I should begin by saying I want very much to like this game. It came highly recommended by several acquaintances. I am definitely not a big fan of the MMO lite stuff that's popular these days (WoW, EQ2, etc)
But good grief - I've been playing for 6 hours, and the VAST majority of that time has been spent web-browsing while my autopilot takes me halfway across the universe to get to and from agents.
The game thus far is hideously, horribly, agonizingly boring. I keep hoping the next mission will actually get exciting, but it just seems to get worse and worse.
I can't jump into PVP, as I would get eaten alive due to total lack of gear. So I just keep slogging around getting more and more bored.
My question for those of you who have stuck it out is....why? And when does this game stop being quite literally PAINFUL to play?

When you realise missions are a mean to an end - they let you generate ISK to do stuff that actually effects the world (trade, mine, fight).

Yup, imo even mining si better then missions tbh. So utterly boring and devoid of challenge, yut still requiring a medium level of attention. At least mining doesn't pretend to be anything else then an activity you do on the side while having a laugh through other means.

The instant you realize that you don't "need" expensive gear to do PvP.
Fun in EVE is doing what you think is fun, not grinding so that you can get gear/skills you think you "need" to do such a thing.

Turn off the autopilot and fly manually, or set the autopilot to use the least secure route, that should get you a pulse increase.

You need just basic gear to be successful in pvp, but you do need some friends. Find a good corp that accepts newbies, it will definently help you learn and evolve in this game. This game is NOT about doing stupid missions. Its about feeling the rush and fun of pvp combat in groups and alone. At least for me. Other people love missions, or mining, and thats fine. You dont sound like one, so get into a pvp oriented corp.
Check the Recruitment channel and read about the goals of different corps there. See if they seem to fit you.

Just set a goal and work towards it, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and doa bit of something you dont like to generate isk. Luckily enough theres a lot of different methods of earning money in this game. Get some decent gear, train towards what you want and get involved in corporations and pvp, you'll never look back. This game has more then a 6 hr learning curve, stay with it for the rest of the trial period and your hard work will pay off. _______________

Just to give a different responce then most..
Honestly, even if you had the best gear possible, you'd still get eaten alive. Why? Becuase you don't know anything about the game yet.
Seriously dude.. If you have only been playing for 6 hrs, and you are bored, then you need to move on.
The tutorial is there for a reason. The long warps are there to get you used to moveing around. They are to get you used to the warp warping/jumping goes. They're there to give you an idea of the scale of the game.
Once you've finished your tutorial misisons, you'll spend a few weeks learning the game. Use that time in between jumps on the forums learning about the ships, the NPC's, the DEV's, about tactics, about the modules/weapons/ships, about game mechanics.
For the first week or two it WILL be boreing, as you'll be learning how to fight, how to trade, how to mine and so on. You'll be learning how things work in the game basically.
Then you'll want to start earning isk.
Missions, mining, tradeing, for most(not all) of us is a means to an end. We want to make enough isk to finance our PvP habits.
True, with knowledge and skill you can be PvPing in hours/days, but if you are truely new to the game, it'll take you a few weeks to get comfortable with things, and to learn the ins and outs of the game.
Give it time dude.

Hello Persnickety (and other EvE-ers),
When they say in the player's guide that Eve is like a playground rather than a theme-park (think WoW) they really are right and sometimes it's easy to get lost in the scope of the game.
This game really is about taking the initiative to entertain oneself. I know that sounds trite but it's not meant that way, I think it's easy for us all to forget how to 'create our own games' because we're so used to being passively entertained (even in video games and MMOs especially).
First off: The community here is -great-. Your going to meet all sorts. Even if you get WTFPWNED by a bunch of scum-sucking pirates(Yargh!) feel free to open convo with them afterward and talk about the fight, how could you have done better or where they got started. Allot of them are quite happy to talk about their own experiences and it helps you develop contacts and possibly join their corp (or other corps)!
With that in mind, join a whole slew of corporations when you start off, it really helps you get a feeling for how the different communities view and play eve. You'd be surprised at how vastly different each group can be!
Also, if your bored with Eve, I recommend getting out of High Sector space, which can be a bore after a while. Instead, invest the 10mil or so ISK in an insta set of a low sec region you would like to explore more (VERY well spent money) and run from pirates, go low sec ratting, do deadspace missions or anything else you can think of.
Once you find a corporation to join you can do all sorts of things. The game -really- opens up when you all start thinking of different ways to play the game. My own corporation, for example has started farming itself out as a Merc corp for other alliances and corporations. This lets you earn some isk (nominal usually) but also join in the epic battles that are being waged.
If your young, advertise yourself as a freelance scout. Since your not apart of an alliance or a corp that might be at war, their opponents will likely not recognize you as an 'agent' for the other side. THis lets you go ahead of a fleet to scope out systems, do reconaisance work and all sorts of other stuff you wouldn't likely see if you were playing EvE on your own.
Anyhow, if you (or others) have more questions regarding playing in eve, feel free to convo me in game. I'd be more than happy to extend some suggestions (or maybe even join up).

Do you know how much I love these long warps. Gives me time to cool off when I just barely made it out in fight. Hell, I don't even fly battleships yet and I've been PvPing for a while now.... hook up with a corp. Pick some fights in low sec with a few baddies. I honestly didn't start loving the game until I got ganked while running a mission.

for added fun do like me: after the boring courier missions i joined goonswarm and travelled right down to 0.0, and it`s ******* great here. you make a lot more money, one mission will get you cash for a fully outfitted frigate. A constant stream of pvp related stuff to do like ganksquads or defence ops. i made my first 30 million by jewing it up in the market here, buying stuff in empire and selling it for 4 times its worth in 0.0 markets.

It all eventually gets boring. Buying stuff, hauling stuff, mining stuff, shooting stuff. The game needs a storyline. I mean...one that's playable as oppose to a backdrop for people's amassing ISK, toys and kills.

There are plenty of storylines. Just check out the Alliance and COrporation Discussion forums. Its all player driven politics. Those who ask for a cookie cutter storyline are only doing so because thy fail to see how they can create/join their own storylines.
So EVE is actually BoB. Either pro-BoB or Anti-BoB.
