Edited by: Insan Ity on 29/06/2006 22:57:29 So... the Invuln I shield hardener has a passive bonus to all resists of 1% listed.
When I fit it... these go away leaving only a 3% bonus to those damage types which I have the shield compensation skills for (so I have EM compensation I, so I get a 3% bonus to passive resists).
This seems bugged...
Anyone else notice weirdness with shield compensation skills?

I don't understand the question. This seems to be exactly the correct behavior. Your passive resist bonus on active hardeners is only 1% per level.

The Invulnerability Field is an Active hardner. So it gives a 1% resistance bonus when in the inactive state which is effected by the Compensation Skills. When you activate the Hardner (so its using capacitor) it gives the other resistance amount that is in the attributes. However when the hardner is active it does not gain any benifits from the Compensation Skills.
Compensation Skills work best with Passive modules though in all truth unless your short on energy the Active ones will always be better.

That's not true. A named passive hardener (30%) with your compensations skills at 5 will give you 55% total (versus 50% with an active). I'm not sure how it works with shields, but I know the armor 30% hardeners are dirt cheap (like 1-3mil per).
And there are nice benefits to using passive modules. They are easier to fit and they don't use cap. That means your tank still works when you get NOS'ed.

Actually, it shouldn't give you 55% passive, as the 5% resistance bonus per level with the compensation skills is 5% of the base percentage, not a flat 5% added on top.
So essentially, at lvl 5 your passive shield hardener is as effective as 1.25 passive shield hardeners would be.

I was taking into account T2 actives that do 55% resist. And the Invulnerability field he was talking about as there is no passive version of that for shields.
As for lvl Compensation skills to lvl 5... I have other things that i am more worried about than that. But i have used passives to supliment my Actives in some cases. Really depends on the ship and how i am tanking.
EDIT: what pervious poster said. I think i saw in another thread somewhere that the best you could get (without uber faction loot) is like 47% resist off a passive harnder anyway.

Really? ...just opened Excel and did some math alongside Quickfit and it seems you're right. How lame. Does armor compensation work the same way?

Yes it does. Armor is just the armor version of shield compensation. Though I dono what resists you can get because I really suck at armor tanking :P Compensation Skills only work on Non-Activation hardners in general.

Trying again...
Situation 1: I have no shield compensation skills (Nothing in Thermic, EM, Explosive, or Kinetic).
Invuln Field I -> Show Info
Passive resist Kinetic: 1% Passive resist Explosive: 1% Passive resist EM: 1% Passive resist Thermic: 1%
Fine.
Situation 2: I learn Thermic Shield Compensation I. I still have NO EM, Kinetic, or Explosive Compensation skills...
Invuln Field I -> Show Info
Passive resist Thermic: 3%
That's it.
Show Info shows all of the other 1% bonuses to the Invuln Field as vanished, gone, kapooof.
Is this a bug? Or am I missing something?

That might be a bug... Maybe report it and see what CCP says...
As a test maybe train another Compensation skill to lvl 1 and see what happens.
