Your question is far to general to really answer, but i will try my best. First of all you should try the highsec ratting (being 0.5 and higher) just warp to the belts in your favourite system and check if there are npc pirates present and kill them as you please. You should not really have problems with a destroyer or a well fitted frig there. Then depending on your success you might want to try the low sec variant wich gives you both better loot and higher bounties on the npc pirates. The only problem will be that other players can shoot you in lowsec so be careful. Then after you are comfortable with lowsec you can do ratting in 0.0 and will probably get filthy rich by doing it. You do not even need to be in an alliance to try out 0.0 ratting, but i suggest learning how to survive in 0.0 and the proper use of the map and scanner with a cheap ship. For highsec ratting: frigate and destroyer For lowsec ratting: frigate -> destroyer -> cruiser -> battlecruiser depending on the security of the system and the rats there. For 0.0 ratting: Assault frigate (with good skills), Battlecruiser (with good skills) and battleship (with "ok" fitting skills).

I can rat down to a 0.1 in nothing but a well fitted Punisher. Though I'll grant you, it's hard work. at the moment I can rat easy with the same set up into 0.3
In the lower sec systems when hunting in a Frigate, your main worry is the higher end npc frigs and destroyer types. I use a close in, whites of their eye's fighting style. The ironic part is, the big paying (for me) npc cruiser type rats are the easiest to kill as once I'm under 8k from them they can't hit me for squat. As to what ship type you use is as much down to personal prefererance, though a Good BC set up should make hunting down to 0.1 easy. The main thing to do is make sure your ship is 'tuned' to the local rats you are hunting. I mainly hunt Blood Raiders and Sansha, so I always tank for EM/Thermal damage, and use weapons that do EM/Thermal damage, the same set up against Angels or Gurista would not be nearly so effective. Also some rat types have been taught to use smart bombs, so again my close in approach against those would be suicide.
So I guess, I've just gone a long way around the houses to say. "Know thy enemy"
But the biggest problem you will have hunting in low sec is from player rats, so they are what you need to take the most precautions against them.
Make sure that you hunt in a quiet system, have safe spots set up, and keep your local chat window open, then get straight to your safe spot as soon as somebody you don't know jumps in system

I certainly don't wish to be rude, but maybe it will help you out. In eve you can expect to be expected to make sure you get your informations yourself and make sure you are informed. Posting questions on this forum is a nice way to do it and the ratting question is relativly uncommon, but the scanner one is not. I would highly suggest you make good use of the forum search function and use the forums for it. It will help you out WAY more then anything i could post=).
If you don't find anything eve mail me and i will paste you a tutorial in an eve mail. ----------------------------------------

Edited by: Tradari on 08/07/2006 19:50:00 just to add to some of the information
Rats in high level space dont always carry poor loot. only the other day i was mining in a 0.5 sec area when up poped a spawn of 5. Now as per the norm i fired out the drones for defence while checking the bountys on the rats. (Hint the higher the bounty the harder the target) anyway one of them was worth 85K isk now for a 0.5 system i thought strange so poped back the drones and docked changed to a frig and came back and poped em. well to my amazment and JOY!! i picked up a faction frig blueprint. To be honest i think my corp m8s in teamspeak can still remeber me screaming it down the mic with OMG etc etc. so the moral here is dont always expect bad loot from high sec ratting but the bountys tend to give away the sort of loot that you might pickup.
Yours Tradari

Hrm, so once you get on your feet financially and skillwise, patrolling asteroid belts is much more profitable than combat missions?

It is more that you can do it faster more profitable and it can be like a lottery that can yield you crazy riches. If you really have insanely high skills then i believe solo grinding level 4 missions (this takes a good while to get down and serious skills) can yield you more and there are also many many other things in eve that can make you rich (or poor). The good part about ratting in 0.0 or lowsec is that it can really make you rich with relativly low skills. I for one would suggest any starting player to train assault frigs up relativly quick, because you can definitly solo pretty much any 0.0 belt spawn in an AF and it is easier to train for it then for the proper use of a battleship. ----------------------------------------

If you can find an entrypoint which isn't camped, and you're in a frig/shuttle, you should be fine.
Just remember to bring instas ;o ..
Pure Blind is not offcially claimed, so the alliances in the area don't do NBSI, but there's a lot of activity (ie. ppl wanting to shoot stuff). CVA has an outpost in Providense, and they let neutrals live there. That you're "allowed" to be there doesn't mean it's safe tho

if its Not Blue Shoot It. Blue being the colour those with high standings to your alliance show as in the overview.

For decent NPCing/isk making you need.....
1. a 0.0 system (pref off the route the auto pilot takes) 2. a raven (easiest ship to fight NPCs with the lowest skills) 3. bookmarks 4. scout (either a friend or running a second trial account)
Just make sure local is always open and you warp to a safe spot the second anyone enters.
follow these and you have 99% chance of not getting killed

Anyone know where I can find a listing of those EM/thermal/kinetic info on npc rats...
I saw this player fly around last night with an overview of what rat has was defence and what weakness, but being a newbie, didn't realise the value of copy pasting that into my notes...
A spreadsheet of sorts would work too, heard people have those... Many thanks in advance
