Edited by: Fergus Malfor on 17/06/2006 05:12:24 Anyone know if there are there any plans to release a version of the Eve client which is OS X compatble? I'm sure that there would be a surge of new players if it was available for macs.

Considering that Macs have about 2% of the market, and there are probably about 7 "Mac gamers" in the entire world, I doubt there would be a "surge of new players"
Just install Boot Camp, Windows XP, and run EVE Online. You could also install Gentoo, Ubuntu, or another distribution of linux and run it under Cedega.

Windows pessemists. The Mac gaming market is far more than 2%. I agree its not half but its not as pathetic as you Bill Gates sympathizers think it is. I have 2 Macs and JUST TO PLAY EVE I built a windows. If EVE were to go offline permanantly id get rid of this crap asap.
Either way using bootcamp isnt the answer. If they were to port it to Mac im sure CCP wouldnt regret it. But thats not up to us. Just please dont disregard Macs because you hate them. (As im sure half of you have never even tried one)
(And on a side note you may all be using macs in the future. Bill Gates told the public he is resigning in the next 2 months and im sure Microsoft will slowly degrade after that.)

I have used a mac, and i thought it sucked. Tbh, i dont know which i dislike more, the way they did their latest commercials, or the mac itself.

I think its sad that us gamers are forced to use one operating system over another. Im a proponent of consumer choice and Microsoft indeed has a unfair grip on what should be a open market.

The Mac does not have things like DirectX, and Win32 API, so writing EvE for the Mac is like a total rewrite, very uneconomical.
Since new Macs are like PCs, just run Bootcamp, and ask CCP to tweak EvE to work nicely on Bootcamp as well. Problem solved.

Aye, this would be a lot easier than making a new client just for macs imo. Sig offline till i fix my domain... |

Since Mac OS is based on FreeBSD it shouldent be the bigest problem making a port for Linux and Mac, the 2 clients should be able to use more or less same code, since FreeBSD can run linux stuff...
So its only the GUI that probaly needs to be coded invidualy, and in Linux you got 2 diffrent "big standards" i would prefere a Linux version thought, so i could run it optimised on my lovly Gentoo mashine :P

Edited by: Angus McLein on 18/06/2006 19:09:36 First, I truly belive once the world of windows has a grip on you it wont let go. For the person who said thay used a Mac and it sucked please explain. Macs are far more user friendly and on numerous (site called Beautiful Feats) acounts it found that a 1.5Ghz mac was 2.4 times faster than a Pentium 4 3.6Ghz. (That has to say SOMETHING about Macs engineering, or the lack thereof in windows based computers)
But the point isnt about 'Why I hate this brand' the point is getting EVE on a mac. (And linux). And boot camp isnt quit as smooth as you make it out to be. In case you didnt notice Windows XP does an amazing trick of sucking 1/3 of your total memory and turns it in to graphics card memory. :P Macs come 'standard' with fairly good gaming cards (unlike any windows based system ive ever seen) so the need for real memory to be added is pointless. Unfortunately Windows XP isnt smart enough (again thank Uncle Gates) to figure out I dont need more gfx memory.
The point? Boot Camp is slow because a ton of my memory is sucked out to be used as gfx memory which in turn doesnt even need it.
So im saying it would run better and more efficiently if you built EVE for a SMART operating system like OSX so mac gamers can actually USE there memory.

Oh and on a lighter note...Yeah I do have to admit the commercials could have been better but if you understand macs then there pretty funny.

There's no real margin for CCP in porting stuff to Linux or MAC, and imo they should concentrate on making the game as good (and bug free) as possible. BUT I think they should be able to form partnerships with Linux or Mac games houses to provide the sort of insider information that would make ports that much easier to produce. How would this work financially? Mebbe there would be an initial cost for the Mac or Linux client which would go to the people who write the port?
Overall I don't think it can hurt CCP much to do this, and potentially they may pick up some more subs at very low financial risk. Whats to lose? -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net

Edited by: WiseMagic on 19/06/2006 10:37:07 If u want EVE on a Mac well on a IntelMac its now possible all u need is to install the software Parallel Desktops http://www.parallels.com/. This is not virtual PC its a software that uses the hardware in the intel Mac as if it was x86 Windows machine. U can install Win2000 or Xp with no prob start XP and ru ne software needed the advantage is that the network card will run at 100mbit or even 1gbit if u have such a card inbuilt to the Mac. The other advantage it use the full power of the x1600xt that is built into the new Intel IMacs. I have tried it out and it works fine.
