The claiming of bounties here based on the volatile market price of an item being destroyed is certainly different. It will be interesting to see CCP's words. So actually this situation seems different from the exploit that your "giants" took advantage of.

Of course this was an exploit. I mean look at it. It clearly was a bug, which rather than report, your mate chose to utilise to make profit. He deserves what he got and some. At least the faction warfare exploit took time and effort to swing the entire market, and at the time was at most questionable. Your little friend just abused an oversight in the market pricing and thought he'd be able to get away with it, even though people have been banned for exploiting bounty mechanics before. Epic fail.

this involved taking ideas already established by the faction five and reusing them to exploit a different part of the game protected by the same pricegating mechanism

We have yet to hear from CCP regarding this. But I'd love to see a clear explanation of why this was an exploit. Clearly there was some issue with the math involved to determine the value of an item that was destroyed.
