Well first there was Castor, then Exodus, then Cold War, then Red Moon Rising, then Blood. And soon, Kali.

http://www.eve-online.com/features/
2003 - Release 2003 - Castor 2004 - Exodus 2005 - Cold War 2005 - Red Moon Rising 2006 - Kali (Sep > sometime in '07)
Click on each of them on the link above to see what was added. CCP releases new expansions approximately every 6 months. Each expansion normally contains a bunch of new ships, new modules, and a few new gaming concepts.
Bear in mind too, that each of these expansions have been free (as in beer). Not $19.95 like other games.

Yup. Expansions aren't really expansions - they're compulsory, free client upgrades. The game evolves and takes you with it, rather than requiring you to shell out cash for optional extras.

I am honestly suprised more people dont play this game. It really is a incredible game. My only complaint is that I am used to grinding levels, and I cant do it heh. So it is a little slow leveling up. But great game, and the free added content is always nice =D

no, they are expansions. they are worthy of calling them such.
in fact they are what expansions in a MMO,... persistent state virtual world, that is... should be.
honestly if your expansion CAN be optional, something has gone wrong, and the whole affair is reduced to one bolted on hodge podge peice of crap after another.
look how much more signifigant, and how much more meaningful the expansions can be, when approached like EVE's are, isnt' that wholely better in every way, over whats become the standard?

Yeah... compulsory expansions
Look at Ultima Online back in the '90's. Whilst you didn't have to buy the expansion, you were expected to. Later off-the-shelf versions of the game included the expansions as part of the package. What resulted was a completely disjointed game, whereby people weren't allowed through certain chokepoints to other areas of the game, denying them the more advanced equipment.

Actually there aren't any expansions, just real life catches up with how it is in Oveur's head... __________________________________________
