Just this weekend I got conned out of 9 mill isk on an insta purchase that went sour.
How do deal with a player that agrees to sell you an insta set, place it into escrow for you but doesn't actually give you the goods you have paid for?
The transaction was such that the 570 instas (BM's) would be in the hold of a shuttle labled "Heimatar Instas". On viewing the merchndise in escrow before paying I could see that the shuttle was there, but clearly could not see inside. So, I duly paid the 9 mil, claimed my escrow and opened the shuttle hold to find nothing?????
Now.... I feel kinda stupid being fooled like that... but how do you guard acainst it? How do you respond.... especially when the other player will not enter into a diplomatic convo, or answer any eve-mails?
Some advice would be nice.....
However a word of warning to all... do not enter into trade with "BM Moe", he will rip you off.

these kind of scams are so lame. Ok as a general rule whenever buying from escrow always make sure to ask for all items to be repackaged. a. they show their true name not what they have been named, b. anything in it's cargo hold appears in the window. Oh and c. never buy instas from someone you don't know. 99% of them are scams as there is no way of proving how good the BM's are before buying.

Escrow lists every individual item, all equiped mods, ammo and cargo are unequiped and added to the list, so if you only see a shuttle, that's all there is. Call it a lesson in life, at nine mil that's actually pretty cheap.

One point always try and use a BM seller that is known and recomended you may have to pay alittle more for the BM's but least you know they work and they will be complete.

Well before you said he was ignoring your eve-mails, i would have said it was BM lag. I've put BM's in cans only to find they're empty... or so it seems, i actually had to wait 5 minutes or so for them to load.
But since he's ignoring you, it does look like you've been scammed. _____________________________________________/ *Here comes the Thnikkaman!*

In the future you should use a reputable BM dealer like the Red Frog BookMark Team: Our IGB ordering site

/signed, PostPatchBM or PostPatch BM (forgot the exact spelling) and BM Manager are reliable, you can also look up BM sellings in Eve-search.com, it's always good to check out which ones actually have recommondation bumps from customers.

It's not lame. A good scam as seen from the point of view of a scammer, is a scam that works. This one clearly does and gets a hearty thumbs up from tiller

Are you sure you waited for them to load? It could take as much as 20 minutes for all those to display.

Such scams are the ULTIMATE risk free form of Eve for the scammer. Even worse, much worse, is that it is risk free screwing with other players. The ultimate possible lameness in Eve.
I don't much mind risk free NPC interaction for empire carebears (and I live in deep 0.0).
But if you screw with other players, CCP should go aggressively out of their way to insure that either you face "actual" risk, or your lame playing style is severely nerfed, to the point of ruin.
Risk free playing styles that include harrassing other players do NOT deserve to exist.
And yes, I'm well aware that 'some' folks scam with their mains. Thats different. But only an idiot would state that and ignore that MANY scammers do not scam with their mains.
The challenge for CCP is to make it as easy as ever for a scammer to use his main, but brutally and deliberately and completely RUIN the game for alt scammers.

And how would you do that Serg because im not seeing a viable way. Hows about making things less complicated and using your common sense. 10 million isnt much of a loss thats just over cruiser price and i consider most ships written off the moment i use them. I dont trust anyone, although theres tell tail signs of it being an alt scammer (some i quite creative) iv never used more than 4 mil to prove it and if they want to lose their credability over 4 mil then thats really their loss.

10mil isk is chump change
as for "how"? Good question. The only reason I'm not pressing for a change is that there is currently no suggested viable "fix". ("pressing" is different for "mentioning". Actual "pressing" would not merely be a forum post (although might start with one)).
You'd be surprised how many folks think: "Not explicitely forbiddin by CCP, therefore 100% OK". Log in traps fall into the same catagory, except are not nearly as lame, as there is at least a possibility of risk. Heck, Log on traps are down right honorable play by comparison.
Edit: Another type of lameness that is honorable when compared to alt escrow scamming: Linkage

Indeed. And since the 'victim' would have prolly used the instas to avoid combat, two thumbs up.

When you put a ship on escrow with something in it's cargo, you will see the ship and the cargo separately when inspecting the escrow.
This means that if there where 570 instas in that shuttle, you would see the shuttle and the 570 instas. So this scam could have been easily avoided.

Wouldn't sell insta-undock BMs etc. on escrow anyways. How could I tell that the camper has no one at my undock point waiting for me. =================================

Was he online at all? I ask because items drop out of escrow after 7 days. So there is no need to log that alt in in the meanwhile.

To answer the many questions on how long I waited before deciding that there was nothing there. I waited 50 minutes, and repeated the process 7 times, starting with 15 min and eventually reaching a 50 min wait.
I also kept looking at the little loading icon in the top-right corner (the little 'o' that spins, the volume bar and the items counter at the top left corner. The loading icon stopped spinning after 5 seconds, the volume bar went from half full on openening to empty after 5 sec and the item counter gad [0] in it.
So it was clewar to me that there was nothing in it. Waiting the 50 min was down to the there bein 400 peeps in local and I figured that might slow things down.
As far as the quality of the BM's... I only wanted gate - gate instas as I was heading down to Heimatar to do missions and could in the process tidy them up if needed.
My apologies for replying to yuor questions so late, and thank you all for good advice.
