When I bring up the Fittings window in the Station, on my Brutix, the small sub-window in the lower right corner shows:
EM: 60%
Explosive: 10%
Kenetic: 35%
Thermal: 35%
When I add named specific hardners, it doesn't seem to impact those numbers much. For example, adding an N-Type Thermic Hardner I, which should add 50% bonus to Thermal resistance, increases the Thermal guage from 35% to 36%. Am I interpreting the guage in the fittings window incorrectly?

the resistance hardener affects the unresisted part of your armor.
adding a 50% to em will be 60+ (50% of 40)= 80.
active hardeners add a passive amount when not activated, so to check your resists, undock, activate module and then show info and look at ships attributes.

That is because you fitted an active hardner. These little modules only add their resistance when they are activated and recently have had a +1% when inactive. That is why it goes up from 35% to 36%.
Also before you come back and complain why your thermal didn't go up from 35% to 85%, I'll explain a bit more about stacking hardners. They say they add 50% (in this case active), that means they add 50% of the 65% left (also in this case). This means your end result in thermal resistance when you activate the hardner will be 35% + 65%/2 = 67.5%. You can check this number when outside and have activated the hardner by selecting your ship, right click and choose show info.

Welcome to EVE - I hope you enjoy yourself. I think the issue here is that you have added active hardners. They impart a (tiny) bonus to your base armour resistance but the full 50% bonus will be added when the hardners are active.
To check, undock and and hit the hardeners. Wait a few seconds, right-click on your ship, 'show info', select the attribute tab and one should see the increase in the appropriate resistance.
