Is it dead?
Personally, I've never understood gate camping - its the lamest, most cowardly way to pirate, and also the least fun. If pirates are having a hard time gate camping and trapping passers-by, why don't they hunt differently? There is, afterall, more than one way to insert a herring into a shoe...(or perhaps not. Is that the right metaphor?)
Are pirates getting a rough deal? Do we even care? Do I care? I'm not sure. What do pirates think? Is this all being over-blown? Constructive opinions would be gratefully appreciated.
Also - what constitutes a pirate? Sometimes, just randomly bombing someone gets you the name "pirate"...Im confused now. Help?! -------------------------------------------- Dead

People allways complain. On EVE and other stuff. Why? Because everyone is lazy and want their surroundings to fit them.
Pirates want EVE to adapt to suit them. Traders want pirates outlawed to suit them. And on and on and on....
As I see it, the game is here. We all know what gamephysics bind us and are equal for all players. We know that bounderies are changed everyday as new tactics and items etc are used.
My answer is this - everyone should adapt. Not cry as soon as something does not fit their style of playing. //snaazex

For me a pirate will stop you on your way and ask for money, or cargo or your ship before you may continue. It may happen once in a while that some are just after shooting you, depends on someone's mood I guess.
Pirates adapt when the game changes, and with any new changes I hope we find a new way to pirate.
When pirating becomes impossible, I'll start to whine, when pirating gets harder I'll have to be more creative.

I don't want the game changed to suit my style.
I'll change my style to suit the game.
Although, the way things are going, the short* window we have to 'actually' pirate someone may get bigger (stopping insta-bookmarks, etc.) I'm almost positive this will be a good thing for both pirates and non-pirates alike (except for the few who did (and still do) exploit the insta bookmark system).
*we can give people no more than 25-30 seconds to complete payment, if they're lucky.
The way I see it:
The less time we have to successfully pirate someone, the greater the chance of us just killing them, and hoping they *had* a couple of decent loot items.
Of course, this will leave people wide open to griefing. But seeing as they already *are* wide open to griefing, I'm sure the change will be merely academic to these types.
What I'd really like to see is Setec's idea about a lethal/non-lethal switch. which would allow you to take somebody's ship to within shot of destruction, at which point we could make our demands. The PK's will simply leave this off. There is *no* downside to this idea that I can think of.
I just wish I could remember where he posted it. .

There is at least one new method of extorting money - implant blackmail. Basically a pirate can threaten to pod someone unless they pay up, if they pod them (before payment anyway) then they can't simply loot the vessel. Refusal to pay would end up with a loss of 50M+. If the vessel is scrambled then they can also blackmail based on that. Add the two together and I think I'd probably be willing to pay 10M to stay alive and keep my ship intact, which is considerably more than I would have paid before (to date I've never paid up, always been podded by pirates - despite 2 attempts at surrender :-) ).
I know that some pirates have already started doing this, I'm suprised it isn't more widely known.

Pirating is dead, has been for a while. CCP bent over backwards for the carebears. There is little profit in pirating, so what's the point? You might as well trade robotics or something or mine bistot/crokite.
Superhighways, uber concord, uber sentry guns everywhere.. there's just no point to pirating anymore.
Congratulations folks, you made the game more boring. ------

It's feasible. Viable ? I wonder... specially for a BS-level pilot used to earn around 1 million per hour.
The problem, as I see it, is that the number of options making piracy a financially viable profession is being reduced patch after patch.
If you take the fun factor in consideration, it's a whole different story, though

NEWSFLASH " There are only miners and ocasional npc hunter in belts!!! " And if they have any sense they will warp out as soon as they see a pirate.Nobody transportin anything of value goes to belts.NOBODY! You ever seen a robotics trader in roid field? That means the pirates will not be able to make a living. That means they will get bored. That means they will quit the game (many have allready). That means you will be left with a boring mining/trading simulator where you can spend 99% of your time AFK on autopilot because there is NO RISK to fly anywhere. Is this what you want?

"NEWSFLASH " There are only miners and ocasional npc hunter in belts!!! ""
... So, you are saying neither miners nor npc hunters have any sort of money from all that mining and hunting, that can be extorted? And they don't actually install any of their precious Miner 2's and good hunting equipment which can be looted from their ships and sold?
Pretty odd if you ask me....

lacking the intelect to catch a trader in a bestower? You can't stand it when players warp out when you warp in to kill them? You want the game to be pure PvP only? Why not pick up a fps game instead of whining about an RPG that is correcting the bugs that had been exploited that allowed your type to do as you wanted, without repercussions.

