Yeah, Hurt is good. Never woulda thought anyone could redo a NIN song and do it justice, but Cash was the guy to do it. American Recordings IV by Johnny is full of depressing songs, that guy's voice can make anyone look for some Prozak. Speaking of, Pretty Hate Machine by NIN full of stuff that could make this list, great album. Someone above mentioned Turn the Page by Metallica, can't stand that song, think the original by Seger much better. But One by Metallica certainly could go on this list too.

Too many. Where to even start?
REM - Everybody Hurts Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (ya, I know everyone likes the Sting version, but ... if you saw the campaign of cancer-research ads with this track, you'd have it on here too.) Celine Dion - Fly Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn Elton John - All Quiet on the Western Front Judy Collins - Send in the Clowns Annie Lennox - No More I Love You's Mike & the Mechanics - The Living Years Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (yeah, so, I'm old.) Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World (now figure THAT one out if you can.) ________________________________________________

It's an old Hungarian ballad - and yes, it is depressing. But it hasn't been banned as such. Cats Laughing did a particularly good version of it, and I think Sinead O'Connor covered it as well.
As for mine:
REM - Everybody Hurts (the only REM I really like) Counting Crows - Long December (Reminds me of my time in California) Beatles - Golden Slumbers (Reminds me of a girl I know who died very young) Olivia Newton-John - I Honestly Love You (I understand the unrequited love that song is about).

There's several sad songs I like, some of which have been already mentioned, REM - Everybody Hurts and Johnny Cash's version of Hurt (especially with the video) amongst others.
Here's another two to add to the mix, the Dubliners' versions of "The Fields of Athenry" and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". (Not heard any other versions)

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend. We've known each other since we're nine or ten. Together we climbed hills or trees. Learned of love and ABC's, skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Pretty girls are everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me, I was the black sheep of the family. You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much wine and too much song, wonder how I get along. Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Little children everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song, like the seasons, all have gone. Goodbye, Michelle, my little one. You gave me love and helped me find the sun. And every time that I was down you would always come around and get my feet back on the ground. Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die when all the bird are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. With the flowers ev'rywhere. I whish that we could both be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach were just starfishs on the beach

Richard Marx Lyrics Right Here Waiting Lyrics
Oceans apart day after day And I slowly go insane I hear your voice on the line But it doesn't stop the pain
If I see you next to never How can we say forever
Wherever you go Whatever you do I will be right here waiting for you Whatever it takes Or how my heart breaks I will be right here waiting for you
I took for granted, all the times That I though would last somehow I hear the laughter, I taste the tears But I can't get near you now
Oh, can't you see it baby You've got me goin' CrAzY
Wherever you go Whatever you do I will be right here waiting for you Whatever it takes Or how my heart breaks I will be right here waiting for you
I wonder how we can survive This romance But in the end if I'm with you I'll take the chance
Oh, can't you see it baby You've got me goin' crazy
Wherever you go Whatever you do I will be right here waiting for you Whatever it takes Or how my heart breaks I will be right here waiting for you ... ---------------- RecruitMe@NOINT!

Nick Cave "Easy Money"
It's difficult. It's very tough. I said to the man who'd been sleeping rough To sit within a fragrant breeze All among the nodding trees That hang heavy with the stuff
He threw his arms around my neck He brushed the tear from my cheek And held my soft white hand He was an understanding man He did not even barely hardly speak
Easy money Rain it down on the wife and the kids Rain it down on the house where we live Rain until you got nothing left to give And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me
All the things for which my heart yearns Gives joy in diminishing returns He kissed me on the mouth His hands they headed south And my cheek it burned
Money, man, it is a ***** The poor, they spoil it for the rich With my face pressed in the clover I wondered when this would be over And at home we are all so guilty-sad
Easy money Pour it down the open drain Pour it all through my veins Pour it down, yeah, let it rain And pour that ever-loving stuff down on me
Now, I'm sitting pretty down on the bank Life shuffles past at a low interest rate In the money-coloured meadows And all the interesting shadows They leap up, then dissipate
Easy money Easy money Easy money Rain it down on the wife and the kids Rain it down on the house where we live Rain it down until you got nothing left to give And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me

