I was thinking about making a charcter to work for Serpentis... what would be the benfits and downsides of doing this?
(Also, if anybody knows, what's the best pirate corp. to work for?)

The biggest thing is you can get faction battleship BPCS, but faction battleship BPCs arent worth as much because you can just kill npcs for them... ---------------------------

NPC pirates are like faction navies, just a bit different.
what manufacturer corps often do is NAP with pirate corps. this means that the manufacturing corp is warrented protection that the pirates will provide (most of the time), and the manufacturing corp is allowed to mine in the pirates space, in return for hte manufacturers providing the pirates equipment.
not sure how muvh of that happens with alts but... --------------

There are a number of problems with this and I wouldn't reccomend it if you aren't in an alliance/corp that already lives in said pirate space.
If you don't already have a decent charisma to get the most out social, negotiations and criminal connections expect to sink some time there. Second you need some production abilities to recover ammo losses and possibly enough isk to rebuild your battleship if it is toasted.
True you can achieve the greatest mission payouts and some exclusive rewards like pirate implants and faction ship bpcs but the downside it can very risky without instas. Additionally you will be taking security hits, some very large ones once you reach the lvl four missions, and that could jeopardize your empire travels given empire navies will spawn to attack you.
More importantly the sec hits hurt your ability to access R&D agents should you ever decide to try the lottery.
Thus for the amount of time and energy you're putting into this you'd be better served finding an agent in the lowest security empire system you could find using this or do 0.0 complexes & ratting for more impressive isk returns.
A final option is to join Corelli Corp or Dust Angel's True Core and see if they can help you out.
