What was EVE's biggest lesson for you? I'll give mine here.. but i'm just as curious what others have learned from it.
My lesson:
Everything is relative I must admit it was not only EVE, but since in EVE you have the opportunity to watch all kind of different group structures and ideologoes pit against eachother, you can see it very well here.
Ever thought about why we are all waging wars as humans? I mean.. surely there can't be countries full of 'evil' people. Well, you are right.. there are no such countries or nations, as there is no such thing as good or evil.
These are but terms used by us to describe things either favorable to us, or things that have a negative impact from our perspective.
As we are all selfish by nature, we rarely think about things from a different perspective than our own. In fact, we most of the time fail to do so, even if we try, as our lacking experiences make it impossible to imagine the motives of someone else.
Thats when we classify our opponents as evil, call them all kind of names, and look down on them for being inferior in all aspects.
Let's stop here for a moment.
Why not pretend, that our opponents are just like we are? That they have their own motivations and principles which sound completely logical to them. Going further, what if they just fail to see our perspective, making THEM think that we are evil bastards?
Another step down the road comes the question: who am i, to judge who is right and who is wrong? How can i tell, that it is me being righteous, and not him? If i can't understand his motives or principles, then how can i tell that his goals are inferior to mine?
My favorite example of this is me being in FA fighting against IMP, then some months later we end up on the same side. It was odd to see the people i hated so much for being my enemies from the other side of the fence. Maybe it takes an experience like this for some to realize, that the same people are playing on both sides.
Thinking back i can see nothing wrong in their actions. They were merely protecting their interests, even though at the cost of mine at that time.

Is it evil to kill? Is it moral? What if by killing some one you save hundreds? Thousands? Is it immoral to allow someone to die by inaction? Is it immoral to steal if you only take what you need to survive?
Please. The world is not as black and white as you wish it were. And Neither is EVE.

That morality is subjective, yet usually determined by the sword rather than the pen.
Yet also the thin line between the conception of good and evil, honour and dishonour.
And oh yeah, that if a interceptor was to fly past you horizontaly you wouldn't be able to register it in your mind. Many years ago I watched a documentay on Meerkats. At one point a Meerkat got seperated from the pack and the narrator noted the difficulties it now faced; if it foraged for food, it could no longer watch for predators, but if it watched for predators, it couldn't eat.
"You could say," intoned the narrator, "that a lone meerkat is a dead meerkat."
EVE says the same thing about people.

csebal, you've actually described a big problem I have with life in general. Everything is subjective and relative... even truth itself, therefore I can both never know, and always know truth at the same time. Yet how could that be true, if truth itself is relative. See what I mean?
On a side note, you might like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance if you haven't read it.

What is truth? It is just another term we created to make thinking easier for our rather limited minds. Calling something truth implies that it is right in some way. But since right is just a matter of perspective, the term truth can also only be used in a subjective context.
With that said, you can never know truth, just that you believe something to be true. My post does not represent the general or official opinion of anyone else besides me. No matter what YOU believe. Rest.In.Peace HUN |