Um, isn't cloaking coming?
Cloak your ship. Sneak up on them. uncloak. Even if there's a few second delay before you're allowed to target or activate modules, you've got a good chance of scrambling a few now no matter what your location, and trying true piracy once again.

When i first started to read this thread, i immidiately started to think as Setec has. Then i was referred to his post, and i have to support the idea 100%. In the Star Wars universe, the way to disable/cripple a ship would be the Ion Cannons. If you got disabeled you either had to call in a support ship to power you back up, or simply eject.
In EvE, the challenge would be how to get the ship going again. Either the pilot could eject, get to a station and buy some sort of 'power injector emergency kit' or something. Or a friendly ship could use a module to power it back up. Or even a stationary force field could be deployed onto the battle field to make corp ships immune to being disabeled.
The idea is splendid, and there are several ways to do it. Surely would spice up piracy a bit. Heck, if you're good at it, you don't really have to drop too low either, sec rating wise

Ditch a container on the other sides of the warpgate of the system you're camping, with text saying '500k or die! - Danton Marcellus' for example. People will then have an option to pick a route around that system or send you the money and be allowed to pass before entering the system, where they'll be killed on sight if failing to pay up.
Bonus being some might pay you even though you're not there camping or just being afk at the station but the container's still left.

Edited by: Scrapyard Jack on 01/10/2003 18:37:05 ehehehe!
Scrapyard Jack is all for piracy, and recognises that the "darker element" needs to be present in EVE.
That said; there's a difference between piracy and PKing.
Pirates are people who prey on other people for the purpose of making ISK. By this description; pirates should NEVER pod people. (Where's the profit in taking a massive security hit in exchange for a mere corpse?)
Trap 'em, Catch 'em, demand ISK/cargo, maroon 'em if they're not forthcoming and pick over the remnants.. that's a pirate.
It would not be difficult for a pirate to operate in this manner and use agents to prevent his Security Status from sinking too low.
Problem is; 95% of the "pirates" out there in EVE seem to be of the opinion that piracy is blowing up every ship you see and killing the occupant.
There's a reason why this kind of "piracy" is highly dangerous and not profitable:
"You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors orf!"
ehehehe!

How about this scenario Jack?

Victim ; " OMG , 50 mil worth of implants in my head! I lose them if they pod me! I better pay! "

Yup, that's a pirate.
However, in 95% of cases, the pirate would say:
".."
Start shooting, destroy the ship, destroy the pod, pick up a couple of items from the remaining can.. (worth a few million ISK, if lucky) then say:
"fckin n00b"
And come to the boards to whine about how piracy is not profitable.

You have a timer before you can lock on or do anything when dropping out of warp. So anybody with half a brain has ample time to warp out the second he sees hostiles enter his belt or whatever.
This is why beltraiding isn't really done that much.

Edited by: iconoclast on 01/10/2003 21:13:35 piracy is a LABEL. is different things depending on your perspective. to the miner in teh roids, when you warp in to kill and take stuff. well, you are a pirate. but hey, to the folks warping in, maybe they see it as their corp/alliance competing with the miners corp/alliance. to claim "not fair" when someone competes successfully agains you... errr
this thread is "deja dit" to me everytime i read it now, and i only been playing 3 months.
its just plain stupid what happened. CCP built a game designed for people to form corps and alliances and battle / compete with each other for limited resources. compete tooth and nail and vie for domination of areas of space that are purposefully created to create chokeholds that corps/alliances can blockade. the vets got good at that campig thing and started winning. a lot. new players and corps / alliances that didn't learn how to fight and compete started whining cause all these vets were handing them the can of woopass regularlly at these chokeholds which CCP MEANT to put in the game.
its just like all the other damage control I've seen CCP do since i started. silly and making it worse. the quitters are in the wrong. let them go, or better yet do something to help them get better. CCP sponsered training classes on CHAOS, maybe more CCP people in these forums who are willing to explain how the game was designed to work to the frustrated posters. i dunno use your heads, there is better ways than hobbling those vets who are playing teh game like it was meant to be played everytime they find a new way around the last shackel you slapped on them. the game was designed from the ground up for victory by conquest!?! people who cry pirate all the time are just mad about being food of the moment...
bottomline seems 2 me -
if you are a loner there are two kinds of people in EVE. you, and not u.
if you are in a corp there are two kinds of people in EVE. your corp, and not your corp.
if you are in an alliance there are many, many, many more interesting factors - but still, your alliance should be what matters most to you.
and todays friends are tomorrows enemies / "pirates". have fun, learn, plot, be noble, betray, whatever gets you off. no matter what you do someone is going to be a freakout / crybaby about it often if you are an ace.
and school the new kids...
