So I just had an amazingly frustrating experience.... The noob mission series I got after doing the tutorial stuff included "Small Arms" as the reward for a couple of the steps... but these are apparently contraband. Flying around with these in my ship got them confiscated, but on top of that got me a fine that cost me pretty much every dime I made doing the mission, about 3 times what my ship cost.
Ok, fine, that's a perfectly reasonable game mechanic... but how the hell is a new player supposed to know this stuff? It wasn't in the tutorial or any of the web pages I read, and the stuff was a reward from one of the noob missions....! It's pretty bad design, if you ask me.
I've only had the trial for a couple of days, but I have to say there's a lot of things in this game that are really unclear to a new player, and they aren't well covered in the tutorial. I'm not a hardcore player, if I continue playing it's going to be strictly casual, and I don't really feel like playing for weeks just to learn what I need to know to start over with a new character that won't get f****d up.
Is there a FAQ that covers this stuff?

You should have gotten a warning when undocking with contraband that said it WAS contraband (at least I always do)

Bram giving out Small Arms is a filter to get people who don't read item descriptions to quit the game.

That isn't reasonable. There are hundreds of items... but to begin with there is a warning message, so...

Item description: "Personal weapons and armaments, used both for warfare and personal security."
There is no skull on the item when you pick them up in a Gallente station. There is no warning when leaving a Gallente station with them in your hold - I just checked. Apparently they're legal here. But you get them shortly before being sent to Caldari space where they are illegal.
Not that I'm surprised by the replies...

Ahhh... I see what you mean. You undocked where they were legal and went where they were illegal.
Just ask around... you can probably get someone to give you some ISK to cover the fine. Its not really a big deal.

And actually the agent DOES tell you that the operation you will do is illegal and if you are really up to it... So read the agent text....

90% of the game isn't covered in the tutorial, nor in the sparse user manual. The game is probably one of the most complex ever made and takes plenty of time to both fully appreciate and understand, for better and for worse...
If you need any help while playing you're welcome to eveMail me, and remember that EVE (at least from most peoples perspective) is a social game that encourages to co-work.
Join a corp, abd drop me a line when needed.
+ Good luck & welcome to EVE, you'll either love it or flee in panic ;)

Sucks to be a noob? Ok... Tbh, I wish I could erase all my EVE memories and start over. The game was so much more fun when I was a noob. I never read the guides/faq's and god I miss all those "wtf" and "wow" moments, all the laffs we had when I was blowing up one thrasher per day trying out missions and stuff like that.
But then again the major part in all my fun is due to a friend who hooked me up with EVE, gave me some starting isk and let me annoy the bejesus out of him with all the questions.

It doesnt suck to be a newb.
That said, it isnt the best idea to have contraband handed out in newbie missions, but those are no different than normal missions afaik, so thats why.
Yes, you can play EVE casual. However you have to do some planning, reading the items descritions etc. You wont learn everything in the tutorial, the game wont hold your hand, you have to read yourself. You wont be flying your space ship non-stop, blowing stuff up. If you enjoy the planning part it shouldnt be a problem - its not rocket science.
