Why did i choose the road to piracy?
My career changed following a spanking i recieved as a three week old player in her 1 day old thorax. I started the game wanting to be a brainy and geeky scientist then three weeks later, a new thorax (woot im flying a cruiser), 18mill of BPC's in hold belonging to acquaintances (my bright idea at making my first real isk) and naive autopiloting through essence whilst painting my toenails, Tityanas life changed.
i jump into Vitrauze and POOF! before i could blink i was in a clone vat and 18mill indebt already. Didnt even have time to see the red flashing boxes on my overview and i probably wouldnt have known what it meant anyways! Id felt the sting of Sun Ra's Tempest (♥ u babe), Frankinator's Raven (♥ u too) and Capt Spock's Tempest (who the f&ck are you?).
I wasnt mad, well a little, my evemail was enough to warrant being on the MOTD hatemail of the day for a while, but damn, i was in awe! i remember thinking WOW, i wanna do that, that was amazing, I wanna be just like Frankie and Ra when i grow up! lol And from that day forward, i knew where i wanted to go!
So to the fellow meanies out there, what made you choose the road to piracy?

I joined the game intending to PvP, but the whole "Big 0.0 alliance blobfest" thing seemed kinda boring, and I wanted to be able to shoot whoever I wanted. Anyhow, one of my friends (the same one who made me get the game) joined a pirate(/merc/whatever) corp and said it was fun, so I thought "why not?" and haven't looked back since.

I Was a carebear and pretty good fleet pilot for 2 years The only illegal shooting I had done had all been mis-understandings (possibly caused by alcohol once or twice ) One day I got an offer of a place in a pirate corp who's founder I work with in RL and though "yeah why the hell not" Gave up being CEO of my corp the next day and went and joined them.
Its a refreshing change not to have to think "Am I allowed to shoot this person?" or "Will there be any backlash?" We get backlash and thats just fine.
I may go back to being a law abiding citizen of Eve again but ATM I'm enjoying the change.

LoL !
i did because I was cruising along in My Griffin which took me Weeks to get the isk for (Looking Back I dont see how now) and it was about 1 hour old.
When I went into a system on autopilot Called OBE I think it was, All of a sudden my sheild Vanished. From this 250 Hit. Then I saw what was hitting me, It was this evil Git CAlled Hammerhead, I petitioned it under Laser exploit thinking there was no way a Stabber could hit me for that Massive amount of damage (he was about 100k away) And Got a response saying stop being such a nOOb thats easy to do . I Vowed to get my revenge on that Evil git if it was the last thing I ever did. It wasn't until about 1 year ago I realised that he's a GM. that I gave up my pursuit..... :)
Damn You hammerhead ! You made Me !

Ive stopped piracy now but what made me start was getting my first cruiser blown up in the first 5 minutes of owning it by KJEWLA (will never forget that name ;p) he sniped me with his tempest i believe.
I took it well, i dont know if he remembers but i covoed him and congratulated him and asked him about piracy. We talked for a few days and i started getting very interested in the subject until i thought right, today im going to start pirating. I bought myself another caracal and went on a killing spree (caracals are very underated).

0.0 alliance 'real' PvP really bored me.
Only so long you can sit at a gate getting 5 FPS, watching the warp-bubbles flicker, waiting for an enemy fleet that will never come because they know you're there.
Got more equal and close fights in low-sec in the first week than six months of 0.0.

i came to this game with 3/4 members of my old UT99 "clan". this clan was known on clanbase for being ********s and generally ****ing people off, and when i started eve and realised withing like, 3 days that mining SUCKED FAT BALLS, and we started taking trips down to the nearest low-sec system 3 jumps away and killing ratters. turned out my CEO knew Trev from back in MASS and made us fly with kr0m as he didnt like us pirating, and then on.....
in a nutshell, i like to **** people off.

There was two resons i started piracy, the first was that pirates are cool. i awnted to be cool aswell. and the the fact is pirates are more likely to become well known / respected / feared etc than a miner in a corp nobody has heard of.
so 1) i wanted to be famous
the 2nd reason for the piracy choice was kinda odd as a noob i had a 0.0 sec status as you do.. and whatever i did it wasn't goingup and i felt like a noob. so i thought oh if i kill some pople or pod a few friends alts then ill have an uber looking sec status unlike them. it was only after i realised that - sec status = no high sec --------------------

My life story is like yours. Mass gang ganks in 0.4s, tricked by so called friends in 0.5s and above made me lost all my ISKs many times. Couldnt recall how many times I had to restart to near 1M ISKs after one to three months.
I didnt go into piracy. Instead I turned into a random killer. If I am in a bad mood, I go kill. If I feel like killing, I go kill. Want to suicide, go to some empire hubs. Hatred, anger, desolation maketh the pilot. ---------------- RecruitMe@NOINT!

