I am sick of it CCP, and I want it changed. I almost agree on some level... but not the whole thing.
I would suggest that there should be nothing a 3rd party tool has access to which isn't available directly in-game (a jump sphere or a measure tool in the map is needed). A 3rd Party program may be able to do many things at once (you can calculate how long it will take you to train a skill, you can read it off the character sheet - but EVEMon can tell you how long a 100 skill queue will take) or combine several things together simultaneously (Is my Logi cap stable?) but I don't think there should ever be a need to use a 3rd Party tool, nothing which you can only determine through them. 3rd Party tools should (IMHO) be a convenience rather than a crutch. If I want to know whether I can jump a carrier from system 'A' to system 'B' then I should be able to determine that in-game... but DOTLAN can tell me if I need to stop off at 'C', 'D' and 'F' on the way, how many 'topes it will take and whether there are stations in those systems in one neat and easy package. |

Actually, I agree in principle that these should be integrated with the game long term (even if it means buying the code from 3rd party developers). But, just to be awkward because you're hiding behind a silly named alt and being a bit childish about it, I'm going to pretend not to.

I always thought it kinda cool that eve breed the sort of player commitment and ingenuity that folk would go out and create useful items for use in game.
As for specific points raised above, (1) the in-game map has a lot of functionality - you are obviously not using it right; and (2) you do not want a universe where everyone had perfect knowledge of markets conditions everywhere at all times as it would eliminate/limit the possibility of obtaining profits by moving goods from region to region. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

OP, here's some food for thought. You've obviously not though this through. Lets look at the third party tools you are criticizing.
DOTLAN: Absolutely more useful than the in-game map. I really hate how the in-game map takes over the screen. DOTLAN is there with a simple alt+tab or in the in-game browser. The in-game map is useful for tons of other things (like explo), but I really don't need DOTLAN embedded in it (which would cause all that DOTLAN information available with an alt+tab to disappear).
EVEMon: I can browse skill queues for MULTIPLE CHARACTERS at once. I can click and drag and copy and exchange and do all kinds of sharing things I couldn't do if the tool were inside the game. Logout. Login. Change something. Logout. Login. No thanks.
EFT: Same as above. Lets me consolidate and share fits between alts. Does this mean the in-game fitting tool shouldn't change? No, but EFT lets me emulate a character with all V skills, or look at other alts while I'm playing with one character.
ISIS is awesome. Also, have you never looked at ship mastery plans?
I will agree with you only to this point: The map is terribly implemented. I don't like that it takes over the entire screen, and there are too many clicks involved to change views. But do we really need SOV data on it? I don't think so.
And using a throwaway alt.. really? Really shows your commitment to this idea.

Another poster with reading issues..
I will try and make this as simple as I can.
CCP, by releasing the API code to such an extent as they have and by continuing to modify / add to it, they have allowed their paying customers to develop tools which most people would of already expected to be in the game.
So to recap.. CCP release / maintain / add / modify API code which allows us, the paying customer to develop tools which means they do not have to spend time + money to do themselves.
Let me put it another way, things such as a fitting tool like EFT, a skill management system such as EveMon, a map with the ability to plot a route such as dotlan are things you would expect a 11 year game like Eve to have.
We are not talking about some monumental technical challenging additions here, however there is zero motivation for CCP to bother with any of these things as they already exist and do the job fine.
My surprise is that other developers for other game haven't done similar things. Why spend time and money creating certain aspects of your game, things which most people would expect to see if your paying customer can do it for you?
Then again maybe it is only in Eve where the players (did I mention we were paying customers?) have no issue developing tools which really should already be in the game.
Either way since CCP have been letting go of so many talented developers and many other have left of their own accord over the last 12 months, something tell me it will not change any time soon. |
