Have done the tutorial and read lots of the forum... still have a Q...
If I right click a red cross (or in list on right of screen) it allows me to see info on ship but does not tell me how powerful it is. How do I know I am not taking on something more powerful by far?
Are all red crosses npc's?
Player pirates - how does one spot them?
Thks :-) Great game

the red crosses are npc ships. it does shows u how much of a threat they are. the last sentence will be something like threat level: low or threat level: nominal. depends from mission to mission.

Another trick that I use is to look at the bounty on the ship. Generally higher bounties mean tougher ships.

Edited by: Drizit on 24/06/2006 15:08:21 I actually thought this compared it to your current ship when I first saw it but it's not the case. I depends on your skills (and combat ability) as to how threatening it really is as I found out.
When I first saw "Threat level: Extreme" I almost ran for it but soon found out that even a cruiser can pop it with not too much trouble and a bit of careful tactics, not to mention a fairly good setup.
In most cases, I ignore that now. I guess it really only applies to noobs with no skills or experience at all.
You can get high threat levels on NPC ships in 0.3 but a well set up Punisher frigate can take them on with not too much problem.

A really small cross will be a frigate. A large cross that's thin is a cruiser or a battle cruiser (AFAIK) and a big fat red cross is a battleship.
That's what I've worked out so far, anyway.

Big fat red crosses can also be harmless npc haulers. ~ |

Between the size of the cross and the bounty you can generally get a decent idea of how strong a ship is. However, Eve being a complex game, that doesn't give you the full story. Some ships may run-and-gun with missiles and arty and be invincible vs. a slow ship. Some high-bounty cruisers will be crippled if you get in close and orbit, and some frigates may do the same to you.
My advice is to charge like a madman no matter the odds! Then, if it turns ugly, run the h**l away. :) You'll start remembering the names of ships, and remembering how difficult they are.

As a newer player myself, I found that by looking at the bounties on npc rats, I was able to determine if I could handle them or not. When I first started out, I could handle bounties around 1-2k, then when I could handle them, I kept moving to lower security systems and trying out 3-5k bounty rats. I'm now able to take on 12-15k bounty rats but they are a lot tougher, and if I'm not careful, they can really put a hurt on me.

If it blows you up then it was too powerful.
Sorry couldn't resist.

This is well sayed Hint how to instantly refil your cap and shields. Get insta to dock and if your shields are down warp to station enter it(dock) and undock. Good to go, shields up cap full

I don't think it compares it to anything signifigant.
Bloods in impariors are low threat, but somehow DARK bloods in impariors are deadly

Linkage
THis is the NPC database, gives all NPC ships strengths and weakness. Pretty useful.