There where two reasons i got into pirating. The first was that my first BS, a tempest, which coincidentally wasn't even mine got popped by some guy in the Forsaken Empire, the corp not the alliance and i wanted to be the one doing the blowing up. And secondly i remember seeing Lord zapp mining in his apoc when i was a real n00b and thinking i'd like to have a nice blinkey red thing next to my name as well (and i **** you not that he was mining)

I've been in the huge ganksquads and that doesn't interest me anymore either. I just want the nice, outnumbered fun fights with some risk.

I originally was an anti-pirate, and hated all pies and what they stood for. I continued to get killed, over and over, until my RL friends and corpmates at the time egged me on to go pirating. I initially refused very strongly, until one day I was incredibly bored and found a mining op in a belt - I fired on them, and killed a barge IIRC, and got my first taste of power, and liked it.
Since then, spent the remainder of my time in my first corp CHRL pirating, then spent time away from 0.0 hunting down targets in Black Hole INC...now I run Tharsis, an attempt at a pure PvP and killing corporation.
It's honestly the thrill of the hunt that beats all other professions. The skill required to find a target before they hightail it out of there, hoping they aren't laying a trap for you with corpmates ready to jump into system, fighting against newb blobs in your one little ship. It beats blob warfare anyday .

Gate camping is utterly boring. I would rather mine than camp a gate. At least in mining your mind and hands are kept busy. Doing a gate camp it doesn't take long before you feel your life wasting away one minute at a time.
IMO nothing is worth gate camping.

I started mining with my first account in 0.4 space it was cool not many pirates at all, but what really got to me was the amount of miners coming from more than 10 jumps and striping the belts clean. Funny how this use to bug me so, then one of my corp member left our corp and started killing ppl in 0.4, I would help him hauling his loot to the station and he would tell me how he had killed them. I thought this is so cool killing ppl in their mining barges and BS, so I set up my secound account hence LoganFire was born. Can I just say Hello to all the miners in G****R I am alsways thinking about you. HEHE

Edited by: Vosi on 20/06/2006 01:51:48 I started off in a Empire based carebare corp, did a bit of mining and went out ratting in the belts in gangs of 2 or 3. If we got jumped by a pirate we'd have a go at them too. I kind of got a bit of lust for it then but the idea of becoming one of the bad guys i couldnt really come to terms with. That and my skill points were too low anyway.
After a while i moved out to 0.0 and did the alliance thing. Great fun at first and thrilling to see your first station take and get involved in the big fleet action but it began to tire on me a lot after a little while and i found myself falling asleep at the wheel. Then i decided to have a word with a pirate and see what thats like. I found Frankinator in my address book from the empire days and remembered him being a fairly nice bloke in local. He pointed me towards Verone and veto.
Now i'm podding and greifing my little black heart out.
I love it, makes me feel all warm inside
No more boring freighter opps or getting cross eyed looking at warp bubbles FTW. |

True you can go out and rat. But those are rather boring, and it's basicly no risk if you have a good ship. You could also do deadspaces, but those are predictable and easy to exploit (kiting drones ftw). Basicly everything else is easy, pirating is random unpredictable and exciting.

Originally by: Kadreal True you can go out and rat. But those are rather boring, and it's basicly no risk if you have a good ship. You could also do deadspaces, but those are predictable and easy to exploit (kiting drones ftw).
Or you can shoot at pirates.
Or terrorists.
Or be a merc.
Or start your own little empire in 0.0.
Pirating is not the only pvp combat to had in Eve. I've nothing against it, but I have to scratch my head when people decide they're tired of interacting with npcs and decide their only option left is piracy. There's a rich back story in Eve to play off of that can incorporate a rediculous amount of pvp, and there's a rich history of Eve that has been unfolding ever since the servers went live (a history that is, in its own way, exclusive to any of the written Eve fiction.)
Learn the conflicts, pick a side, and start shooting. There's so much more to Eve pvp than piracy.

I don't really know how I became a pirate, it just happened. Here are some things that might of caused my transformation at one point.
When I was about 2-3 weeks old my artillery stabber ( ) was popped and I was podded by DK Shadow in Hakisalki. Myseld and my friend (as old as me) gave him our best version of a "fight" though before I went down. I didn't exactly smack, but I think i said some things in local I would not of done now and told him that he should have a good day and I will find him. Thats something I still gotta do 1.5 years later hehe. This encounter was my first taste of real PvP in EVE, and while frustrated by the loss I think I enjoyed it. This also gave me the idea of becomming a bounty hunter.
The next 8-10 months I spent mostly mining and kicking npc arse. Took part in fleet scirmishes as part of FSA against RA and as part of FIX against BE (as well as did some gate camps that bored me out of my mind). I got out of FIX space after 5 days of this and swore not to take part in any alliance ever again.
The above mentioned period ended with me getting bored of carebearing. Even though until that point I pretty much hated pirates and only wanted to kill them, I decided to give piracy a try. The reasons at the moment were probably 1) To try something different 2) To become famous 3) To become a belt pirate with a degree of honor rather than camp gates. 4) Motivation by Verone's posts.
Now I am still a bear. One day I want to kill people, another day I feel like mining. But after being a pirate for several months it became a part of me. Its pretty much a mind set I guess.