Smashing Pumpkins - Blank Page
Blank page is all the rage Never meant to say anything In bed I was half dead Tired of dreaming of rest Got dressed drove the state line Looking for you at the five and dime Stop sign told me stay at home Told me you were not alone Balnk page was all the rage Never meant to hurt anyone In bed I was half dead Tired of dreaming of rest You havent changed Youre still the same May you rise as you fall You were easy you are forgotten You are the ways of my mistakes I catch the rainfall Through the leaking roof That you had left behind You remind me Of that leak in my soul The rain falls My friends call Leaking rain on the phone
Take a day palnt some trees May they shade you from me May your children play beneath
Blank page was all the rage Never meant to say anything In bed I was half dead Tired of dreaming of rest Got dressed drove the state line Looking for you at the five and dime But there I was picking pieces up You are a ghost Of my indecision No more little girl

dead of winter lyrics by eels
standing in the dark outside the house breathing in the cold and sterile air and I was wondering how it must feel to see that little light and watch it as it disapeers and fades into, and fades into the night
so I guess you're going pretty soon radiation, sore throat, got your tongue magic markers tattoo you and show them where to aim and strangers break their promises you won't feel any, you won't feel any pain
and the streets are jammed with cars rocking their horns to race to the wire of the unfinished line
thought that I'd forget all about the past but it doesn't let me run too fast and I just wanna stand out here and know that this is true and this is real and I will not fade into, fade into the night
standing here in the dark

Got to agree whit the later one. Cash was the better one. It's to industrial the trent one. But thats just me. It's both pretty good songs. And so damn depressive.
Originally by: Anfelina Adante My guitar gently weeps. Beetles.
Actually. It's George Harrison's, it was used in one of the beatles albums quite early though. But you should really see this one as Georges. Besides, everyone seem to think ringo and george couldn't write good songs. This is an excelent example for proving otherwise.
I really wanted to list the two above. But I saw them allready posted. So I didn't bother. I tend to listen to these kind of songs. There are a few more that I really like and are kinda down. But you know. I can't stand listening to them for to long or I'll just get so damn depressive. But these songs have helped me trough a lot of hard times. Oh yeah. There are a few linkin park songs to. But on em I generally just listen to the entire album. Oh and jewel - foolish games. Christ it never ends. Lenny Kravits - Again..
ok ok ok.. I'm going now.

Hurt, the version by Johnny Cash. Dont like the original atall, frankly. One of the best songs i've ever heard.
Besides that:
Bittersweet Symphony, by The Verve. Winds of change, by The Scorpions. My Hometown, by Bruce Springsteen. Time Passages, by Al Stewart.
None come close to the depressiveness of Hurt, but they all have their memories for me. These aren't depressive, merely make me nostalgic.

Decades (1980)
Here are the young men, the weight on their shoulders, Here are the young men, well where have they been? We knocked on the doors of Hell's darker chamber, Pushed to the limit, we dragged ourselves in, Watched from the wings as the scenes were replaying, We saw ourselves now as we never had seen. Portrayal of the trauma and degeneration, The sorrows we suffered and never were free.
Where have they been? Where have they been? Where have they been? Where have they been?
Weary inside, now our heart's lost forever, Can't replace the fear, or the thrill of the chase, Each ritual showed up the door for our wanderings, Open then shut, then slammed in our face.
Where have they been? Where have they been? Where have they been? Where have they been?

A few of the songs from Moby, mainly from the "Play" album: -Porcelain -Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad -Natural Blues -My Weakness Plus more but those are the main ones.. I also enjoy Jose Gonzalez, mainly the two songs: -Heartbeats -Hints Cold play is another band that does very sad, but soothing music, I could probably name even more songs so ill just stick with saying Cold Play in general..
Also: Jack Johnson - Do You Remember REM - Everybody Hurts Sometime American Beauty - Plastic Bag Theme Metalica - Nothing Else Matters (The S&M Version)
Lastly and probably more strangely, I have both "Rush Hour" collections (Which are kind of dance music), and I find a couple songs from them tend to be very sad that I cling to, I dont know all artist's but the names of the songs are: -Love Story - Layo & Bushwacka -Loneliness -Touch Me
