to fix the browser issue without clearing the cache. -------------------------------------- Heavy Lag Spike II belonging to EvE Cluster Node #0815 hits your Connection, wrecking your latency to 998ms |

True but it's a very long way round. If traders factor in travel time into their cost/profit margin they probably find that the long trek isn't very profitable.
Not to mention all the quality Agents in those systems "Hey come on down to my office, I'm located in gank central." or the missions given that are done in those systems "Hey, can you deliever some Quafe to gank central?".
Seriously. NPCs, the Empires, are completely oblivious to the fact of what actually happens in EVE in relation to players.

if nobody lost their ships, eve economy would have been long dead.
you dont have to accept missions that lead you into bad places.. but i guess you decided that the reward outweights the risk when you clicked YES

Hard to take a calculated risk when the game gives you false information to evaluate.

Well those systems are so infamous, you really have to live behind the moon to not know they're pirate hotspots. So why people still go there en masse is beyond me. I guess when Chuck counted past infinity, he found human stupidity.
Not that I mind it, it's good to have so many pirates concentrated in systems I never even come close to ;)

Damn skippy! Somebody gotta fix Min traffic! First traffic control then I'm gonna boot errr..I mean fix Concord!
But obviously the answer to the OP's question is that enough players hope to get lucky and not get ganked while doing a mission or moving goods in places like Egghelende. So they throw the dice and pray. Now, pilots can just refuse to do any business that has anything to do with that area of space and thus starve the pirates.
But nooooo...

These are the systems where the True Pirates operate. These pirates with their incredible talent and skill (their large fleet, warp bubbles, gate snipers) vs your one solo ship are able to teach all valuable lessons in blobbing (zerging, griefing) those less talented. It's all evident if one were to just look up the Killboard of these most talented pirates. They have truly cut a great nitch for themselves as they rid the eve universe of all those rookie ships and shuttles that can be such pests.
No, people don't use the map sadly enough or figure that they will be the one lucky solo to make it through against these pirates of incredible Talent. What they don't realize is these pirates have very rare skills trained up that require their talent to execute. Overwhelming Force lvl 5 Bring many more friends lvl 5 Advanced Zerging Lvl 5

It's called making money.
When people do missions do they try to make it a fair fight against the NPCs or do they try to do it with as little risk as possible?
Pirates kill things for money, it's not their obligation to fight fair.

Phelan... surely you know better than to post sense on eve forums..
some users of these forums seem to think that a pirates role is to die regularly (Which i succeed at spectacularly)
In fact the idea is too kill/ransom - quickly/easily and limiting the risk to our ships as much as possible.
A fair fight is NOT good business

Actually there is a alternative route around egghelende that is not that long, the problem is that you have to move through it manually.. If you set your autopilot on it will move you through Egg...
Have moved through that route a few times myself, so I know there is one way around it.

Well, for Egghelende/Amammake , like someone else said, these are majors regional hubs and a lot of people dont pay attention to the stats on map, so they get a surprise after jumping in Egg.
Also dont forget that a big part of the kills in Egg are due , not only to snipping gangs like B&K boys, but also because pirats shoot at each other, either at planets while scanning the belts or also sometimes, you attack someone in belts and another pirat jump in and kill both of you
In fact, 90% of the fights I had there was with other pirats.
