Close-in weapons systems (point defense turrets), for missile defense (and drone killing). These very short ranged, fast tracking automatically operated turrets would fire at any target, hostile or friendly, within their interception range when activated.
There are a lot of ships that don't have a single missile hardpoint, which leaves them very vulnerable to missile attacks since the only way to counter missiles is defender missiles.
This type of weapon is used in many modern warships, I don't see why couldn't it work in eve.

Edited by: Lord Derik on 08/07/2006 19:50:27 If you notice, none of the ships have secondary (anit-lighter craft) weapon systems with out gimping your mains. It might unbalance things by allowing large ships to take out small ones without needing escorts. A side effect to the way combat works in the game, rock paper scissors instead of trajectory similation. Trajectory similation would have to track all projectiles to see what they hit. A huge cpu load and friendly fire could result. |

I think you did not fully understand what I was saying. I was talking about defensive system against enemy missiles that those ships that don't have missile slots totally lack. And gave an example of such system in modern warfare.

CWIS can target missiles and aircraft. The medium drones have nearly as many HPs, shield and armor, as frigates, just no structure. As the article states, the gattling version is being phased out due to the reasons specified and being replaced by the missile version, which you could consider to be Eve's Defender Missiles. |

If you let Defenders hit drones, then I'm all about a turret-hardpoint-mounted equivalent.

Not exactly the same thing, but defenders are lanched from normal rocket or missile launchers, which allows the player to load a differend type of missiles if there is no missile threat nearby. This makes them a nice weapon to use against small, fast targets, such as drones or frigates.
