I just got myself a comedy killmail!
Having learned that Interceptors are now invulnerable to warp bubbles, I built myself a dual prop Taranis. I have always had bad luck with the buffer tanked ranis because I can never seem to kill the drones fast enough. So this time I tried a more tanky variation with these new Ancillary reps.
The Story
So I figure I'd go down to providence first. I spent the night hunting things in N8 and R3, before realizing that people do not rat in belts anymore and all the ships that I thought were in safespots were in fact in those new scan sights. Oops!
Deciding to test the Taranis' new bubble invulnerability awesomeness, I fly into a dead end system with 250 npc kills, TXJ-II. I fly through a massive bubble camp like it was not even there (\0/ Whooo hooo!) and after a few seconds I end up warping on top of a gigantic hulk blob protected by one Caracal. Heavy missles and a swarn of warriors hurt... I got out in half structure.
Proud of myself, and patting myself on the back for my awesome piloting skills (and with a touch of butt pucker) I moved back out to N8 hoping to find a Cerberus that i could not find the night before do to my lack of knoweldge.
But on the way... Dun, dun dun!
I find a procurer just chilling in an ore sight.
My Comedy Killmail
I warp in and I seem to be a bit to far away. His hobgoblins do not immediately engage, so I figure he is either AFK or shitting himself. I begin to chew into his shields with 200DPS feeling pretty good about my near perfect skills in this ship. But wait... his shields are not going down... at all?
Hmmm....
Let me turn off my Ab, maybe my traversal is to high. I mean... I was packing .79 tracking, that should be good enough? Guess not. Oh well let's orbit at 500m with no ab. I mean, this guy does not seem to be paying attention.
Hmmmmmm.....
I double check to see if my guns are actually on. They are...wtf, he has a pretty fantastic tank
Finally His Drones Engage
Yar! I start taking them out like a mofo! Pop goes one! Pop goes two! He is not even trying to recall them as they take damage. Pop goes three!!!
But then pop goes me /0\
My Question For Warfare and Tactics
So how is the whole solo PVP thing in the Taranis these days? I mean as in, non interceptor to interceptor combat? Also, have mining ships been buffed or was this guy like... ya know... sporting some kind of fantastic faction procurer tank? I felt like I was fighting a HAC with a sweet shield regen. My guns didn't even make a dent.
I have tried your standard buffer tank and I have tried the new and improved Ancillary repers on these things. I have next to perfect skills in guns, drones, speed and interceptors level 5. But damn, I just can't kill 5 drones before I die when I am on my own.
My Conclusion
I suspect that you actually need two interceptors in order to kill 5 drones fast enough, before one interceptor dies. Can any of you confirm or deny this conclusion with your own experiences? Am i missing something? Some new module I forgot about, being that I have not in a year?
Anyway Halp! I was 1v1'd by a Procurer!!!!11111

I don't fly the things. But I enjoyed your story very much. You sir have the balls to post this story of your own comedy derp. Immense balls that can be seen from space. CCP, there are off buttons for ship explosions, missile effects, turret effects, etc. "Immersion" does not seem to be harmed by those. So, please give us a persisting-áoff button for the jump gate and autoscan visuals. |

Well... that explains it
Now putting aside the uber tanked procurer part, are you guys finding that it is possible to reliably kill 5 warriors/hobs in your interceptor before you explode? While still keeping enough DPS on your fit to actually kill something?

I haven't been able to play in a few months now but once I'm back in a months time I'll let you know :P I used to be able to effectively kill drones with my ranis, Involved speed tanking more than anything, A good thing to try is to get a wide orbit on your opponent, Say 8-9km, or as far as you can while still keeping point on your enemy, Keeping MWD active and shoot drones with Null as they'll naturally trail behind you, but as I said its been a 3 months since I last played so things may well have changed with the new expansion |

Thx, I'll try that and see if it helps.

