Edited by: Galdar TheMinotaur on 09/07/2006 09:01:05 Well recently ive heard tons of bad storys about peoples accounts getting taken over. People who dont hand out there account info and they take breaks from eve a couple months to come back and find there account pass changed then after a month of working with slow customer service they get it back, However i had a friend who got his account back LMFAo but his main character had been transfered off and they told him that they wouldnt give it back to him.
My question is how can i protect my accounts from this? i will never give up my characters and but what if i get my account hacked i dont want to end up with horrible customer service and get the shaft.
What can i do besides common sense firewalls and anti virus to prove that someone stole a character of mine if one day i take a month break and come back and find my stuff gone?
I love eve so much but im so scared of having to deal with its gm's or whoever handles that.
Any advice anyone has taken to make sure you dont loose your character in the future you can reccomend?

1. Make sure you dont have an easy to quess password 2. Be wary of third party software for eve as it might contain keyloggers and other stuff to have your login info send to the one that made the program 3. Do not give out any account info to people 4. Change password often even if you do not play for a while. You can do that from the site under my account

dont use 3rd party software dont visit oog websites (out of game) that arent cleared by CCP.
Dont give anyone youre password dont use youre ingame password on other websites (esp alliacne websites etc)
be smart oh and keep paying youre account so it doenst go inactive.

Never use your username/password for other sites than this. A lot of the accounts that get 'hacked', is because the owner has used the same username/pw on his corp forums or another fan site. These can be relatively easy to get access to, depending on the forums security etc etc.
Never store your username/pw on your PC, and it goes without saying that you should never give it to anyone. Many *****ed accounts are done so by people whom have been giving the info.
Always keep your antivirus/firewall up-to-date. Run anti-spyware/malware programs regularly.
NEVER download any third-party-programs, if you do that you're just begging to get a keylogger. (In which case you won't get anything reimbursed, since third-party-programs are against the EULA).
That's the most basic things that I can think of.

IMO, CCP should make it so you need your secret question answer to transfer accounts, and maybe some other stuff, like...DOB, full name, address. Just to stop it. ---------------------------

When some one's account information is obtained by someone else 99% of the time it is as a direct result of the owner's actions. As stated above, treat your information like gold and don't use any applications which are used for EVE that are not distributed by CCP.
As for the customer service decision to not give the character back, this was a good call. What proof is there the actual owner didn't sell the character then quit, later decided he wanted to return. Sounds very plausible to me.

Edited by: Galdar TheMinotaur on 09/07/2006 09:20:47 I wish ccp would implement some sort of a validation process to where there is a written statement verification of each character transfer or something, perhaps a IP logger so if they saw a random IP other then the paying account IP was logged in at there website on your account doing the transfer they could see a red light and and cancel the transfer or somthing.
Just some sort of prof using technology that would sort these things out instead of a situation that would be its the hackers word against yours and whoever they like more gets it.
I dont know msn messenger screen shot of confirmation of transfer or something hehe.
Edited in: no my friend had went to Iraq for the war came back and had that problem. And no he didnt leak any password info to friends or family etc. So had to be spyware or somthing in which case wouldnt be his fault.
Anyways i just feel deressed about eve cause now i feel like why go on to build a eve life when someone could just take my stuff if i cant afford eve for a month and i get no help in getting my char back. Just a mood killer to work so hard for somthing you might not have the next day.

Edited by: Galdar TheMinotaur on 09/07/2006 09:30:20 Also i Know for a fact that i will never trade a character or sell one or leave eve. Could i write a Contract on the forums now stating which characters i will never sell for isk on the trade channel so that in the future i can say look 4 months ago i said i wouldnt on the forums!! :D
How long do threads stay on the forums before being deleted?
Edited in: LOL unless they look on your very old paste and Edit and delete it if they had your info =/ so much for that idea.

Edited by: Jade Foxfire on 09/07/2006 09:42:55 There are alsways two sides of the story.
I know someone, who got his account stolen. I've played with this guy for many months and know his voice from teamspeak and his character. It was really theft.
I've heard of another guy, who SOLD his main account to a mate, don't know when it happened though, I mean if it was against the EULA or not at that time and I think he said he tried to get his account back with the help of CCP, but failed. Good that he failed. Something like this really sux. It's fraud.
One of my chars was bought via a forum auction for isk, too. I've got him for a year now and half of the skillpoints are from my time. The whole specialization for one race and the months I invested already for training towards capitals.
If someone came and wanted that char back now and CCP gave it to him after that time, I would be totally ****ed and consult a lawyer, I think.

yes jade but if they implement a security option now and only have the security options apply from the date they implement it then alot of people could save all the heart ache in the future.
What if one of your characters tonight was taken and your word against his and they wouldnt give you, your character back i mean thats what im scared of because no security options just word vs word.
As for my friend i dont care about his situation anymore hes screwed im worried about my general protection of my account .
btw hes not just a guy i new from teamspeak we grew up together.
It takes a month for someone to get a battleship and if i played for like 8 months then lost it all omg just cant think about how insane id go lol.

Also, don't believe people that say "I didn't do a thing", or "I didn't give my password" or "I don't use hacks" when something like this happens.

Btw. the highly visible account thefts over the last couple of weeks didn't come (only) from ebayed macromining programs, but also from free tools like training/char planners. The malware was installed by just visiting EVE related websites with not up-to-date Internet Explorers.
Yes, the stuff was installed just by browsing the sites without admin rights. No, I don't play with the comp I use for researching such stuff.
You could install EVE on a separate partition that's only used for playing EVE. Not for surfing, not for posting, not for testing stuff. That way you could even optimize your drivers without breaking other software that runs better with different drivers. --*=*=*--

You can download the XML manually and feed EVEmon with that file.
You can load the source code and check it, disabling or changing the parts that seem dangerous to you. Just make sure you get the original. --*=*=*--

E-ON magazine nr.4, page 14, asked that question to its creator Six Anari and the answer was that the code is freely available. So if you understand coding you can scan thru the code and then complile it yourself. Ofcource SA added, that others might use the code to include such bad features. Thats why its best to download the software from its official page evemon.evercrest.com
In general dont trust 3rd user software. And specially not they who promises you to double, tripple or quadtruple your ISK wallet... A post from a GM some weeks ago mentioned that particular program, which contained a keylogger.

It's fraud. Thats the whole point of needing a credit card to do the transaction - involving real life money, the transaction is involved with the sale of stolen goods, so you should be able to contact the police. E-mail CCP again. And again. and again.

I do, remember just a few months ago when everybody's passwords were changed because CCP's database got hacked? It does happen. I like to think that not everybody has done something wrong. --- --- --- ---

btw just a week after this another one of my Rl friends got his account hacked. Hes been playing 2yrs and keeps his login info to himself. The guy who hacked his account self destructed his pod a ton of time dropping his SP from 18mill to 3mill. And transfered a bill isk and all assets off his character. he petitioned and GM's worked prity fast and gave him back his SP but said they couldnt get back the isk or assets. And they wouldnt spawn random isk into his wallet.
So basically he lost everything. After seeing this i cant really blame people who buy isk.

Which implies they couldn't trace the ISK in order to return it. What they should have done in your opinion? Understanding, that reimbursing such cases would allow scammers to generate billions of free ISK through agreed 'hacking' cases. Assuming by default that your friend was partially responsible for the hacking (mishandling passwords, allowing someone to steal the credentials from his computers).

I fail to see the idea and connection here, sounds more like 'my friend's business went bankrupt, so I understand why he goes shoplifting'.
Especially when buying ISK (through GameTimeCards) is allowed and sactioned by CCP.
