As all(?) the above setups are missile based I thought I'd just post my rail setup. Yes, I know all the arguments about passive tank setup, but to be honest for level 3 missions you don't actually need all those shields. So... my setup
5 x 250mm rails (compressed coils are good 'bang for buck') load outs AM / iridium 2 x assault launchers (loaded with rat-specific ammo)
1 x large regolith extender 1 x invul shield hardener (named or T2) 1 x rat-specific hardener vs primary damage type (if required) 1 x tracking computer 1 x fleeting webber / PWNAGE targer painter
2 x PDU II 1 x mag field stab II 1 x tracking enhancer II / gravimetric backup cluster (for gurista swarms)
2 med and 1 small drone (currently only have drones level 3 so can only have 3 in space).
Play around with the config for different missions - for angel extravaganza (even the new 'harder' version) I find I only need the invul shield so I can equip both the webber and painter.
I find that with BC skill at 4 and 2 PDU II's I don't need to boost shields in missions - the recharge rate is decent and on multi-level missions there is ample time for the shields to recharge while you amble slowly towards the next gate because the ferox is so slow ;)
The only mission I need to increase shield resists for is the 'Downing the Slavers pt 2' mission, where I equip active EM and thermal resists and an extra passive EM shield and a damage control mod.

ive been doing lvl3s for a while now and have 2.6m sp of which only 500k is in fighting skills the rest in learning
I use 5 heavys and 2 280mm carbide howitzers 3 large shield extenders named and 2 racial hardeners 4 shield power relays 3 drones as its all i can use
This setup can tank any lvl3 as long as u dont aggro everything in sight at once, the howitzers drones and missiles kill quite quick vs frigs and the heavys kill crusers and bc's pretty quick 2, works very well for me yet to get down to 40% shields with this, but make sure u read eve-info missions, and on massive attack use thermal attacks not em, they work better, hope that helps :)

Hi--5 Arbalest hvy Launcher+1 med smart bomb+1 Tractor Beam
Med--3 L.Shield extender+1 AB(120%)+1 Invul. Field
Low--1 Damage control II+1 PDS+1 Balisk control+1 cap battery
I'm also looking for improvments:), I can run most lvl 3 mission solo, but hate those small frigs, looking for ideas for those too:) (like Angel Viper in Angel Extra.)

Pretty standard setup for me, i have tried the railgun setup..but dont have the gunnery skills to be effective.
High: 5 x T1 heavies (rat specific loads) 1 X 125 rail 1 x tractor beam
Mids: 3 x large shield extenders (8723 hp) 2 x rat specific hardeners
low: 2 x BCS 1 x emergency damage control 1 x PDS
Drones: 2 x med 1 x light
for part 2 of rogue slave trader i swap out a hardener for an AB, and 1 bcs for an armor rep (still experimenting on this one).

Ok Newbie Question how do the "smart bombs" work? I noticed some used a set up using a smart bomb on the sixth heavey slot.
Is there a smart bomb laucher or do you just drop em in.

Smartbombs are weapons, not 'ammo' (as in the old defender arcade game) - it's like an energy pulse that radiates out to the weapon's range. You can keep using it as long as you have the cap to support it (and on a passive tank setup you should have plenty of cap to spare).
One caveat though - it's not a good idea to use these weapons anywhere they might damage another player's ship (or Concord / faction police ships) in hi-sec systems as they're indiscriminate weapons.

Mid: 1 large shield booster 4 rat specific hardners (if the rat only does one kind of damage take two of the hardners off and add large shield extenders)
Low: 2 BCU II 2 cap power relay
I have been crusing threw level 3s, even the angel extraganze, black market hub.

Originally by: Cromwell Brisbane Lots of great info.
But I have one more question. I notice several people say use "Rat Specific Hardeners"
How can you tell what Hardener is best for which rat? And for that matter what ammo is best since I was also told to load up my ammo for specic rat types.
Is there an online sheet somewhere that shows best hardeners/ammo/etc is best for which rat type???
Any info on this would be great.

