America online
its like one of the worlds largest internet providers and is owned by time warner who also own CNN and 95% of atlanta. (other 5% is owned by arthur blatt btw)
It is funny to see AOL is also pretty big in the UK too
oh yeah and it was one of the original major providers way back in the 90s --------------- RIP - Smoske, My Friend

lol. Glad that if you're lucky enough to get through to Irish women you've pretty much got want you want right there. Rang them uop the other day, expecting to speak to someone I couldn't understand, I sure was shocked.
But, tbh, thats just one individual working in a very large company trying to help him figure out how to keep his account. -------------------------------------------

Meh.
Ring up, press whatever button for "cancel account," you get through to someone straight away (they WANT to talk to you if you're considering cancelling).
Give name and account details, state that you are cancelling the account as of tomorrow, hang up, cancel the direct debit payments.
Job done. ________________________________________________

Had the misfortune to try AOL several years back (my dad insisted on using their free trial CDs). E-mailed them to cancel the account only to find that they billed us for it the following month.
Then had to ring up and spent several minutes establishing that they had "never received" an e-mail from us asking for the account to be cancelled and that they would only refund us half the amount they took for that month. On top of that they kept asking if we'd like X hours free so we could test the service some more
Removing the software I found that it left behind a dialler icon for AOL named something like "DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE - IMPORTANT!"
Horrible ISP.

AOL is a laughing stock among ISPs to be honest.

Hence, cancel the payments. Most companies will do this, because they're breaking no law; it's up to you to notice the error and ring the bank to get it fixed. ________________________________________________

This sounds like Greece of today (just replace AOL and BT with OTE)
Just go to the greek DSL community forum and you will see tons upon tons of posts EXACTLY like that
ISP throws the ball to OTE (the telephone company) and OTE throws it to the ISP. When they are done throwing the responsibility to each other they accuse the customer of not knowing what he is doing _____________________________

Edited by: Herbaceous on 24/06/2006 20:53:56 Fashionable though it seems to be to hate/ridicule AOL and their service, I've yet to have a problem with them in the UK.
In the years I've had my broadband account with AOL I have never failed to be online when I need to be (i.e. zero down time). This may mean that I've missed out on the whole customer service problem that so many people seem to cite, I suppose, but I'll settle for a rock-solid connection over a sweet voice on the end of the phone every time, thank you :P
My connection speed (originally 512) has been steadily increased several times- at no extra charge - and now operates between 3.5 and 4.5 meg down and 400k up.
I don't use their software: my router logs in using a screenname and password, so I don't have to suffer that appalling browser and the myriad of little 'helper' apps that they seemed to be so keen on back in the old days (do they still do that?)
So, as you might imagine, I have no great problem with them...
Sorry, I know it was a little off-topic, but I just thought I'd speak up for them since I've seen them getting panned all over the Internet for years

heh, well the discussion here is over their customer service and the difficulty with them. your comments are inapplicable to this discussion. no offence.
AOL is like chevrolet.. you can go anywhere in the world and drive a chevy. does that make it a good vehicle? of course not, it just strengths the fact that no matter where you go....if you cant find anthing else.. you'll find ****.