Best way to deal with drones and something i've had a lot of success with, is if your attacking a ship that you know has drones, pre load null before engaging. Pulse your mwd. And just watch drones get blasted off field with your excellent tracking. I've held a procurer on a gate before for about 15 mins, while he kept trying to kill me with his drones, before he realised he could de-agro and jump out. I personally find that always rolling with null loaded first [if your going for the gank] is best when flying a ranis, then when you need the deeps switch out to ether your antimatter, or if you're feeling peckish, a sprinkling of void. Also null lets you deal with ships approaching you to get you to pull tackle off a target. With an into its best to hold a target hostage, wait for the "rescue" then fight said "rescue". a lot more fun than killing a mining barge.
Hope this helps, and good luck on your next fight. S T R A T C O M is open for recruiting. Check the Link bellow for details.

It is very doable in a well fitted Crow with MSE ( in my case ), you orbit at long-range put in faction LML's and you can even kill 2 sets easily because they mostly miss you, but it still depends on your fit, speed, skills. Others might have some other tactics with other interceptors but I fly Crow only so my 2 cents. |

Well here is your problem, its an amok proc. The reason he didnt engage you is because if you looked at his bio he is NRDS you were neut to him being in an npc corp. After you engaged him he engaged you, sadly you died he emptied his hold and continued to make isk while you sob deeply because you got beat by a mining barge. Have fun with that solo pvp in an inty brah. |

Procurers have fully bonused drones now, and will tear up a brawling Interceptor almost as well as a Vexor. Your death is the expected outcome of that fight.
Remember, not only are you taking 50% more damage, but you're taking that extra damage for longer because each individual drone takes ~50% longer to kill. That is much, much harder to deal with than unbonused drones and really not something a Taranis is up to handling. |

Damn... I am way out of the loop. Drone bonused mining ships, what will CCP think up next.

I had much the same reaction as you did when I joined back up recently. (Including my reaction to the whole "bubble immunity" thing.) CCP decided to give each barge hull a different role, and the Procurer hull happened to get the "Godlike Tank" role. With the latest release, CCP tweaked them slightly again, and the Procurer hull is now the "Godlike Tank with Drones" role. CCP decided that mining ops shouldn't always need a dedicated PVP player guarding them, so they made Procurer hulls halfway decent PvP ships. You can PvP fit a Procurer (web/scram/tank/drones) and still have it mine at full capacity, even if that capacity is less than a Covetor hull, and into a smaller ore hold than a Retreiver hull.
On the other hand, Covetor hulls are paper thin, and they don't have any kind of drone bonus. If you see one of them, go for it.
tl;dr version: don't try to solo a Procurer in a 'Ceptor. Go for a Covetor or Retriever instead.
Side note: I've never been a fan of brawling 'Ceptors (I prefer AFs for brawling and Fleet 'Ceptors for speed tank). Yet, at the same time, I love flying a gank-fitted Thorax, so maybe I'll have to give this a try.
'Ranis + bubble immunity + DCU II + new Reinforced Bulkhead (penalizes cargo now) = viable hull tank nulsec solo roamer? Reading Comprehension: a skill so important it deserves it's own skillbook.
I don't avoid getting shot, but I do generally avoid getting shot first. |

The new Bulkheads still take 40 CPU, so it's not something most Frigates are going to have room for and the bonuses aren't amazing, even on literal hull-tankers like the Taranis.
That said, if you positively must do this...
Quote:[Taranis, Literal Hull Tank] Damage Control II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Reinforced Bulkheads II
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I Faint Epsilon Warp Scrambler I Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
Light Ion Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Ion Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Ion Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot]
Small Processor Overclocking Unit I Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I
4k EHP (which actually isn't that great), around 2/3s of which are in hull.
As far as the Taranis as a solo roamer: your target selection is pretty limited. You're not overwhelmingly powerful in general and you outright can't handle most ratting ships, but you can tear apart vulnerable targets in pretty short order (especially other light frigates) and if you can cover a lot of ground to run up your chances of catching someone being stupid or unlucky. |
