for the ecm burst devices, do they work reguardless of whether your opponent already has a lock on you? for example if he has not locked you yet does it prevent him and if he has locked you does it break the lock.
also, does anyone know the calculation for the chance of ecm actually occuring. i am asking cause i am considering getting the drones that have ecm but the strongest drone only has a jamming strength of something like 2 so i was wondering if it would have any chance of effecting ships like battleships and stronger.

ECM Burst modules work on all ships within the area of effect (5km base).
Locking is not important to whether an ECM burst works or not.
Probability of a sucessful jam is the jamming strength divided by the target's sensor strength. Taking the Raven as an example: 2 / 22 = 9% chance of a sucessful jam.
That's per cycle, so the chance of at least 1 successful jam over 2 cycles would be nearly 17%.

thanks, does that calculation apply to all devices that jam various parts of the opponent?

Yes, the calculation applies to all ECM jamming effect.
However 'normal' ECM modules require a lock on the target first. On the plus side, normal ECM doesn't get you concorded in safe space. The information where ECM cannot disrupt a lock already on you is either incorrect or outdated.

You do get flagged for jamming...

so do ecm bursts and electronic counter measures have the same effect? making your opponent unable to get a lock on you just bursts effect everyone near you and dont require you to be locked on them and electronic counter measures require a lock but have a longer range?

Yes but you require a lock then activate the module for normal ECM.
ECM bursts are just activate the module, which combined with its AoE, is far more likely to hit a 'friendly' or neutral target, resulting in you being concorded.
I think what I meant to say is that ECM bursts are more likely to get you concorded.
To Scythe: yes, ECM bursts and 'normal' ECM have the same effect, just different ranges and target number. I'm not 100% sure whether ECM bursts jam you for a period of time like normal ECM.

Exactly.
ECM burst = small area of effect around you, friends and foes alike (yes, you render your allies unable to shot at the enemy). You dont need a lock to activate.
Targeted ECM = single-target long-range (35 km base range).
If you cause an ECM effect on a ship that you do not have attack rights on in high-sec, Concord will kill you (so stay away from ECM bursts in high-sec).

How about low sec space? If you activate an ecm burst near a gate/station or similar? From what I understand, in worst case you can get sentries on you, if you accidentally hit an "innocent". But can you "hit" gates and stations too, and get the same unpleasant effect?

yes the sentries will see it as act of aggression and open fire on you. Only difference is, you won't see concord. And remember sentry guns in low sec can be tanked!

I wouldn't use burst ECM tho, they're just not effective. Fit multispectrals or racials imo ----------------- Death smiles at us all, all a man can do is smile back.

Okay I just wanna make sure I got this all straight, so please corrent me if I'm wrong (or feel free to praise my brilliant radiance if I'm right )
1. If for example my effective ECM strength is 4 and they're effective sensor strength is 10 then I have a 40% chance to jam them (4/10). Multiple ECM systems don't stack to increase my chances but rather give me multiple chances to jam. (using the same example if I had two ECMs I wouldnt have an 80% chance to jam, rather two chances at 40% each)
2. Regular ECM systems can only be used against a single target, and only if I have them targeted first.
3. ECM Bursts have the same effects, but affect ALL targets within range, not just a single target but are weaker and have shorter ranges to compensate.
4. If I successfully ECM jam someone, they lose any current target locks and can't try to retarget for a short period.
5. As far as CONCORD and high-security space is concerned, using ECM on someone is just like shooting at them (in other words if I ECM some random person for no reason CONCORD will kill me as if I had fired off a missile)
I didn't become Evil incarnate by choice...oh wait, yes I did... |

No,
And yes to all your questions, Aurore. Though you can attempt to jam multiple targets with multiple ECMs if you have them targeted.

First off, thread necromancy is bad.

Further to F'nog's answer, technically yes, you have two 40% chances of jamming the target.
From a expectation probability perspective however, you actually have:
1 - (0.6 * 0.6) = 66% of at least 1 successful jam.
Bear in mind that the random number generator is apparently a little bit flakey and you might find yourself jamming a little more often than that.

Not sure if it's mentioned (bit busy atm) but normal ECM will have the target jammed for the full cycle. Burst ECM JUST breaks the lock, they can instantly retarget you afterwards (which then takes a certain amount of time taking the normal signature radius and resolution into account).
So there's a big difference between the 2 types.
