Bad advice...no not really. I agree completely teamwork is fun. Going solo can be fun though too. Sometimes you're stuck solo always nice to be prepared.

I kinda disagree, I prefer to pirate solo than with others. 100% of the loot is then mine.
That being said where I live IS NOT solo lol, I defend my space with the locals.

Multiplayer doesnt mean you have to play in team though.
Ever played Unreal Tournament, Quake, or other online first person shooter? Deathmatch mode, a multiplayer game mode where every player plays on his own, but they are all playing in one arena. Multiplayer - yes, team play - no.

Edited by: Qutsemnie on 21/06/2006 08:31:12 This comes up in alot of games. ITs a common argument "I dont get why they play a MMOrpg and then dont want to play with other people!"
In other games though its usually related to two boxing or something.
And i dont buy it. And ive been making a list of reasons why people might play a mmorpg even though they dont like playing with other people.
1) No save. Almost every singe single player game released to date has had a save feature. Some games go crazy with it. Most people say "dont use save if you dont like it ruining your game". However, I think there is still a large player population [albeit a minority of total gamers] that react favorably to playing games they cant save in. In mmorpgs you do it and your stuck with the result. This makes everything even the most riskless venture much riskier then its single player counterpart. I think in WoW or Eve or EQ you see many players playing on a mmorpg simply to get the thrill of playing without a net. No save. They arnt neccesarily there to play with other people though.
2) A more direct sense of accomplishment exist in a collective online game. Theres no getting around it. Even if you play alone the whole time a mmorpg offers you a more visceral sense of progress then you would get playing the EXACT SAME GAME on a single player version. Theres something more compelling about being able to bump ships, compare e***** and share notes even if you dont play with anyone else directly.
3) MMORPGs are re-balanced quicker. A big turn off for some gamers is overpowering stuff. Oblivion was a real downer to a minority simply because of overpowered stuff. Expansion of baldurs gate 2 for example had some really broken character features. Some single player games (NWD) have a hard time tuning stuff because of license issues. Others just arnt interest in fixing things. MMORPGs fix things, balance things, retune things ASAP. I believe many people end up in MMORPGs simply to be in a game where developers care if magicspell01 is way to much pwn and makes the game way to easy.
4) MMORPGS often have a longer and deeper lifetime then singleplayer games. So combined with these other reasons often the MMORPG can be a more fulfilling diversion even in single player mode.
5) Often times two boxing feels like the right level of complication. For example in EQ I two box and it feels like "a better game" having two characters instead of one. Its just the right amount of button mashing. And often the challenge will be even more interesting alone but still playing online because of reasons 1,2,3 and 4. Ive fancied a game where everyone got two characters on two screens (logged in seperate if they please) for the same 15 dollars a month. You might think your loosing money but my theory is the "hook" of so much extra complication might make you more return on your investment. Alas though i admit that the least common denominator is why game characters are "about half the button mashing some people need". But besides that this ability to get a more interesting game experience then you might see in an oblivion by playing two characters at once is certainly attractive to some people.
6) Some gamers, and this is true even more in PvP games... some gamers only play with the same people they have always played with in online games. They like the small consistant feel of the same personalities theyve always cooperated with. They arnt interested in random goofballs. And they dont like a private game because of reasons 1 through 5 drawing them into a larger game.
What im trying to say is I think MMORPGs might unintentionally attract some players that they dont intend to attract simply because MMORPGs offer unique things that you dont see in single player games. And I think we all move through those reasons in varying degrees.

To the OP, not wanting to be rude, but fetch a dictionary please and lookup the word "multi". Multi = multiple = more then one/several. Multi combined with "player", doesn`t mean, nor has it ever ment: "team" "team-up" "group play". It just means: "several" "players", more then one player.
MMO: a(one) consistant universe/gameworld, with more then one player in it.

To the OP : EvE IS PvP, everything in EvE is - you're apparently speaking of the combat aspect of it. This, however, is just ONE part of the vast array of PvP options available in EvE. Mission-w***ing, trading, mining and manufacturing are a few others. Having fun in EvE means doing what you yourself consider to be entertaining. Some people find this to be what you have detailed, others consider amassing hoards of wealth to be the thing - still others enjoy different aspects of this rich, enthralling odyssey that is EvE.
If people want to play "solo", let them - we all know they're not REALLY playing solo

I think what should be said is that MMO = based on player interaction. You don't have to team up to be playing with others. When you play deathmatch in Quake 3 for example, you're playing with others. Fighting eachother, competing on the market and dealing with eachother IS playing with others.
You can fly solo as much as you want, but if all you do is run missions and nearly not have anything to do with other people, you're basically just redundant to the MMO part of the game. Solo pirating, solo trading, solo mining, it is all good because it will probably lead to player interaction (piracy truly is player interaction, it is the most intense and unique form due the emotions involve).
Being in a corp and talk to them alot nearly qualifies you as an MMO player, but you can try harder. In every sense, I see mission running as a complete waste since it doesn't contribute to anyone but a lone player. If missions were designed as a group experience, it'd surely qualify in my eyes. That's not the ways of today however.
Griefing is to ruin a friendly game, which Eve is not. |

dear god i had a nice reply but the forums gobbled it
The gist of it was, market transactions (trading with other players), chatting in corp chat/local, dodging the pirates after your booty etc etc, you dont need a white box or two next to you to make it multiplayer.

If you are mining alone, refining, then selling the mins, you ARE interacting with other people. If you go ratting or pirating then sell the loot, you are interacting with other people. Just because some people prefer to play solo, and a lot of people do, doesn't mean they aren't playing the game "right". To the OP....get a grip, play the game how you want, don't worry about how anyone else is, it's none of your business.
Like it or not, Eve is NOT all about combat based PVP, and most people don't want to be bothered with a PVP corp or alliance or 0 sec space at all. Face facts and go back to your gate camp.

As soon as you buy/sell something on the market you're interacting with other players...
There is not much you can do in this game without affecting someone else, so essentially even playing solo, you're still playing multiplayer...
I see no problem with it at all, the OP needs to stop *****ing about it...

QFT. I never really understood the kind of argument being made by the OP. If somone goes pirating 'solo', they aren't shooting at themselves, there are still other players involved. Same with the market as you stated. Even if you're running solo missions, it stands to reason you are going to buy or sell something in the player based market.
Playing with others doesn't necessarily mean fighting with others.

MMO means multiple people on the same server.
NOT Multiple people on the same server grouping up for the common good.

No.

To the OP: play the game your own way and dont tell others what they should be doing. Just because its a MMO doesnt give you the right to give other people instructions on what to do.

More importantly than all the other good points here...
This is a game that each person pays cold hard cash to play.
Therefore they and I can and will play the game any way we feel like, solo or otherwise.
You play the way you want, and we'll play the way we want.
