I have been playing for a while and I have never tried to produce items, I know you need a blue print to start production but I dont want to spend the outrageous ISK that is required for most blue prints. I know there is a way to research items to make new blue prints but I don't know how. Can someone please tell me?
I heard you have to rent a lab but I have been unable to find a location where I can rent one and yes I have science level 1.
Thank you.

My guide should cover everything you need.
To answer your specific questions though: The only way to get a blueprint without buying it is to get a R&D agent and cross your fingers and wait. Or you can get a nice person to just give it to you, but that's unlikely. Tech 1 module blueprints aren't that expensive, really. Even frigate blueprints are only a couple of million ISK.
The Players Guide is highly out of date as far as science and industry go. Now you just locate an installation via the Science and Industry button, and rent the lab/factory slot (aka "assembly line") for the duration of the job.

If you check escrow you can pickup bpc's (blue print copies) for most common ships and modules. They will be limited to create only a certain amount but are much cheaper and a good way to find out what is worth buying the bpo of and building properly. ----- Geotech is recruiting! |

I just wanna add what Ozzie implied but I'll state it explicitly: you can't research BPC's. Just in case you didn't know. ___________________________________________

Is there any secret hint for getting a vacant lab slot for doing material research on a BPO?
Currently I am in "The Forge" and all research slots are occupied here.
Any ideas? Or simply wait for good luck? Or fly around to other regions? What region has best chances to find a vacanct slot?

You just need to put your job in the queue. Do that, and your job will sit around on its hands waiting, and you won't have to.
