I used to play this game when it first came out. Back then, the tempest was a nasty ship to tango with. Now that I have started playing again, I am looking at all the ship options, and it seems like you can have good cruiser skills and get several variations of a rupture that is equall to the tempest at least as far as stats go.
Have battleships in general become sort of obsolete?

Not enough solar panels.
Oh and it does very respectable alpha strike but that's it.

You're reading something wrong, I think.
Artillery Tempest has:
More range
More damage
More hitpoints
More cargospace
More drones
It's superior in every way for artillery based combat, really.
Battleships are, and always will be, *the* mainstay combat ship in Eve.

i think the autotempest is pretty mean if you like close range, and has a midslsot spare to put whatever you want in it.
i like it to the extent of training minnie bs and large proj to lvl 5.
