I am considering a charity fund to raise money for small Industrial corps to hire Mercs to take care of problems such as pirates and war decs. I get a lot of requests from small Indy corps for help and I see their #1 problem is the inability to afford support. The charity fund will work off donations, raffles, lotteries. The funds will be kept in a publicly viewable account over at EVE Galactic Bank. Applicants will of course have to meet certain criteria.
My main obstacle is avoiding scammers. The criteria for applying has to be strict but still accessable. There also has to be a way of doing certain background checks. I'm no lawyer so I am wondering what the community thinks about this idea and it's execution.

An interesting idea but if you're not careful it could be open to all sorts of abuse.

You'd have to make the fund directly pay for mercenaries (of which the industrial corp has no choice with), to avoid scams.
If the industrial corp got the money, or could choose which mercenaries, you'd have your money scammed out from under you in weeks.

It is very easy for industrialists to defend themselves in Empire war. Empire war is not like 0.0 warfare. In Empire, you want to use Concord and sentries to kill your enemies >_< ---------------- RecruitMe@NOINT!

For whatever reason (and I am not making a debate about such) there are Industrial corps who wish to hire Mercs to take care of combat for them. However many younger corps do not even have the funds to hire a proper Merc corp as we know a good Merc don't come cheap.
It's a good point about hiring the Mercs directly for them. Perhaps I can have Merc corps offer bids on the contract and the lowest bidding Merc corp that the Industrial corp finds to be acceptable for the job gets the contract and payment.

Well that's what we call "invitation to tender". The EVE-O forums can already pretty much be used for that.
Dipolmatic relations and friendships with other corps can go a long way when an industrial corp is faced with a war like this. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

You do know the problem with this kind of warfare, dont you? It is quite boring to play Little Bo Beeps whenever you login...

Wouldn't it be easier for you to set up a corp with a bunch of like-minded PvPers (or even paid mercs) and just accept requests from people in empire wars, then dec their enemies and join in

Now see...the question of why an Industrial corp would hire Mercs is being debated and that's not what this topic is about. There are numerous Merc corps in EVE offering their services, taking contracts, ever day. So any questioning of the validity of Mercenaries in EVE should be directed at them. I am merely trying to bridge a gap.
For example I recently got a request from an Industrial corp who was war dec'd. The aggressing corp was not much larger than the Industrial corp but of course 1) they were PvP skilled and 2) they had hired Mercs to assist them. So the Indy corp is looking to hire Mercs but cannot afford the high fees. So I thought "OK, lets do a charity fund for situations like these".
The Mercs can apply for the contract, the Indy corp can agree on the hiring of the Merc corp, the fund will provide the payment.

Would it be possible to have the industrial corp pay the fee in services?
Ships, modules, ammunition, reprocessing, minerals, hauling, POS supply, ... Each service rated in advance, goods by the market value, ...
Security/collateral could come in form of a complete member list handed over to a trustworthy third party, along with some goods for the time of the contract. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

Why would anyone hire mercs just to harrass an innocent industrial corp?
I can see some lame guys deccing innocent corps for easy kills, but hiring mercs and blowing hundreds of millions for that?
Plus a industrial corp that does nothing but earn ISK in Empire should have some money to spare for low end mercs or frigs and cruisers to fight back, i would guess... Those guys must be insanely rich now that im thinking about it...

Well i generally dont think this will work, but i generally feel that small industrial corps (maybe excluding 1 or 2) mostly dont contribute anything towards the market(maybe ore prices) and just sit there whining that they are miners. ><

You have a lot of faith in people. I'd give it hours or days, depending on how quickly money was put into it.

I think your main issue here would be your "charitable status" getting people to donate to fix other corps problems will be hard IMHO.
Charities in RL work because people want to see tigers in the wild do well and dont want to see children getting abused in their homes. It's called a consience. Thus charties like WWF and NSPCC can raise money. Eve OTOH is not a place where people are all that concerned with another industrial corps welfare.
you might have some sucess as a result of the novelty value effect but ongoing fundraising would be problematic IMHO.

I think you'd have better luck starting your own pirate-hunter corp. You could start by funding yourselves with your own wallets. If you helped enough small corps, you might be able to get donations from them if they became larger, or donations from other players after you have more of a reputation.

This may have a chance of working, but on a smaller scale. Maybe when a small industrial corp member is podded by a pirate, they could donate to this fund, rather than contribute to that pirate's bounty. The fund could then pay for a bounty hunter to track down and terminate the pirate.
