PNG is a lossless compression format (like GIF), its the way to go for screenshots with large regions of a single color (like screenies from windows) or pictures you want to set as backgrounds.
JPG is a compression which reduces the size through loss of data. That means, if you want to set the picture as your background and it have to be relarged you will see the artefacts of the compression algorithm. Nowever, its the best to use for screenshots of games and pictures with many (slightly) different regions.
BMP is basically the same than a PNG, just not compressed and as such, it's the best way to make all those poor dialup connection users whine. Well, thats about all there is about the advantages of BMP then. ;-)
Oh, and Edit: Forgot to say, thats a nice background. :)

me likes! and just a tip... images like this should be kept for as long as possible, dunno if filecloud keeps them long or not but feel free to use eve-files.com for your future wallpapers, that's what it is there for.

Certainly looks very nice, except for one thing - the Ishtar itself is WAY oversharpened! Makes for nasty looking border areas on the ship, and in general looks "wrong". It almost seems like the Ishtar image is taken from a too low-resolution image, then enlarged and nbersharpened. Just use a big non-sharpened original, and it's nber
