I'm posting this so that other new players might not make the same mistake as me.
Pretty much as soon as you start in Eve, people will tell you you're not safe in highsec. You'll hear about suicide Kestrel alt accounts, and how they can destroy you before Concord responds. A shield extender and some hardeners, maybe even an armor plate is all you need to buy time for Concord to intervene against a couple of Kestrels, so you fit that stuff and you relax, knowing there's little chance that a big gang of Kessys will bother to gank little old you in the noob corp.
At this point, it's easy to get complacent. I did, and I don't want YOU to make the same mistake. Here's my own sorry saga as an example:
3 and a half months into Eve, after LOTS of mission running, I was doing pretty well for myself. I'd made a lot of friends, had a few ships in the hangar, and was starting to see the rewards from many, many hours of play. Pretty much all the ISK I'd earned was tied up in a Navy Issue Augoror, and some faction modules. Not wanting to lose them in combat, I ferried them to Jita to sell them.
2 jumps away from Jita, I got target painted and hit by the siege launchers of a suicide Raven piloted by a 3 year old player. My Badger was destroyed almost instantly (a med shield extender and some resist amps don't do much against that onslaught). Over three months of work disappeared in a few seconds - total loss in isk value around 350 million isk.
It was only then that I really thought about the mechanics of suicide ganking. A player can buy a Raven, insure it for a third of its cost, gank you while a friend or alt picks up your can, and then get back their original payment in insurance. These costs are very small to an experienced player.
But what about the security hit, you're no doubt thinking? The guy who ganked me had a sec status of 3.9 before, and 3.6 after. A drop of 0.3 is nothing in real terms, and will be made back by killing a few rats in 0.0
In conclusion, new players need to bear in mind that many of the vets can and will kill you for a very small outlay, wherever and whenever they like. Eve allows them to do this, and they will barely notice the cost or the penalty. Trust me, losing everything you worked for can completely ruin your Eve experience. Don't let it happen to you.

That's a very interesting point, about the insurance.
Would be cool if an insurance contract is voided if you are in violation of CONCORD law. After all, if a murderer's car is trashed by the police in a chase, does State Farm give him a new car?

Sorry to hear about your loss but why didnt you just fly the Navy Issue Augorur and stick any excess items in your hold.
To the above poster 350mil even if half that survived would of payed off the raven. be nice if there were better gadgets to use that could stop missiles like there are for turrets.

Yeah it would still recoup the cost, but not as much, at least.

To be honest, if you're dumb enough to fit 500m in a ship worth 500k, its your fault.
Don't carry vast amounts of ISK in something made of paper. This is a lesson that hopefully most EVE players will not have to learn through experience.

Suicide Gankers hang around Jita all the time. I do wish that concord would void the insurance and that would stop a few players from doing it.

That is a good idea... Whether or not it would stop the suicide gank, it does make sense.

Your better thought to sell that Navy Aug would have been to fly it over there yourself - its a more diffult target that's faster and much harder to kill, not to mention they'd have no financial incentive to do so.
Sorry to hear about your loss though, hope you recover fast.

When I'm going to be carrying valuable cargo, I always run out in a shuttle and make a set of insta jumps for the trip. It takes a little extra time (OK, sometimes a lot of extra time), but I judge the time in terms of the possible loss to suicide gankers and I figure it's worth the time. My exposure to these people is thus minimized. As far as I know, I've never been threatened, but I'm through there pretty fast so I don't know for sure. Your experience just confirms my caution.

Make a courier mission, cancel it, then don't take the shrink wrap off the items. Prevents people from scanning what they are.

...and then people assume that you're taking something valuable, and gank you anyways for it.
However, one thing that's becoming popular is getting a T2 BPC, and hauling it in a shuttle - it costs a few mil at most depending on what it is, but might provoke the gankers. You die, their ships die, and they get something that's not nearly the cost of their ships...you also get a great laugh, karma ftw .

Another way to fix suicide ganking in my opinion would be to allow the players of eve to police it themselves.
Concord does work mostly... but maybe add a 15 day killrights flag that is open to the entire corporation/alliance of the victim that was attacked in violation of concord laws.

Nah, too many courier missions runners. Doubt courier packages in industrials are worth to suicide on. Courier packages in ceptors and shuttles OTOH are more juicier. ---------------- RecruitMe@NOINT!
