Even though gatecamping is a poor amd sad way of pirating, it's completely legal. Also, with a little preperation, it can easily be avoided.

I think there are more 'pirates' ( read griefers/gankers ) on these forums than there are non 'pirates' . They all pat themselves on the back, and even "wish me luck" when one suggests he is going of on his alt to suicide gank poeple in empire .
They do it because it makes their d**ks hard, you wont find any sympathy here. It's all your own fault you know. You had plenty of options like ( yeh right ), subscribe with another account and run one as a scout. Whilst logging in for that 1 hour find 3 'buddies' to help ya. Ohhh yeh the map, yeh never mind that there is no way round that system or the mission is in the system.
Or why didnt you spend millions on Instas for the region whilst not being scammed. or perhaps you should have made your own instas in the systems you get ganked in, cause im sure these most charming of fellows would allow you unhindered access to the system to make BMs.
If you aint a pirate tough.

Jeez.
Let me state first: I'm mostly a carebear. I've had exactly ONE PvP experience that led to someone losing a ship (not me, thankfully). I've started getting my feet wet in lowsec just this week, _dodging_ gatecamps fairly regularly.
Guess what? I'm with the pirates on this one. You didn't THINK before you took that mission in lowsec. Can you afford to lose your ship, the mods and ammo you put in it, and the implants in your head? No? Well, you _can_ refuse that mission and get another. Or move to an agent who won't send you to lowsec.
Doesn't matter why. They do it, you know they do it, if you don't want it to happen to you, try thinking. Use the map, ask around, or better yet, DON'T GO THERE!

Originally by: Heikki It's also more profitable than generic belt piracy. People in belts don't tend to carry implants and officer mods that often.
Because we all know that rats make lots of money by looting the implants from the people they pod.
And the people who somehow manage to say "Because we want to see your posts on here" and "stop posting here" at the same time, they are so uber cool.

I would only add for the sake of decency that anyone putting gatecamping in the PvP category is doing roughly the same thing as someone placing one-sided nuclear exchange in the category of a "boxing match".
Gatecamps are for the most part comprised of relativelly unskilled people who can't shoot worth a damn solo and thus have to team up with seven other pilots to be able to "nuke" rookie ships.
Otherwise they'd probably lose their shiny battleships to a civilian gatling cannon. :p
To all others - Ganking Of Noobs is a sad but inevitable happening in any MMO. Sooner or later you get players who have spent too much time in game already, have no worthwhile activities outside of it, and therefore the only compensation they have for all that wasted time is to try and make someone fly off their chair. It's sad, but it's true. The best you can do is learn to avoid them. And remember - it's just a game. ;)

Too funny.
I ran across a gate camp in a .4 system this weekend. And proceeded to run my inty thru it from both directions just to prove to the nubs in the next system is was easily done.
Then I watched them all try it in battleships or Battlecruisers. It was kinda like watching lemmings run off a cliff.
The next day I used the same group of pirates to pod jump myself and my alt (in shuttles of course). It was a very convientent service and I think I'll wire a few million creds their way for the help.
My point of course is that if people truly used the tools that are in game, they can avoid pretty much any low sec gate camp.
And who said there is no way around? What a rediculas statement. Unless the system you need to go to is a deadend on the other side of a camp. There is no such thing as "no way around" in eve. Or at least, it's incredibly rare.
Also. Why ask why? Isn't the answer painfully obvious? They can, so they do. People are like that. And this game attracts its unfair portion of greifer minded people.

Funny, nobody seems to try to stop us unless they have more ships than us, despite the fact that we're tanking sentries. Last time UK tried to break us up they brought carriers. Carriers seem like overkill against unskilled people who have to team up to nuke rookie ships.
Sadly, nobody even tried to break up our camp this weekend, which ran for roughly 24 hours with about a 4 hour break in the middle.
I guess all the alliances have converted to solo PvP, and can't be bothered to get a group together anymore.

Truth? Gate campers are regarded for the most part as a "waste of time". In case gate campers start inhibiting the traffic in an important system, then yes, they get wiped with an overkill. Makes sense. What, you expect someone to fly up to you and ask for an honorable duel? Har har har. :)
Seriously, the only thing gatecampers are able to catch are noobs who do not check the maps, careless haulers who do not check the map and people who do not check the map. I got caught by a gatecamp only once. I didn't check the map.
I honestly doubt any alliance was ever truly impeded by the "efforts" of a gatecamp. As you said, you get carriers sic'ed on you. It's not a recognition of your "skill" - it's simply the fastest way to clear up a gang of hobos clogging up the proverbial street. :p
