Who's buying ore and why? I'm sure it's not as simple as people who have high refining skills and can just flip for mineral profit.
And weren't there refining changes for highsec recently? I would really appreciate it if someone could shine some light on the matter. |

High-sec and null-sec Industrialists buy the Ore, newbs & their respective corps mine it, and it bares virtually no profit to "flip" ores, even with perfect refining skills, as the market value roughly reflects the refined value of the ore's contents. I have purchased large volumes of ore in the past to replace mineral stockpiles that were used up in manufacturing. When you live further out (like my backwater system), ore seems easier to acquire in bulk than minerals. That is probably due to the fact that regular miners like to make their home in quiet systems, sometimes far from hubs.
Rather than reprocess their ore at a potential loss (if they have crappy refining skills) or have to haul anything to the hub, they can sell it to a reasonably-priced buy order. Manufacturers win when this happens, too, because they do not have to travel to Jita or another hub to restock their minerals.
Some other things to consider: There are specialized ships capable of holding huge amounts of ore. See the Miasmos.
If someone regularly uses an Orca to haul things in highsec, they might make use of the ore bay at the same time.
You can also find a lot of info on the upcoming changes to ore reprocessing and compression here: Reprocess all the things! Starbase changes for Crius (including changes to POS ore refining & compression)
I prefer buying ore in my home system over buying minerals from a hub, because it helps support the goal of spreading out the EVE economy and makes the formation of new hubs slightly more possible.
Edit: Oh, I totally forgot to mention the cottage industry of selling mission ores at career agent stations. People will pay a hefty markup to swiftly complete their "War Materials" faction missions. There is profit to be made with perfect refining if you buy outside the trade hubs where miners are selling to avoid transport. Of course you make nearly as hauling the runrefined ore to trade hub and selling it. Former forum cheerleader CCP, now just a grumpy small portion of the community. |

The time to profit to energy expended ratio is horrendous, then again you're speaking to someone that trades the market like it's a stock market. Are you a market trader? Do you want to chat with other traders? Then join my ingame chat channel: VonBel Trading |

I buy Ore when I can't get enough minerals. If I have both mineral buy orders up and Ore buy orders up I can get twice as much things in the same amount of time. |