Edited by: DirtyHarry on 21/06/2006 00:40:57 Well my story started back in the golden age of EvE when _real_ piracy was still possible.
I was a 1 month old noob, that had mistakenly bought ammo in Obe (one of the two pirate hotspots in eve) with the last of my isk for my new moa (lost first one to concordokken).
On my travels through the 0.4 space from Josameto to Obe I checked every local as I jumped in for - ss people. To my horror along the way I met NumberOne from M3G4 corporation, who a few days earlier had made my CEO quit the game due to losing his Moa to him. Luckily I had left my Moa behind in safe space and was in my Merlin but losing that would have ****ed me the **** off too, so I hid at a planet till he left local.
I carried on my merry way to Obe and picked up my Sabertooth light missles for my Moa, and had a look at the map... I then saw P3EN, 0.0 space one jump from my location, I was curious what lay out there in what seemed scary lawless space. After some thought I said to myself, **** it I gotta see this ****.
So there was me jumping into the great unknown of 0.0 space in my little Merlin, my screen loaded and I had a look at local as was the norm, again to my horror I was in a system with a M3G4 member, Hanns, as well as two random corps I cant recall, I quickly warped to a planet and sat there, but local didnt change for 15mins. I decided to check out the belts before going back to the Obe gate for an almost certain death.
I warped to the top belt on the list and as i dropped out of warp I noticed a small box with alot of cans around him, quickly checking its info I found it to be my equal match, a Merlin, so i opened fire thinking I was about to get spanked, but a few seconds later it went pop... my first pvp kill! ^_^.
After grabbing the crappy loot from the can I warped to the Obe gate in P3, which was clear. As i reached jump range a huge bracket entered the side of my screen and I recieved the -ss beep warning (oldschool feature). I quickly noticed it was Hanns from M3G4 in a Scorpion battleship, I semi paniced and fumbled in local "dont shoot me ill just jump out" (or something to that effect), he laughed and started chatting to me and to my surprise was human and not some ebil sob. We chatted for a good while in which I asked all about pirating, what he told me made me realise there was MUCH MUCH more to eve than mining some ****ty roids and hauling it 10 jumps to get a small profit. He suggested I apply to M3G4 and he would recommend me to get in.
I made my way back to Josameto very happy with myself, I even rung my RL friend (char name Teknetos) who was playing at the time to tell him all about it, but he was not interested at that time (though later joined up) due to being a big mining carebear.
So yeah if I had not bought those Sabertooth light missles by mistake, I wouldnt be where I am in EvE today, I would probably be mining in ASCN or some ****. I am ever greatful to NumberOne and Hanns especially for getting me into PvP, which I seemed to prosper in (luckily).
So yeah thats my story, I dont usually write more than a few words in a reply but oldschool pirating is something I feel strongly about and everyone should know how much better the game was in those days, maybe one day CCP will do something about it?

Well I have to admit going from some nub in a merlin to a main key player in helping control the north for a bit with Forsaken Empire (The corp not alliance) before exodus, is a pretty cool thing to quote. Which you forgot to put in your story Dirty :)

No miners = no minerals = no new ships/modules being built = nothing to blow up = sad pvpers and pirates.
You NEED the carebears.
edit: I honestly don't know why I posted this here. I love to skim over the crime and punishment forum, and after having this idea culminating in my head over the course of reading severeal threads, I finally posted it here. I won't take it back, but ignore it if you like.

At first i was anti-pirate and merc while being in Bo20 but there was small amount of outlaws in bleak lands, and corps that waged wars with us mostly did it from stations. :) Then i heard something from my pirate friend - antipirates and pirates differ only in one thing - the amount of victimes, and it was so true. Guess it was then when i decided to become a pirate. Some time later i met few Veto members - Hira'razir, VonakanBuster and Magic Trev, they told me to apply despite the fact that my corp and their often met with guns blazing.i did that and being well under SP requirement, Verone gave me a chance, and never-ending party has started. Afer 2 months i enjoy piracy more and more every day and i cant imagine not being -10
<3 Veto i suppose

hehe ^^ the question was how you got into piracy, where my road went after I became a pirate was verrrrrry long and eventful. Ill write a proper huge story of my life in EvE from my POV from my humble beginnings to the day I quit. But that wont be for a good while as I dont think I will be saying goodbye to EvE any time soon :).

I enjoy PVP, but being in a massive alliance there rules and all that, you have to mine and be in the military etc etc
As a Pirate, i can do what i want when i want (Within reason) -----------------------------------------------

The idea behind piracy isn't to get rid of miners. Besides there will be enough carebears no matter how many you kill (as a pirate I once mined for a ship... ironic).
And actually without pirates there would be a much more limited market for ships and modules.
Anyhow... Back on topic yer maggots