Check EVE-Info L3 Database it lists what damage type rats so you you know which hardeners to use as well as what type of ammo you should use. Fitting properly for the type of rat helps you stay alive longer and kill the rats faster.

2 Large shield extender II 1 Medium shield booster II 1 10MN Afterburner II 1 Invuln Field
low:
2 Power Diagnostic II 1 named grid upgrade (10%) 1 named Damage Control
Shields for me are a bit above 10k with the above gear, enough to make using the booster at all damned rare. This build is strong enough that I don't need a WCS even on the toughest missions with scramblers.
i thought i had decent skills (circa 7Mil) and run the bog standard 5 heavies (any will do for lvl 3's) & 2 tractors, i don't need the damage output from a pair of rails anymore. mids are 3 T2 Extenders + 2 T2 Rat Specific Hardeners. Lows are 2 T2 BCU and 2 SPR's. TBH it's easy mode in lvl 3's waiting for skills for nighthawk as my Raven bores me. how the hell are you geting over 10K HP with only 2 extenders

(3125+4200)*1.05¦*1.25 = 10094 Shields
3125 - Ferox Shields 4200 - 2x T2 Large Extender 1.05¦ - 2x PDU II 1.25 - Shield Management 5
- drop that AB and put another Extender on your Ferox for about 30% more protection (12988 shields)

No way, Ferox speed makes baby Jesus cry. Besides, more shield basically isn't necessary; I even use an invuln instead of a hardener because... wait for it... I'm too lazy to refit.
Tangential note: when checking eveinfo.com and other sites for a look-ahead to difficult missions, Watch Out! Certain mission overviews have not been updated to reflect the recent difficulty-upgrade patch - Pirate Invasion for certain is not updated (despite being marked 'unchanged') and there are a couple others as well.
If you see a lvl3 with a ton of reward/bonus and LP, and eveinfo.com shows no destroyers or battlecruisers, only frigates and cruisers, Be Careful, you could be facing more dps than you're expecting.

Man I see a lot of people posting with nothing but heavies...How do you hit anything when you get swarmed by those pesky small rats that hover at 5000-7500 M and web you like crazy? Even with a good AB I only get my Ferox to 330 M/s...anyways I have been runnng level 3 missions for a while now and here is what I run:
Hi's 2 heavies (Best you can afford) 2 Assaults (Again Best you can afford) 2 250MM Rails (Need I say Ditto) Tractor
Mids 2 large extenders AB 2 Rat Specific Hardners
Low's 2 PDS's BCU Mag Stabilizer Sometimes I'll swap in to shield boost amps in the lows if its a humdinger of a mission...(Extravagana's)
Anyway it tends to work well for me. I'll just warp in and punch the afterburners away from the group of rats, hit with heavies and rails and save the assault launchers for whatever comes in range.

My setup:
3x 250 carbide rails 4x heavy launchers 1x large shield extender I 2x large shield extender II 2x passive hardeners (preferably named, and rat-specific) 2x PDS I 2x shield power relay
This needs high skills (I have advanced weapon upgrades 4, for example) but the idea is to reduce the incoming DPS, and increase the shield recharge enough that you don't have to worry about it.
Shields are 11k or so, and the worst of missions (I have angel extravaganza in mind) don't even dent my tank. I suspect this setup could survive a level 4, but I'd never be able to kill the BS in one.
The cases where I have used tech I stuff instead of tech II are basically due to fitting problems; for example a PDS II goes over on CPU. This is also the reason why I use carbide rails. Maybe, if I fitted malkuth heavies, more tech II stuff would fit.
Anotherf point worth mentioning; this setup needs no attention, so if the doorbell rings or something you keep your ship. ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." ---------------------------------------------- |

Yes you can, you get 25m3 = 5x Light Drones.
I always use 4 drones (all my skills allow so far), but I often forget to add the drones when I post fittings, I guess I just assume people know I use drones

Use 5x Light Drones to deal with the frigates. Also, if you train Guided Missile Precision to 4, your heavy missiles will be reasonably effective against frigates.
