Looking at the Mining Ships and Exhumers, they list high slots but then for turret & launcher hardpoints they're both 0 (zero).
So I'm guessing by those zero's that "mining ships" should actually be called "limited mining ships" as they can't actually mount a mining laser, just ice harvesters or strip miners. Seems kinda silly to me that you can't use a mining ship for asteroid mining.
So am I wrong or right about mining lasers on mining ships?

Why would you even want to mount a mining laser on a ship that uses the far better strip miner? And yes you can use them on ice or asteriods when fitted with the right strip miners.

I guess you haven't paid attention to the efficency and cycle time of the strip miners.
Also you clearly haven't taken into account the ship bonus for the Hulk which has about 30% more ore intake than an Apoc or Dominix mining battleship. --------------

You can mine in any ship, but if your serious about a profession you get a "specialized" ship for your chosen carrer. A mining barge IS a specialized ship so you can only use the best equipment on it e.g a strip miner. The reason it has no turrent points for a laser is because a strip miner is a module not a turrret of sorts.
Every piece of mining equipment under the "Mining Lasers" section is designed to be used in belts, weather its normal roids or ice, each piece of equipment is designed specifically for belt use, its which belt, and what roids you mine that make a difference ;)
The only piece of equipment that is not used in a belt is a Moon Mining array (the name gives it away lol) as it requires a POS to be able to supply the power and CPU which a ship cannot provide (not yet anyway, hears hoping for the capital mining ship!!).
Low end barges dont mine as much as a a Battleship miner, but once you get to medium/large barges you will notice the difference. You'll wonder how you ever managed with out a strip miner ;)

short answer: strip miners dont mine anything different than normal miners (asteroid mining), they just do it way better.
*doh, I broke my edited sig :/* *cries* this signature was lacking pink, I'll provide it for you. There. Looks better doesn't it? -Eris Fixed it for you. Oh, btw, yarr! ~kieron Didn't I tell you? Strip miners have a cycle time of 180 seconds versus 60 seconds for a bs miner II.
This means you don't have to be at the keys every 60 seconds to drop off ore and/ore gimp your BS with cargo expanders... |
