*waves to Flash* heya mate.
I love this thread, it's actually two threads. One is a group of sensible people discussing potential ideas about a ship which though non-existant i suppose may have a role in Eve if used properly, and the other is 2/3 people flaming.
Best comedy I've read on the forums for a week!
By all means, keep it up, i love the combo of productive argument and pointless flaming, or maybe you could have a convo in game and post the log here? :-D

AMEN!
Not that I’m complaining about the Exhumers and other goodies that have come out since Exodus to spice up what’s commonly referred to as the most boring activity in EVE, but “more toys” are always nice.
I’ve repeatedly suggested adding a Mining Operation Command ship (MOC for short) to the game to provide a core for organized mining to benefit from.
It could or should have a few features that make it uniquely beneficial.
First, it’s cargo capacity should be large, but not even larger than an Iteron 5 can get quite typically already, say perhaps 15,000 – 20,000 m3. The reason being that a MOC should be the one and only ship to have “Ore Compression” capability based on MOC skill level.
Say a 15% to 18% reduction in ore/ice volume per level (does nothing to mineral). This would make for a 75% - 90% reduction in mined material volume, effectively making the cargo space equal to several jettison cans (which the devs already say is exploiting but go to great lengths to never do anything about which has led to the entire problem of ore theft that they refuse to fix to eliminate both problems simultaneously).
The additional benefit of a MOC should be gang bonuses of course, but I actually don’t want more bonuses to yield. It’s redundant, and other benefits are much more in need now that there are so many stacking bonuses to yield already. Of all the possible bonuses that wouldn’t be overpowered I most strongly support RANGE! For God’s sake give miners a range bonus! It wouldn’t hurt ANYTHING in any way, but geeze would it be useful to be able to just get a bit longer reach.
While diverging a bit, can we PLEASE get the devs to stop messing around with silliness like system-wide belts which are nothing more than unnecessarily complicated versions of what we already have, and instead please focus on getting “super massive” belts in place which could simply make use of code that’s already in-game and would only need to be tweaked to be exactly the desired result of MORE rocks and BIGGER ones in a belt.
With top end rigged Covetors and Hulks ripping rocks apart in a few cycles, the need for BIG rocks is at an all time high. The idea of mining glorified sand-grains when half your cycle or more is going down the tubes as waste is less than inspiring. If the plan (as mentioned on the drawing board) is to have some belts that stretch system-wide, or even something close to it, the obvious intent is to provide many rocks to be mined, and while much appreciated, how about don’t mess with the cantankerous system-wide belts that have been worked on and postponed repeatedly already and just make some new belts in systems that are akin to what we already have, just BIGGER with more and larger rocks.

Originally by: Bren Kasir it'd be pointless, anything with greater yield than a covetor/apoc empties roid belts fast enough as it is, a capital class mining laser would kill an entire crokite rock (or similar) for <100% yield most likely.
Bren Kasir
Somehow, I doubt getti9ng over 100% yield would be possible.
You don't mine a 500m3, 5 ton rock and end up with 600m3 and 6tons of minerals.

A mobile refinery that gives perhaps 20% increase to all miners mining on top of your gang bonuses and gang mods.
This ship would have no turrets and fit only 1 strip miner.
The ship itself would be rediculously slow (Like all cap ships) and have a decent drone bay, maybe a little larger than a domi, for both defence and mining.
Here is its loadout
4 highs (only 1 turret and couldn't fit more than 1 strip miner)Make the refining mod a high slot item
5 meds (Sheild tanking, or whatever suits your fancy)
2 Lows (A ship like this doesn't need more low slots)
12k m3 cargo
Now for the Cap mining ship refining mod.
This would be a high slot item that would give you a 30% mining yeild but would take 15 minutes per cycle and would only be able to hold 30k per cycle.
It can't be better than a POS but obviously since its mobile it has a smaller mining yeild.
It would need a heavy escort and would be well a large freighter in essence in terms of agility and size.

I love diggin up old fun forums....how sick would it be to have a cap mining ship...would make building characters much more easy to use no longer a need to have 2-3-4-5 accounts to mine at a decent rate for building ships/equipment.

Imagine the speed up in capital production (especially titans) that would be gained from having the resources to mass produce these ships to already existing capital pilots with just a few skill aditions in alliances such as BoB or ASCN. A ship such as this would make them unstopable (although some would argue that this is already a reality).
A bad idea imo and one which I hope is never realised.
Speed up in producing titans if we had capital mining ships???....Not really,as the mining aspect represents only maybe 25% of the construction process when it comes to titans, since once the minerals are mined, there's roughly 7000 capital ship parts to build(each takes 4 hours or so and take up 10 000m3 of cargo space)and once those are built, they have to be hauled to a POS with a capital ship yard array and a capital ship maintenance array, using a regular hauler since a freighter can't unload at a POS directly,so that means hauling at most 3 capital ship parts per trip for each hauler used(iteron 5's or T2 haulers required with the best cargo expanders in the low slots),and a lot of patience...
Once all that is at the base, then there's a full 8 weeks of wating till the construction of said titan is actually done...Building a mothership is only slightly less painfull with 2000 capital ship parts on average, and 6 weeks of contruction time.
So the main advantage in a capital mining ship is speed up the mineral needs(especially veld and pye),for the construction of smaller carriers and dreads since those use up less than 200 capital ship parts, and can be built in 11 days each and in regular NPC stations to boot,so the next batch of minerals can already be ready for the next dread or carrier,by the time the previous ones are ready to fly, making a nice production chain...
Still wouldn't like to be the guy mining in a capital ship on matter what...

