Is it ever coming into the game or has that idea been thrown away?

I don't think its a good idea to add it, makes it too easy for every single person in the game to have all the rarest loot. Fundamentally, adding that skill would be like a sanctioned duping program. ==========

It won't work 100% of the time tho, there would be balance to it.

With level 5 Reverse Engineering skil you would only have a 50% chance of success. So it is going to cost people a lot of money to reverse engineer rares.

it should be more like 2% per level IMO

Reverse engineering only works with items that have yet to be added to the game, or so the devs said a couple months ago.

Dumb statement that.
If their not in the game, you can't RE them. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!

Its ingame it just has a very low sucess rate atm. When its better coded and you've all got higher skills i'm sure it'll work alot better.

Edited by: Cao Cao on 27/09/2003 23:44:13 Reverse engineering should work at best 1/1000 times. Think of all the 27% cargo expanders out there...

RE was working on Chaos some time ago (would work on TQ as well if we had the RE skill). You can't RE pirate loot, only stuff that's sold on market.

You are my favourite GM (right after Arkanon) you rule.
Post more intersting stuff like this
Taken from the May 29th 2003 Devchat at EveGate . <Muaddid> Q: When will sentry gun and station and similar construction pods be introduced on the market? <Hellmar> we have various player owned entities already implemented. Sentry guns, power/shield generators, field repair mini-stations, mobile refineries. We are still working out the last tidbits of how they can be over taken, what is the penalty of having a sentry gun kill a n00b etc. and we have been a bit busy with plugging the holes that people have found.I would say that you'd start to see these items on the market in about 2-3 weeks, very expensive to begin with |

NO problem with it, as long as the success rate isn't too high AND any BP you get from it is a limited run :-)

Perhaps the limitation on reverse engineering of special items will be the need to have rare Prototype versions of the equipment. In regards to regular equipment, there should just be a small chance of success so the costs in destroyed equipment would come close to the cost of the blueprint itself.

And why not 1/100000000000000000? Ridiculous!

LOL....still no RE stuff in game. The devs did this to themselves on chat. Said that RE was in the game but then after a couple of ppl complaining...they said that it is in the game but there are no items to RE. Now it's a totally different tune....RE is not in the game.....hmmmm.....no wonder I quit playing.

Even if it only works 5% of the time, imagine 5000 people trying to reverse engineer things. That's 250 successful tries per cycle. That means every cycle there's 250 more original blueprints of lord knows what in the market.
Reverse Engineering should be without a doubt the hardest thing to acheive in the game. I'm talking a character devoted completely to researching, a lot of skills, a lot of resource requirements, that type of thing. If it's not near impossible it will quickly destroy the market just like blueprint copies did.

You should be able to RE anything in the game...not just pirate drops or market items...but everything. You should get an original BP copy....but these copies should be at a much greater mineral requirement that "real" originals. This would give everyone the ability to get a bp for any item in the game.
I agree that the chance of it working needs to be between 10 and 20% with all relevent skills maxed.

Edited by: Mr Box on 03/10/2003 01:52:18 I dont like the idea that re is based on pure luck as to if you get a blueprint or not. In my opion it would be better if when you RE somthing you get back the plans for part of the item/ship you are reverse enginnering.
Idea behind that being in a ship you have many many differnt parts to get it working (engines, generator, cap, hull, etc) the more complex the ship(tech1,2,3,etc) the more componets. In order to get the complete blueprints to a titan you would need atleast 150-1000 possably more different components. For a frigate you would need maybe 5. For say a basic co-proccessor you would only need the one.
When you do a RE have it gives you plans/part for the item, the particular part it gives would be random, so if you were very unlucky you could do ten in a row and get the same part each time.
Also another possablity to add to that for modded items, or possably all items you need to have blueprints for reference. For example if you wanted to RE a CU-vapor you would need the blueprints for miner1.
If done extremly well you could have it so you could mix and match certain parts. Very usful for ships. Example you have completely reserched a thorax, but you dont want to include its drone bay, instead you want to give it a smaller drone bay, from say a random frigte and use the space left over in hull for the cargo from a bigger ship, possably an indy although that said, id have it so a cargo bay needs more space than a drone bay to store the same volume(simply for balance issuses).
Any how thats the general idea please if you can dont pay too much attention to the whole custom ship idea, as I literaly though of it as I was writing the first part of the post, so I havnt truely thought it through.
Your views would be apresiated just to know if im the only one who thinks its a good idea.
