Why do ccp always put a specific time on their extended downtime and are never able to keep to the time they have suggested. Ok my field isn't IT and I'm sure things donÆt work out like clock work but why not put an approximation rather than an exact time. They could say æserver maintenance extended downtime from 13:00 for 3-5 hoursÆ something like that. Otherwise it feels like waiting for a train that is late with no apology. I have to put up with that everyday with my commute to work!

i still say they should over-estimate the needed time, so people will always be happy when its over early, rather than finished late again. its a common sales technique.
that said, last time i mentioned this i got locked for discussing the patch.....

Cus if they did that you would have people exactly like you coming on and complaining why they dont set an exact time. As far as i know todays was pretty much on time anyway who cares if its 1-2 hours late as long as its done thats all that matters and if you didnt set a skill thats at least a day long thats your own fault since you are advised of extended downtimes at least a week before they happen

If they would do it every day they would know how long it takes. And that's nothing IT specific. It is IT specific that it's allways the first try. Software is allways a prototype bacause it get's copied instead of manufactured in series.

It is my understanding Tranquility returned to service just a few minutes before the announced time of 1500 GMT. I've seen a number of past complaints about CCP being late with a return to service, but I think this is the first time I have seen such a post after the server was brought back early.

Edited by: Grismar on 05/07/2006 17:51:13 I completely agree with the original poster, except for the fact that today, for a change, CCP was right on time. Mind you, EVE is on GMT, not BST.
In general though, it does seem to be an ailment that afflicts IT in ways far worse than other fields. I'm in the business myself and I feel it has something to do with the nature of the work, or rather the product and projects.
IT folk deal with information problems and their job is, for a very important part, to break functionality down in parts, break those parts down in smaller parts, etc. The smallest parts are usually 'trivial' problems and when estimating the total time needed, the triviality of the component tasks results in gross underestimation of the total time needed, since the actual overhead rises exponentially with every layer of refinement, while we tend to estimate it in a linear fashion.
Overly complicated explanation over. Guess you had to be there ;).
Greetings, Grismar.

Would I be right in saying you are from the UK and are ignorant to the fact that 15:00 GMT = 16:00 BST (British time)? If so then lets hear your apology

Well, their times are approximations, that's normally the best you can do in the IT business. That's why they always advise you to put a long skill on training before downtime.
I mean, when you've got a few hundred thousand lines of code and a few dozen computers and databases that all have to be working in sync stuff can go wrong, and frequently does

I well remember the hardware upgrade when the new servers went online. IIRC, it was 3 hours before the scheduled finish.
Give them a break, you can't forsee every problem that will crop up and murphy's law has always been the bane of IT.

I am well aware of the difference with between GMT & BST my discourteous friend. What propted me to write the rant was I could not log on at the time ccp mentioned. However I thought it was CCP's fault...My impetous behaviour lead to me writing this post. Conversely it was down to my wirless network & not CCP on this occasion so I do apoligise to CCP. There I said sorry. Now will they say sorry for all the times they were late? |

If they were to do this, then there would be a lot of static about how much down time an MMO has to have for maintenance. People will always assume the worst, but any service with a regular outage should never be over estimated as it makes the overall service look bad.

there is many times when the standard downtime has been back up 15mins before hand but of course no one mentions that, i've often got stressed out when a patch has extended longer than normal but thats PC Programming for u, **** happens.
CCP could always do what Scotty used to in Original Star Trek, Multiply everything by 4 and state that, always worked for Kirk

good point, but just overestimating by 5-10% would normally be enough, without making much difference. would people mind if a downtime was 25 hours rather than 24 hours? nope. would they be pleased when it came back 30mins early? damn straight they would =P