Why not give it a 1,000 m3 cargo hold and give it a high slot that lets it dock with a freighter.
Let it refine and give out gang bonuses, but not mine it's self.

Yes, this is what like. Let it link up with a freighter for all storage operations and you have not a uberminer, but a storage-/refinglink.
Maybe make it yield 10% more for the gang too, but dont let it mine itself.
Problem with making a ship with large cargo capacity and jumpdrive is that it's main use will probably be tranporting stuff between 0.0 and empire.
This new ship capable of interfacing freigthers as imo a good idea :)

Let us take an example. - The price of morphite has almost halfed. This should not be happening due to the increase in t2 production. However what has happened is that the prices came down due to Skiff's
But I can see a Capital miner do well, very well in fact, since atm nobody mines veld in 0.0 - we all just wait for the next hauler spawn! Why dont we think the reverse skiff idology, -i.e have a capital miner that can only mine low ends in 0.0, which, by their nature, will probebly never end up in empire anyway. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

I really wouldn't mind a massive "low cost ore" mining vessle. the skiff is an "expensive ore miner" but mines it at a decent rate. why not have a ship that can mine normal ore's at an alarming rate (like the hulk just better)... This would also help with production in 0.0 sec areas. Cause I meen cmon who really wants to mine veldspar/pyro/plag in 0.0 areas were you can mine crokite just as easy...

Indeed - A low sec/0.0 Capital Ship that can strip clean all those nasty veld roids are something that will enhance the market. They must strip at a rate that makes sense and to justify investment. Perhaps stripping at 10x the rate of standard hulks! After all, thats is on a par with what a hulk would get stripping crokite. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

Too true...I would love it to see a cool big new toy for miner/builder types. all the fighters are getting new cool bs's and bc's maybe after kali we can get a cool BIG mining ship something that looks scary and mines scary like. Heck If they made em I would get one and just sit there looking at it all chill like hulks get boring (and look just like a cov with dif paint and then you scream when you realize how long you have to mine to pay for it )

for me the basic problem with this debate is people's perceptions of cpital ships in general.
the mining community want a capital ship thats bigger and mines faster than anything currently in-game.
however if u actually look at capital ships they are very much role specific rather than just bigger versions of other combat ships.
if you were to make a mining/industrial capital ship it too would need to be very role specific and would probably not just be a way to mine faster. -

I would agree that it should be role specific...but is not a ship that can only mine fairly role specific? I do not want it to be a do everything/haul-everything ship. that would just not make sence. but a ship that can tear down normal ores would be a big benefit. The only issue I have is that if it can mine crokite and similar "nice expensive" minerals then all the other peole in the game will be outta luck. people who buy a hulk to own (and they do) crokite and similar minerals would be screaming. But if this ship was limited to velds/pyro/plag and maybe a couple other ore types would make it ok. -Don't you think?

What about a titan-like ship thats allowed in 0.0-0.4:
it should work like a smartbomb with an imploding effect sucking every bit of Ore into its cargohold(which is about 100 mil m3) and then refine the ores to minerals and makes it able to jump drive straight to Yulai/Jita/whatever..... this action would take about 15 hours, due to lag, and then an additional 2 minutes to jump/dock....
see.... that would be a ship that would make the game..... FOCKING BORING
on a more serious note:
make it like a slightly smaller sized Carrier (hey it dont the drone bay) and release some mining gang modules that let you: increase range on miners - Ore yield, which fits on this Mining-carrier. Special ability would be to make ores straight into Minerals (POS shall still be able to do it a bit better, this just makes the haulers skip going to the POS). dont give it any Turret slots.... (IE. no miners or Capital guns).
what about making it able to produce items? - not ships (omg omg we dont got space for ships inside this ship, even if its carrier sized)

Not a bad idea...but a bc can do gang assist mods atm...I would like to see a really cool ability besides refining. Maybe being able to haul at the same time... if its the size of a carrier (be that it is a small carrier) it should have alot of space inside. well what do you think?

Just give me bigger asteroids to mine! I get about 1 full cycle per strip miner before the roid pops. And then everyone complains about how all these belts are "stripped to death" because of us. i'll stay out of the capitol "mining" ship conversation, while I would enjoy a way to mass harvest low end ore it bothers me not. What I will talk about is this "refining" ship idea. There is no need for a special refining ship, just introduce a module that fits on indys and allows them to refine. Surely that is the original reason for them to have all that cpu anyway?
